Judas, his betrayer, knew the place because Jesus and his disciples went their often, So Judas led the way to the garden…….John 18:2 The Message

Thinking about a garden anyone? What are you going to plant? Will it be more flowers or vegetables? Will

you start them inside or buy them from the greenhouse? Are you going to let the garden go wild or will you

tame it with tilling and weeding?

The garden in the verses above doesn’t carry the same connotation as what we are thinking of this time of year

in the spring. Jesus will be betrayed and arrested after he washes his disciple’s feet, eats and prays with them

and enters the dark of the garden. We ask ourselves how this could happen, why would Judas do such a thing,

and why would they arrest such a great teacher and friend.

We are coming up on the special time of Easter but first we must consider the garden…..We will hear about and

meditate on this when we end our Lenten time and enter Holy Week. Palm Sunday we will sing Hosannas to

the King and hear and begin the reality of what will happen. On Wednesday, April 1st we will sing and pray for

the church and the world. On Maundy Thursday we will hear how Jesus washed his disciple’s feet and some

kids will take their First Communion as we hear the words, “In the night in which He was betrayed.” On Good

Friday we will see the suffering of Jesus in “The Stations of the Cross.” And then we will again be in the

    Garden.

On Easter Morning we will see Jesus in the Garden again, loving us, seeking us out and reminding us what He

did for us. He died on the cross so that we might be forgiven. Once and for all, for everyone, no take backs no

worries, no unkempt promises for us……

Please join us in Worship as we ponder and celebrate this hard yet joyous time. I’m not sure what my garden at

home will look like this year, whether it will produce or if it will be a disaster. It has happened both ways, so I

am prepared either way…. Yet I will continue to try.

But I can’t wait to meet up with Mary and Peter and John in the light of the day, to see our Risen

    Lord………….. In the Garden…..

    Yours in the Risen Christ,

    Pastor Brenda Wicklund.

And in the Garden a new tomb which no one had been placed……

    John 19: 41 The Message

  • Mark of Discipleship: Encourage

“Therefore encourage one another and build up each other, as indeed you are

    doing.”

    1Thessalonians 5:11

That’s what we are called to do. Along with the Marks of Discipleship in the month

of April we will be looking at “Encourage.”

Can you think of a time where someone has encouraged you to do something or brought you out of despair just

with their presence or a kind word? Or have you felt left out and someone has invited you somewhere? Do you

know someone that needs to feel loved and forgiven? Someone that may love coming to a function here at First

Lutheran Church, or how about someone that would love to have dinner with us at our Community meal? Or

would like to hear you are loved, forgiven and given a new start each and every day?

We are called to encourage like Jesus did to all of his disciples and to us as we hear from his words and actions.

“Jesus walked alongside his disciples. He showed them the way, and by his attitude and actions he modeled

for them how to live faithfully in the world. Jesus expects us to do the same within the many communities of

faith in which we live, such as our families, our congregations, and our youth group. This faith practice calls

for us to encourage each other, to motivate, console, and inspire each other to live like a follower of Jesus.

The most powerful message we can give our neighbors and those we meet in life is the knowledge that Jesus

loves them; Jesus forgives them, Jesus accepts them as they are, and Jesus is always generous and gracious.

Everyone needs an encourager because everyone at some point or another will need encouragement. We

need each other to walk alongside each other.” (NEMN Practice Discipleship Learning Curriculum)

Give it a try and continue what you have been doing. This is a great way to show God’s love to those outside in

the world where there is so much heartache and turmoil. In Jesus Christ they will find peace, love, comfort and

    everlasting love.

“The most powerful message we can give our neighbors and those we meet in life is the knowledge that Jesus

loves them; Jesus forgives them; Jesus accepts them as they are: and Jesus is always generous and gracious.”

    (NEMN Practice Discipleship Learning Curriculum)

Consider yourselves encouraged to be and Encourager.

    Peace, Pastor Brenda Wicklund.
