God is Moving at FUMC
I love spring! As leaves return to the trees, flowers
begin to bloom, and grass turns green, life awakens all
around us. It's a great reminder of the power and importance
of Easter. I hope that all of you will make a special effort to
attend all the special services during Holy Week and the
Sunday morning Easter services.
We, the Garbs family, are preparing for our new
baby boy! We have scheduled to induce on April 9th unless
baby Ross has plans to come early. I want to thank everyone
for your prayers, support, and gifts during this pregnancy.
In the beginning, Charlee and I were concerned because we
had to start over with baby supplies and furniture. But all of
you have been so gracious and loving that baby Ross will be
taken care of for a long time. Thank you very much for
everything. Truly this is a loving caring church and
community. We are blessed!
The month of April is full of special Sunday worship
services. On April 7th, the youth will lead us in worship.
Leading worship is an important step in a young person's
faith journey. It builds confidence within the youth as well
as challenges them to consider the meaning of the worship
service. I hope all of you will be in attendance and support
our young men and women during Youth Sunday.

Continued from Pastor Garbs –
Sunday, April 14th will kick off
Mission Celebration week. Our
Risk-Taking Mission Team is
working hard putting together
this week. We will celebrate the
local and international mission
on Sunday and during the week
we encourage everyone to pray
for the lost and hurting in
Marshall and around the world.
On Saturday, April 20th, you all
are encouraged to participate in
some sort of local mission work.
We will have list of organized
activities for everyone to
participate and a lunch at the
Lion's Park for the church and
community. Then on Sunday
(April 21st) Frederick Jones, a
student from Wiley College, will
deliver the message. Frederick
has hosted many revivals and
preaches every chance he gets
the message of Jesus Christ. I
believe this to be an amazing
opportunity to have him
proclaim God's word to us and
encourage him to follow God's
calling.
God is good and is doing
amazing things at the church.
Glory be to God alone. I pray
that you will participate as God
hopes you will.
Christ is Risen! Christ is
Risen indeed!
We will be kicking off One Great Week of Caring with Mission Sunday on Apr. 14.
The week will conclude with our work day on Apr. 20 with mission activities in the
community, as well as a citywide picnic at Lions Park. We will also have a special speaker
on Sunday Apr. 21 in both services.
On Mission Sunday, local and foreign missionaries will be on hand to share stories
and insights about their work. The speakers for the day will be Jose Banales (Mexico City)
and Peru Greer (Mandated Ministries). They will both speak during the Traditional and the
Contemporary service. Steve Carlile (Mission Marshall), Steve Cosslett (Mexico City) and
Philip Manning (Kenya) will be sharing news of their missions during the Sunday school
hour following a light brunch.
MISSION SUNDAY APRIL 14
Fabric Donations Needed
As part of the One Great Day of
Caring, one of our mission
projects will be making baby
blankets for Asbury House.
Fabric donations are needed for
this mission project. We would
appreciate fabrics at least one
yard in length. Please contact
Donna Lane at (903) 935-5582
for more information, or contact
the church office. We could also
use help sewing blankets, sheets
and pillowcases.
Christ is Risen!

Risk Taking Mission opportunities abound
in our community. One of the areas we hope to
address is that of continuing interest and care for
families helped during the Christmas season
through the efforts of our Society of St. Stephen.
Can you volunteer for the Saturday, April
20th One Great Day of Caring? People who can
hammer, cut, paint, rake, move debris and work
using other similar skills are essential to this
project. Rather like the “Christmas in April” work
weekends of years past, RTM wants to develop
teams to do light repair jobs.
One such proposed project is for a family of
four. The single mother of three owns her home and
has a job, but she has little extra for construction
repair. A man broke into their home and held them
hostage. To rescue them, the police used tear gas
canisters thrown through the windows. Those
windows need replacing. Because the home is open
and not safe, they are currently living with relatives.
We can find other similar projects but need
volunteers!
Each Christmas season as volunteers visit
and shop for families, FUMC members step up in a
huge way. From year to year, we often help the
same families. Just imagine the difference we could
make by meeting and talking with them, by offering
the gift of time and friendship, by continuing the
care and interest we give at Christmas? This is what
mission work is about…reaching out the hand of
Christian fellowship and showing God’s love
through service.
To volunteer for the One Great Day of Caring,
please sign up by April 5. You can either turn in the
form that was inserted in the bulletin, or contact
Rebecca Searcy.

Troop 239 News
Last week at the Food Pantry, I watched as a grandmother and her granddaughter walked through
the aisle picking out groceries. It was obvious that they share a close relationship, one with love
and respect for each other. Though not a traditional nuclear family unit, they are a family
nonetheless. I'm glad that our efforts in working at the Food Pantry and supporting its mission
help such families stay together and survive. Our congregation is blessed with people who pray,
who donate food, who give money and who serve. Volunteering last week were Mike Lacy,
Kathy Nafe, Patsy Boersma, Gimmie Armstrong, Steve Flohr, Gin Lasworth, Martha Haney, Liza
Bacon, Margie Hendry and Helen Warwick. God is good!

GOD IS GOOD!
We held a Court of Honor Tuesday night and awarded 12 Rank
Advancements, 58 merit badges and 2 Eagle Palms. We were visited
by our District Executive and his wife who spoke to us about Friends
of Scouting. Also in attendance were our Charter Organization
Representative Harold Raines and his lovely wife Mrs. Betty. After
the awards were handed out, we had a nice fellowship with the
families and enjoyed some great food. The scouts even managed to
work on the Chess Merit Badge with some friendly games amongst
themselves and a few visitors.
We will be attending Summer Camp this year at G.W. Pirtle Scout
Reservation on Lake Murvaul.
Troop 239 would like to say welcome to Chandler Kelehan and his
family. Chandler has transferred to our Troop from another scout
unit. We are excited to have Chandler and look forward to helping
him complete his journey to the rank of Eagle.
We would also like to take the time to recognize 2 of our leaders who
were recently honored with some pretty special awards. Carmen
Flanagan, a committee member, was awarded the District Award of
Merit, which is the highest award a scouting district can bestow upon
a volunteer. It is much deserved as Mrs. Carmen is always willing to
volunteer and goes above and beyond for any scout or scout unit that
needs her help. Our scoutmaster, Paul Vaughn, was awarded the
Silver Beaver which is the highest award a Council can bestow upon
a volunteer. It is also a much deserved award.
As always, we appreciate the support from FUMC and its members.
We couldn’t make it without that support.

New Furniture for the Classrooms
During Spring Break you may have seen a semi-truck at the Day
School. It was delivering all of our new tables and chairs for the classrooms!
The proceeds from our Butter Braid sales allowed us to buy laminate top tables
and plastic/steel chairs. Our old furniture was wooden and harder to care for
than the new furniture will be. The kids were so excited to see the new
furniture when they came back from holiday. Thank you to all of our parents
that sold Butter Braids and to all of you that purchased them to help us raise the
money for these items.
Early Enrollment The Day School will begin early enrollment for Camp SONshine 2013 and the 2013-2014 school year on
April 1st. Early enrollment will be open to current Day School families and First United Methodist Church
members. Open enrollment for the general public will begin April 15th. Camp SONshine offers classes for
ages 2 (by September 1, 2013) to children who have completed 5th grade. The 2013-2014 school year will
have classes for children 18 months to 4-years-old by September 1, 2013. Please contact the Day School office
for more information.

The 4-year-old classes made robots at
home with their families and brought them
to school for a parade in the CLC. Far

Western Day
On Friday, March 8th, the Day

ern gear. They made stick horses in
their classes and then took them for a
ride during stick horse races, cattle
roping and other western games.

Lately I have been reading a book by Zach Neese
entitled "How to Worship A King". While I am
only through a portion of the book, the implica-
tions explained so far have not only opened my
eyes, but reached my heart. It describes how
Christian's have done an amazing job over the
last 2000 years keeping God away from the very
people that seek Him. While that sounds terrible,
it is also very exciting that we have the
opportunity to make changes in our worship that
can modify our perspective on what worship
really is — that our time together as a church
body is our time to minister to God, not to please
ourselves.
Zach tells the story of a visit he had at a small
church. He says: “I’ll never forget the day I was
in a worship service at a small town church. The
musicianship was bad, the singing was bad, the
leadership was bad, and the song selection was
bad. Everything was bad. The people couldn’t
even clap on time. And as I stood there snarkily
critiquing every aspect of the service in my mind,
I felt a hand shove against my chest. It pushed so
hard that it rocked me back on my heels. I don’t
like to be touched that way, and I took offense to
it. So when I looked down to see whose hand was
on my chest, ready to share some stern words
with them, I was surprised to find that there was
no hand. No one was touching me. Even so, I
could feel the hand, and all five fingers pressing
against my chest. It was a strong, solid hand.
Then I heard a voice inside my head say, “That is
not yours to judge. That is mine.”
What a stern reminder that when we gather
together on Sunday morning, it is not our
position to judge the music we sing, how well we
can sing, if the message blew us away that
morning, or even if it was a good or bad worship
time. Only God can tell us how things went on
any given morning. If we direct our worship to
the one who it was intended for, then who are we
to judge.
Thank you God for allowing us time to come
together and praise you. Thank you for people
who can stand side by side and submerge them-
selves in your presence. And thank you for shar-
ing such a powerful feeling of love and whole-
ness when we praise and worship who you are.
Amen!
