Introduction

There is an island of arts and culture, almost a little paradise, surrounded by beautiful nature, in the close neighbourhood of the Baltic Sea near Kiel in the North of Germany. A place that has a long and interes-ting history. Kings, philosophers, composers, writers, painters came here. This place is the Seekamp estate. In the 90ties of the last century the famous German sculp-tor Hans Kock started to revitalize this rich tradition of the Seekamp estate by founding together with the City of Kiel the Hans Kock Foundation. His wife Anna Kock, was daughter of the important German paintor’s dynas-ty of the Oldes, the former landlords of the estate. So he had a close familiar relation to the estate. Kock, who died 2007, had the idea to create Seekamp as entire work of art by integrating his sculptures into the beautiful landscape, creating a gallery and a visitors centre in the old buildings. He worked hard on his vi-sion and before he died he managed to realize many of his plans and to form Seekamp as a melting pot of arts, culture and nature.One of his aims was to promote young artists and to support international art exchange. To fulfil this aim in 2014 Dr. Johanna Beckmann, the daughter of Kock and head of the Kock foundation and the North Ger-man sculptor Jörg Plickat created the idea to organize an international symposium with young high talented students from Spain and China accompanied by some of their professors in Seekamp in Summer 2015.

Hay una isla de las artes y de la cultura, un pe-queño paraíso rodeado de naturaleza cerca del mar Báltico, en Kiel, norte de Alemania. Un lugar que tiene una larga e interesante historia. Reyes, filósofos, com-positores, escritores y pintores vinieron a este lugar: la finca Seekamp. En los años noventa del siglo pasado el famoso escultor alemán Hans Kock comenzó a revita-lizar esta rica tradición de la finca Seekamp creando, junto con la ciudad de Kiel, la Fundación Hans Kock. Su esposa Anna Kock, es descendiente de los Oldes, una importante dinastía de pintores alemanes, los antiguos propietarios de la finca. Kock, que murió el 2007, tuvo la idea de crear Seekamp integrando sus esculturas en el hermoso paisaje, crean-do además, una galería y un centro de visitantes en los antiguos edificios. Trabajó duro en su sueño y antes de morir se las arregló para realizar muchos de sus planes para crear Seekamp, un crisol de las artes, la cultura y la naturaleza. Uno de sus objetivos era promover a los artistas jóve-nes y apoyar el intercambio internacional de arte. Para alcanzar este objetivo, en 2014 la Dra. Johanna Beck-mann, la hija de Kock y directora de la Fundación Kock y el escultor alemán Jörg Plickat tuvieron la idea de organizar un simposio internacional con jóvenes estu-diantes de España y China acompañado por algunos de sus profesores en Seekamp para el verano de 2015.

Before the symposium will start in Seekamp with international students the sculptor Jörg Plickat will held a workshop “Abstract Composition” at the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University Juan Carlos in Aranjuez near Madrid in spring 2015, similar as he did in 2014. In this workshop the participating students will develop 3D projects to realize later as big dimensioned low bu-dget projects for sculptural outside interventions. The workshop will be a competition. The 5 best student wor-ks will be selected to be realized in the 1. International Hans Kock Symposium in Seekamp.In autumn 2014 Jörg Plickat will try to realize a similar workshop or a competition at the China National Aca-demy in Hangzhou, where Plickat taught also frequent-ly before. The intention is to find also up to 5 Chinese students to participate with their projects in the sym-posium. The Hans Kock Symposium will be great chance for the young students to develop and realize their first big size project outside their home countries in an international forum. This project intends to help young talented stu-dent to make first international artistic experience and to start their international career.

Antes del comienzo del simposio de Seekamp con los estudiantes internacionales del escultor Jörg Plickat realizará un taller de “Composición abstracta” en la Facultad de Bellas Artes de la Universidad Rey Juan Carlos en Aranjuez, cerca de Madrid en la prima-vera de 2015, tal y como lo hizo en 2014. En este ta-ller los alumnos participantes desarrollarán proyectos en 3D para realizarlos después en grandes dimensiones con matieriales de bajo presupuesto. De todos los traba-jos se seleccionarán los 5 mejores para su realización en el I Simposio Internacional Hans Kock.En otoño de 2014 Jörg Plickat tratará de realizar un ta-ller similar o una competición en la Academia Nacional de China en Hangzhou, donde Plickat ha enseñado con anterioridad. La intención es encontrar un máximo de 5 estudiantes chinos que participen también con sus pro-yectos en el simposio. El simposio será una gran oportunidad para que los jóvenes estudiantes realicen su primer proyecto de grandes dimensiones fuera de sus países de origen en un foro internacional. Este proyecto pretende ayudar a jóvenes estudiantes en su primera experiencia artística internacional y a iniciar su carrera internacional.

Matter

The main part of the project will take place in Seekamp. The students from China and Spain will meet in this international event in the Seekamp Estate to dis-cuss, interact and to realize their selected projects in big dimensions in low budget materials like construction wood or construction steel. Realizing their formal ideas they will be confronted with their selected matters. Stu-dents will have to fight with technical difficulties, they will learn to handle with their materials in a professio-nal way, some concepts will have to be changed due to technical reasons but all this will stations of the sculp-tural finding process on the way from form to matter. This is part of the intension of this workshop and it will develop the students’ formal understanding. Students will also discuss their process of form finding and later their results in the group.The students will live in guest families in Schilksee vi-llage nearby. So they will learn about German live. They will learn to explain their artistic ideas to their hosts in other languages. Their accompanying professors from Madrid and Hangzhou will live in the romantic Foun-dation’s building in Seekamp.The students will work around 10 days on their pro-ject. The symposium will have a wide spread cultural program with discussion evenings and visits of places of cultural interest in the North of Germany and Ham-burg, exhibition openings and the international Kiel festival “Kieler Woche”.

La parte principal del proyecto se realizará en Seekamp. Los estudiantes procedentes de China y Es-paña se darán cita para discutir, interactuar y hacer realidad sus proyectos seleccionados en grandes di-mensiones en materiales de bajo presupuesto, como la madera o el acero para la construcción. Los estu-diantes tendrán que luchar con las dificultades técni-cas, teniendo que aprender a manejar los materiales de manera profesional. Los conceptos originales ten-drán que ir cambiado por razones técnicas, pero todo esto forma parte del proceso de hallazgo escultórico en el camino de la idea a la materia. Esto es parte de los objetivos de este taller así como el trabajo en el proceso conceptual de la pieza. Los estudiantes tam-bién deberán discutir y defender su proyecto y sus resultados en grupo. Los estudiantes vivirán en familias de acogida en el cercano pueblo de Schilksee. De esta forma aprende-rán de primera mano la cultura alemana. Los estudiantes trabajarán alrededor de 10 días en su proyecto con la ayuda de sus porfesores y deberán defender y discutir sus piezas con alumnos, profe-sores y artistas de otros países. El simposio contará con un amplio programa cultural se complementará con veladas de discusión y visitas a lugares de interés cultural en el norte de Alemania y Hamburgo, inau-guraciones de exposiciones y el festival internacional de Kiel “Kieler Woche”.

Space

As final act of the symposium the students will “conquer” with their finished works the space of See-kamp. Together they will develop a concept to integrate and install their finished works into the Seekamp lands-cape in a temporary limited sensitive dialogue with the monumental sculptures of the Foundation Founder Hans Kock. The appearance of the students’ work will be transpa-rent, lightly, fragile, vulnerable. It will be a great task for the group to create an exciting contrast to the per-manently installed heavy and durable granite and metal sculptures of Kock.The result will be dialogue full of tensions and contra-dictions - united in search for their language of form. There will be a closure festival at the end of the sympo-sium to introduce and explain the results to the public.Later the students’ work will be on display in other pla-ces.

C omo acto final del simposio los estudiantes “conquistarán” con sus obras finales el espacio de See-kamp. Juntos van a desarrollar un trabajo de integra-ción e instalación sus obras en el paisaje en un diálogo con las esculturas monumentales del fundador de la Fundación Hans Kock. En este diálogó contrastará la fragilidad, la ligereza y lo efímero de los trabajos de los estudiantes con la pe-sadez y lo duradero de los trabajos en granito y metal de KocK.El resultado será un diálogo lleno de tensiones y con-tradicciones pero unidos en la búsqueda del lengua-je de la forma. Habrá un festival de cierre al final del simposio para presentar y explicar los resultados al público. Una vez finalizado el simposium internacional el tra-bajo de los estudiantes estará en exhibición en otros lugares.

The Place

One of The Symposion will take place in June 2015 in the Hans Kock Foundation in the Seekamp estate in Kiel in the North of Germany. The famous German Sculptor Hans Kock has created a wonderfully balan-ced sculpture park in a landscape of soft hills, old trees and moats, close to the Baltic coast, surrounded by grain fields.The Seekamp estate has an interesting history. By exca-vations was found out that there was a first settlement in Seekamp in Neolithic times. In historic documents See-kamp was first mentioned in the 13th century. In the 16th century there was built first a very small water castle by the Earls of Rantzau, as it is shown on old drawings. For a short time during 17th century it was residence of the Danish King Christian IV. In the 18th century Seekamp became an aristocratic estate and the water castle was de-molished. The estate was rebuilt with an administration building, stables and big barns. It had become the im-portant logistic function to support the Danish fortress Friedrichsort with alimentation. When the North of Germany became Prussian, the See-kamp estate lost his former strategic importance. After some owners it became domicile of the important Ger-man painter Hans Olde the older. Seekamps tradition as meeting point of art and culture started in that is period. Famous musicians like Johannes Brahms, writers like Detlev von Liliencron, and painters like Lewis Corinth visited Olde in Seekamp. As one of leading persons in arts

and culture in that time in Germany Olde was head of the Academy of Arts in Weimar and later in Kassel. In the twenties of the last century after the death of Hans Olde the older, his Son Hans Olde the younger, also a painter, took over the estate. His daughter Anna later became the wife of Hans Kock. Olde the younger preferred the ur-ban life stile. Seekamp was in a very bad condition due to family losses and economic after the world war when he sold it 1926. It became property of the City of Kiel. In 1927, in a unique experiment, Seekamp became site of the first children’s republic in the world. 2000 emerging childs found their temporary home in a tent camp with democratic structures. 1933 the Nazis closed the camp. Seekamp had no more function. In 1986 Hans Kock and his family founded his foundation and started to restructurate the entire estate as a complete work of art with the integration of 12 of his monumental sculptures into the landscape.

The PlaceEl Symposion se llevará a cabo en junio de 2015, de la Fundación Hans Kock en el lugar conoci-do como Seekamp en Kiel, en el norte de Alemania. El famoso escultor alemán Hans Kock ha creado un parque de esculturas maravillosamente equilibrado en un paisaje de suaves colinas, árboles viejos y fosos cerca de la costa del mar Báltico, rodeado de campos de cereales. La finca Seekamp tiene una interesante historia. Por las excavaciones se descubrió un primer asentamien-to en el Neolítico. En los documentos históricos See-kamp fue mencionado por primera vez en el siglo XIII. En el siglo XVI se construyó un pequeño castillo de agua por los condes de Rantzau, como muestran los antiguos dibujos. Por un corto periodo, durante siglo XVII, fue residencia del rey danés Christian IV. En el siglo XVIII se transformó en una finca aristo-crática y se demolió el castillo de agua. La finca fue reconstruida con un edificio administrativo, establos y grandes graneros. Con el paso del tiempo tomó im-portancia logística como apoyo de la fortaleza danesa Friedrichsort. Cuando el norte de Alemania se convirtió en Pru-sia, la finca Seekamp perdió su antigua importancia estratégica. Tras el paso de diversos propietarios se convirtió en el domicilio del importante pintor ale-mán Hans Olde. El Paraje de Seekamps se convirtió en un punto de encuentro del arte y la cultura. Músi-cos famosos como Johannes Brahms, escritores como Detlev von Liliencron y pintores como Lewis Corinto visitaron a Olde en Seekamp. Olde fué uno de los ma-yores exponentes de la cultura alemana y como tal fue director de la Academia de Artes de Weimar y más tarde en Kassel. En los años veinte del siglo pasado después de la muerte de Hans Olde su hijo, también pintor, se hizo cargo de la finca. Su hija Anna más

tarde se convirtió en la esposa de Hans Kock. Debido a una época de probelmas económicos deapués de la Guerra Mundial la familia lo terminaría vendiendo el terreno 1926 pasando a serpropiedad de la ciudad de Kiel. 1927 en un experimento único, Seekamp se convirtió en la primera República infantil en el mundo. 2000 niños encontraron su hogar temporal en un campa-mento con estructuras democráticas. 1933 los nazis cerraron el campamento. Desde entones Seekamp no tuvo más usos. En 1986 Hans Kock y su familia fundaron su funda-ción y comenzaron a recuperar toda la finca como una obra de arte completa con la integración de 12 de sus esculturas monumentales en el paisaje.

One of the most important German sculptors of the later post war period. First he studied architecture in Braunschweig. Then he changed to sculpture in Ham-burg. As the most important master pupil of the Ger-man Sculptor and Bauhaus teacher Gerhard Marks he was presented - beside many other important museum shows - 1964 in the documenta III Kassel and the World Exhibitions in Montreal 1967 and 1970 in Osaka. He realized numerous monumental works in urban space and in churches, mostly in North Germany, but also all over the world. He got various high prizes and awards. 1954 he got first national attention with the Hamburg Lichtwark award and scholarship. One year in later the important scholarship award of the BDI (Association of German Industries) followed. 1962 he received the Villa Romana award of the German Federal Republic. 1989 he was Guest of Honour in the German Academy Villa Massimo in Rome, which is the Germany’s highest con-tribution to a living artist. Beside that he received many local awards and prizes. Kock developed his formal lan-guage based on his experiences in granite sculpture. He realized several monuments himself from granite. He also worked a lot with bronze and aluminium casts. He also made numerous remarkable portraits, very well known is his portrait of Martin Heidegger.Hans Kock was highly interested also in western and eastern philosophy. He became a personal friend of the famous German philosopher Heidegger, and due to his

contacts to Japan - Japanese museums and collector were highly interested in his work - he studied Zen Bu-ddhism and the Tao. When Hans Kock was getting older, he started to create his Foundation to build up a place to promote the inter-national dialogue in arts, nature, culture and philoso-phy, and last not least, to support young artists.

Fue uno de los más importantes escultores alema-nes de la posguerra. Estudió arquitectura en Brauns-chweig. Luego cambió a la escultura en Hamburgo. Fué alumo de uno de los más importantes del escultores de Alemania, el profesor de la Bauhaus Gerhard Marks. Este le presentó - junto a otras muchas exposiciones en importantes museos - en la Documenta de Kassel III de 1964 y las Exposiciones Mundiales de Montreal 1967 y 1970 en Osaka. Realizó numerosas obras monumentales en el espacio urbano y en iglesias, en su mayoría en el norte de Ale-mania, pero también realizó trabajos por todo el mun-do. Obtuvo multitud de importantes premios. 1954 llamó la atención de la cultura alemana con el premio Hamburgo Lichtwark. Un año más tarde, se le concedió la importante beca de la BDI (Asociación de la Indus-tria Alemana). 1962 recibió el premio Villa Romana de la República Federal Alemana. 1989 fue invitado de ho-nor en la Academia Alemana Villa Massimo en Roma, el más alto reconocimiento de Alemania a un artista vivo. Además recibió muchos premios y reconocimien-tos locales. Kock desarrolló su lenguaje formal basádose en sus ex-periencias en la escultura de granito. También trabajó mucho con los moldes de bronce y aluminio e hizo nu-merosos retratos notables, muy conocido es el retrato de Martin Heidegger. Hans Kock estaba muy interesada también en la filoso-fía occidental y oriental. Fue amigo personal del célebre filósofo alemán Heidegger, y debido a sus contactos aen Japón - museos y coleccionista japoneses estaban muy interesados en su trabajo - estudió budismo Zen y Tao. Cuando Hans Kock se fue haciendo mayor, empezó a crear su Fundación para construir un lugar para pro-mover el diálogo internacional en las artes, la naturale-za, la cultura y la filosofía, y apoyar a los jóvenes artistas.

Jörg Plickat

Is a German sculptor, born 1954, from the genera-tion following Hans Kock. After his studies in Kiel he has participated in more than 300 shows worldwide. He has realized more than 80 monumental works in four continents. He received numerous scholarships and na-tional and international awards. As lecturer and invi-ted professor he was teaching theory of arts in China and Spain. As managing director and member of the board of the Hanne Darboven Foundation after her death in 2009 he brought back Hanne Darboven’s work to the leading museums and fairs in the international art world. Also from former cultural EU projects he is highly experienced in cultural management. It was his idea to create the conception the symposium accor-ding to the intensions of Hans Kock and the Hans Kock Foundation by using his international network.

Escultor alemán, nacido en 1954, perteneciente a la generación siguiente Hans Kock. Después de sus estudios en Kiel, ha participado en más de 300 exposi-ciones en todo el mundo. Ha realizado más de 80 obras monumentales en cuatro continentes. Recibió numero-sas becas y premios nacionales e internacionales. Como conferenciante y profesor invitado ha enseñando teoría de las artes en China y España. Es director general y miembro del consejo de la Fundación Hanne Darboven que, después de su muerte en 2009, llevó la obra de esta a los principales museos y ferias en el mundo del arte internacional. También tiene una gran experiencia en la gestión cultural con proyectos culturales de la UE. Fue idea suya la creación del concepto del simposio de acuerdo con las intenciones de Hans Kock y la Funda-ción Hans Kock mediante el uso de su red internacional.
