Dearest Fellow OLA Parishioners,

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce my wife and I. My name is Deacon Rudy Leyva. My wife, Monique and I have been married for 34 years and have five beautiful children: Jessica, Stephen and Michael (who are twins), Matthew and Benjamin who is a junior at Bishop Amat High school. Also, we are the proud grandparents of Isabella and Elijah Leyva.

Monique and I have been a deacon couple for 12 years and had been parish-ioners at Sacred Heart Parish for approximately 30 years.

During those years we had served in various ministries, such as: Adopt-A-Family, San Gabriel Winter Homeless Coalition and the Thanksgiving Outreach Project. We have also served as ministers of Communion, lectors and religious education instructors.

I was ordained as a deacon in 2007 with the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and work full time as a dentist. I have been a dentist for over three decades and enjoy being able to provide my patients with the best of care.

In 2016 we moved to the city of La Verne and after much prayer and discernment, have been led by the Holy Spirit to minister to the beautiful parish community of OLA. We recognize that this is now our new home away from home. Our transition has been smooth, and we feel very blessed that Fr. Charles Ramirez has welcomed us with open arms, and the good people of OLA have been most welcoming to us.

We look forward in working with all the clergy, deacon couples, staff and faculty and you the parishion-ers of OLA. Thank you once again for your loving support and we look forward in meeting each and every one of you.

Deacon Rudy and Monique Leyva

Parish Mission is Dec. 10

Mark your calendar for our exciting Advent Parish Mission – one night only – Tuesday, Dec. 10, at 7 p.m. in the church. Matthew Petrusek, is a Word On Fire Institute Fellow, and hosts a weekly show on WordNet TV called Reasons to Believe. As a professor at Loyola Marymount University and Ph. D. in theological ethics, he uses Scripture, the Catechism and great minds of Church tradition to make Catholic doctrine clear and relevant. “Catholics recognize the power of reason to demonstrate the existence of God,” he says. “Yet the God of reason is known more for what He is not than for what He is. The birth of Christ, however, concludes the phi-losopher’s speculations, transforming them into a relationship with our living, breathing Lord.” This Advent, join Professor Petrusek as he cele-brates one of Christmas’s greatest gifts.

Advent Prayer Creator God, author of all life and light, in this season of antic-ipation you call us to recognize your light in our midst, your love in our darkness. Lead us from the darkness of despair into a light of hope and peace. Wake us from the shadows of our trou-bled lives into a light that dispels our fears and concerns. May your presence maintain our wakefulness, as we prepare for your coming more deeply into our hearts. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

member of the parish to make a difference, large or small.

What the councils want the parish to know this month

Pastoral Council

This month, the leadership councils participat-ed in a training exercise by answering Six Ques-tions to Gain Clarity: Why do we exist? How do we behave? What do we do? How will we suc-ceed? What is most important right now? and Who must do what? The exercise was led by Mar-garet Woodard, a professional consultant who of-fers training and advice as a gift to the parish.

The purpose of the exercise was two-fold: 1) To offer well-rounded education to new members

and 2) To help each coordinating council clarify its role and goals for a successful 2020.

Everyone dug into the questions with enthusi-asm and focus. New members appreciated the clarity they gained through the exercise.

They reviewed the commitment of OLA lead-ers to the C-D-I process of implementing change through Consulting all parties to be affected, iden-tifying which persons or group ought to make a Decision, and Informing everyone who has a stake in the decision before it is implemented. This process contributes to transparency at OLA.

Adopt-A-Family For over 40 years, OLA

Adopt-A-Family has made it possible for struggling fami-lies with children in the Po-mona Valley to have a magi-cal Christmas and experience the Gift of Christ.

The program assists families nominated by Uncommon Good, St. Vincent de Paul Society and the San Gabriel/Pomona Regional Center.

Parishioners provide gift cards for the fam-ilies to shop themselves, or donate a wrapped gift for each family member and food for Christmas dinner. Donations may be brought to OLA, to the Uncommon Good offices, or di-rectly to the adopted family. Donors can partner with a friend to share the expense.

Register after all Masses this weekend, or contact Elizabeth Preciado at (909) 625-2248 and [email protected].

Angel Tree OLA is seeking 230 angels

to donate a wrapped gift to a child whose parent is in prison. The program sponsored by JustAct Ministry was so popu-lar last year, we increased our commitment!

Parishioners are invited to pick up a Christmas tag with the name, age and needs of a child next weekend, Nov. 30-Dec. 1.

Return wrapped gifts to the patio after Mass Dec. 7-8 and Dec. 14-15 or to the parish of-fice by Dec. 16 – Attn: Deacon Jim Allgaier.

Share the cost with a friend!

Alternate Gift Christmas Market The OLA alternative to consumerism is our 34th Alternative Gift Christmas Market. Begin

the holiday season with the true spirit of Christmas! “Shopping lists” are available online at www.olaclaremont.org or at the parish office.

Choose gifts for the poor in our community and around the world. Most participating agencies have a direct connection to OLA (see Page 6). Bring your list to the parish office by Monday, Dec. 23, and receive beautiful Christmas cards to present to friends and relatives.

Also, an After-Market is scheduled in the auditorium on Sunday Dec. 8, after morning Masses, for your convenience.
