Miyopimatisiwin
First Peoples’ House (FPH) supports over 1,300 First Nation, Métis, and Inuit students across all faculties at the University of Alberta (UAlberta).
Post-secondary education offers many benefits, including empowering students to pursue their dreams, but it can also be challenging. Surveys show that many students across campuses in Alberta feel overwhelmed and struggle with mental health issues.
At FPH, we understand the importance of living healthy and staying active—especially during times of stress. A growing amount of research shows that engaging in regular physical activity can have a positive impact on mental health. This is what inspired us to create a program at FPH that allows our students to access on-campus fitness classes or join a sport team, cost-free, through Campus and Community Recreation. Given that finances are a barrier to post-secondary education for First Nation, Métis, and Inuit students, we created the Miyopimâtiswin program to provide students with the opportunity to engage in regular exercise without having to worry about the associated costs. Our Annual Miyopimâtiswin Golf Tournament raises funds to support this important program at FPH.
The choice to name the golf tournament Miyopimâtiswin—a Cree term that means a good life or a good way of living—was simple. It aligns with our vision for our students: to live a good life and to thrive at the University of Alberta. At FPH, we believe that with your care and support, our vision can continue to be a reality.
By supporting our golf tournament, you are providing First Nation, Métis, and Inuit students with the opportunity to engage in physical activity and connect with their peers outside of the classroom, with the added benefit of improving the mental and physical health of our students.
We invite all interested individuals and corporations to join us in supporting First Nation, Métis, and Inuit students at the University of Alberta on their journey of higher education. Learn more about how you can support First Nation, Métis, and Inuit learners at UAlberta at uab.ca/FPH.

A Message from Our Students
I’ve had the pleasure of managing the FPH Thunderbirds in the hockey intramurals provided
by the UofA. This team has helped me find community through sport and has connected
myself to Indigenous students from different faculties. The team created the possibility to
make long lasting friendships between teammates and provided space to improve team
building skills. It also allows students to de-stress from school and get active.

Being part of the FPH intramural hockey team has allowed many indigenous students to
connect and build community. Most of the players have never had the opportunity to play
hockey and being part of the team allows them to engage in a positive atmosphere where
they are able to learn new skills. For myself the team provides a break from the stresses of life
as a student as well as a fun way to get physical activity. Everyone I’ve met that plays on the
team is thankful to have the program in place.

tân’si my name is Chelsea Behn and I am a fourth year Native Studies student. I am so
grateful for First Peoples’ House for providing miyopimâtisiwin, which means living the good
life in Cree, because it gives me, and other Indigenous students the opportunity to become
more active and it allows us access to trying more interesting workout classes. In the past I
have taken zumba classes, and right now I am currently in a beginner kickboxing class. It
is beneficial because as students we can’t always afford to try cool things, but
miyopimâtisiwin gives me and other Indigenous students the opportunity to try. This
program is very good because it promotes a healthy way of living. It gives students
a time when we can destress, where we aren’t thinking about school, and
allows us to have fun while exercising. hiy hiy
