ORGAN PRELUDE: “The Good Shepherd”

Dale Wood (1934-2003)

ANNOUNCEMENTS

*[Please stand for the lighting of the candles]

CALL TO WORSHIP

Come to the Good Shepherd who calls for his sheep.

We come with joy to hear that familiar voice.

The Shepherd calls us to follow.

We trust the One who lays down his life for us.

Our Shepherd leads us to full and abundant life.

*HYMN: “Sing Praise to God, Who Has Shaped” NCH #22

PRAYER OF INVOCATION

If I were a bird and able to fly afar,

I would like to be a white dove

to guide people to freedom.

If I were a grain of sand,

I would throw myself down

to make a path for people.

If I were the cloud in the sky,

I would shelter and bring rains

to the rice fields.

I would sacrifice my life

for the suffering people.

I would sacrifice my self

No matter how many times

I would have to die. Anna May Say Pa, Burma Institute of Theology

*THE LORD'S PRAYER (trespasses) Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on

earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we

forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory forever. Amen.

*GLORIA PATRI Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is

now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen

SCRIPTURE READING: Psalm 23

ANTHEM: “The Lord Is My Shepherd”

Franz Schubert (1797-1828)

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He is my shepherd, I shall not want.

He maketh me to lie in green pastures,

He leadeth me beside still waters.

He giveth peace unto my soul;

He leadeth me in paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.

Yea, though I walk through death’s dark vale of shadows,

Then shall I fear no evil; for Thou art still with me.

Thy rod and staff they comfort me.

Thou preparest for me a table before me in the presence of mine enemies:

My head with oil Thou anointest; my cup runneth over

Yea, surely goodness and mercy all my life shall follow me;

And I will dwell within Thy house for evermore.

MORNING PRAYER

CONGREGATION’S JOYS AND CONCERNS God is our Shepherd.

We will never want.

God can restore our souls.

God leads us in right paths.

Even through the darkest of times, we fear nothing.

For our God is ever with us;

God protects and comforts us.

Let us offer our silent prayers…

Notes On Today’s Anthem:

Psalm 23 Franz Schubert (1797-1828)

Schubert composed this setting - originally not of the text in English, as

heard today, but of Moses Mendelssohns’s German version of the

renowned psalm - in 1820. It was written for a soirée given in Vienna by

four musical sisters, the Fröhlichs, one of whom was a singing teacher.

The piece quickly became a favorite and (unusually with Schubert) was

soon published.
