Jubilee Year of Mercy September 25, 2016

Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Jubilee for Catechists

Amos castigates religious people who, “comfortably complacent” (6:1, 5), ignore the unfolding collapse of culture, nation, religion (6:6). In Jesus’ parable, such complacency becomes the rich man’s undoing. He neither hurt nor harmed Lazarus, neither denied him leftovers nor ordered him removed. That is Jesus’ devastating point. The rich man did nothing wrong to Lazarus; he just did nothing at all good for him. Only in death, separated by “a great chasm” (Luke 16:26), could the rich man final-ly see Lazarus, whom he had failed to see in life, right before his eyes. Like the rich man’s “five brothers still in my father’s house” (16:27–28), we who are alive in the Church still have time to see that same Someone, Jesus, lying neglected right at our door—and time to do something. Who, specifically, concretely, practically, is Lazarus in my life? What can I do for that Jesus-in-the-flesh during this Jubilee Year of Mercy? —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Wednesday Evening Holy Hour, Confessions and Rosary Prayer Group

On Wednesday, September 28th we have Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament from 6:00 – 7:00 pm with Confessions available from 6:00 – 6:45pm.

The Rosary & Devotion Prayer Group meets at 7:00pm following the Holy Hour. – All are welcome.

Sant’ Egidio Community The Community of Sant’ Egidio gathers here at St. Joseph’s every Thursday at 7:00pm. Beginning in silence, prayer starts with an opening song, reading of the Word, sung prayers, and end in silence. Prayer promptly begins at 7pm and is done by about 7:20pm. Join us for tea and fellowship in the Church entrance. All are welcome; we look forward to having you pray with us.

ANNOUNCEMENTS Sunday Collection Information Last Sunday, September 18th we only received approxi-mately 31% of our weekly goal for the support of our parish church: 8:00am Mass: $815.78 9:30am Mass: $1,215.84 11:00am Spanish Mass: $708.60 --------------------------------- Total: $2,740.22 $8,875 is the current weekly amount needed in order to properly sustain, operate and improve our histor ic parish of St. Joseph the Worker. To simply continue operating as a functioning church we need a bare minimum of $4,900 per week. People are being spiritually fed and helped through our parish and Bishop Michael Barber is very supportive of St. Joseph as he desires for us to flour-ish as a parish but in order to do so we absolutely need your spiritual and financial support! Some very important questions we should all be asking ourselves at St. Joseph the Worker parish:

Do I withhold from giving back to God what is rightly due God?

Is my Sunday offering, which is brought forth to the Altar and being presented to God as “my sacrificial gift” something that is truly sacrificial and thus pleas-ing to God? Or am I offering God scraps or my

leftovers?

Is not my God and the support of my Catholic parish church where people are being spiritually fed, nour-ished, renewed, reconciled and being healed by God not worthy of 2 hours of my 40 hours worth of wages?

Is 2 hours out of 40 hours or 5% of my weekly income really just too much to give back to God in gratitude for all the blessings I receive, especially when every-thing we receive from God is a gift in itself?

As a priest of our parish, I myself contribute $50.00 per week to St. Joseph the Worker as just part of my financial offering to God and His Church. Please seriously and prayerfully reconsider increasing your Sunday offerings proportionately, as it is your personal sacrifice that is being presented to God for the support and help of His Church. 5% is not unreasonable and besides we can’t out do God in generosity. Thank you and blessings to all of you, Fr. Kenneth Nobrega

St. Joseph, pray for us.

Parish Office Hours Gloria Maldonado, our new office secretary is ready to welcome and assist our parishioners and visitors.

St. Joseph the Worker Parish Office Hours are from Tuesday thru Friday 9:00am to 6:00pm

Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happi-ness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: “If you knew the gift of God!” You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought af-ter, loved, and forgiven by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this of you, Lord Jesus, through the inter-cession of Mary, Mother of Mercy; you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen.
