HAIDA ROLE MODEL PROGRAM

Rationale

The purpose of the Haida Role Model program is to assist teachers to integrate Haida

knowledge and perspective into the curriculum and to establish connections between the

school district community and the Haida community.

Through the Haida Role Model program, students will gain a better understanding of aboriginal

issues and diversity at the local, provincial and national levels. With this understanding

community relations will be enhanced. Teachers will also find that the program facilitates the

integration of meaningful aspects of the students’ lives in the content of the curriculum and in the

classroom experience.

The provincial education system in British Columbia provides a high degree of autonomy and

choice. There are no prescribed texts; teachers will be supported in their use of local or self-

developed materials to achieve the prescribed learning outcomes in the curricula. Teachers can

also develop integrated units at all grade levels. The Haida Role Model program provides a

valuable resource for these kinds of curriculum initiatives.

Guidelines for Working with Role Models

1. Role models should only be brought into the classroom when children have developed good

questions to ask them. The process of developing good questions is part of active inquiry,

which is central to the social studies curriculum and valuable in all aspects of learning.

2. Every role model has his or her own personal history and strengths that can be a rich resource

for the students. Where possible, teachers are encouraged to talk with role models before

bringing them in, to gain a better understanding of their unique qualities and the learning

possibilities they bring to the classroom. Teachers should also consider the use of field trips

and outdoor settings that will help role models to share their knowledge more fully.

3. Students will learn more from exposure to several role models over the course of the year

than just one or two. The knowledge and perspectives of different role models are

complementary to one another, yielding deeper insights into Haida history, culture, and

contemporary life.

4. Students should be prepared to treat role models with respect, to make them feel welcome,

and to express appreciation for their contributions. One or two students should be asked to

greet the role model when they arrive at the school and conduct them to the classroom.

Following the role model’s last visit, the students should thank them, by writing letters,

sending them drawings or other work, or presenting them with photographs taken during their

time with the class. It is equally important for all the school staff to help to make the role

model feel welcome by acknowledging them with a greeting when they are in the school.

Administrative Guidelines for Teachers

It is important that expectations are clearly laid out and everyone participating is informed of the

program and the process prior to the visit.

When planning to initiate Haida role model visits, it is essential that the following steps be

followed:

1. Contact the FNRW (First Nations Resource Worker) in your school with a clear idea of

your classroom needs. The FNRW will provide advice and assist the teacher throughout

the process.

2. When plans are clear and agreed upon, classroom teacher fills out a copy of the Role

Model Request Form (see Appendix A) this form must be signed by school Principal,

the request form is then returned to FNRW a copy is then sent to the Principal of

Aboriginal Education (for budget purposes and long term usage ie: more than 4

visits).

3. FNRW to confirm with classroom teacher who will contact the role model either the

classroom teacher or FNRW role model is then booked.

(It is advisable to give role models at least 1 week’s notice, as they can have a busy schedule

and need adequate time to prepare. It is recommended that FNRW re-contact role models the

day before the visit, and again in the morning of the day of the visit to confirm the

preparations.) If transportation for the role model is required, this should be arranged by the

FNRW and/or host teacher.

4. Inform administrator and office staff of the name of the visitor and the time and purpose of

the visit well in advance.

5. A Role Model Program summary report (see Appendix B) must be forwarded to the

District Aboriginal Education Office within 2 days of the visit. This report will outline

strengths of this process and suggest areas for improvement. This will aid the District

Office in improving the program overall and provide valuable feedback to role models.

However, if the role model is going to make more than one visit to your classroom in a

relatively short period of time then it is not necessary to complete more than one form.

6. FNRW completes a Request for Payment form that also must be signed off by school

Principal then sent to Principal of Aboriginal Education @ Board Office.

Fax:250-559-8849 for payment. Please ensure that the payment form is complete with

address, phone number, date(s) and duration of visit(s).

Finance

Fund distribution to schools per school year: QCSS, SNES, TAH, GMD $1700.00 PCES, ALM

$600.00

1. The funds for the program will come from Provincial Aboriginal funds.

2. Role models will receive an honorarium of $25.00 per hour.

3. If each school does not use their total allocation for this program by March 2013, another

school may request additional visits.
