Want to know more about apportionments?

THANKSof

The Stories of ThanksgivingIt’s the season for apple cider, cinnamon candles and harvest festivals. It’s the season for wool sweaters, knit caps and cooling pies. It’s the season for Thanksgiving.

At Jackson First United Methodist Church (FUMC), we’re celebrating “Signs of Thanksgiving” during our annual stewardship campaign. Our church is recognizing the blessings God bestows on us through your tithes and offerings. In doing so, we’re inviting guest speakers to talk during Sunday services and Wednesday Evening Fellowships about how your gifts support church staff, facilities, ministries, apportionments and more.

Wednesday, November 4, hear guest speaker Gail Gustafson, Executive Director of The Dream Center, share about their homeless shelter and transitional housing facility for women and children in Jackson. We’ll hear stories about how our support is giving center staff opportunities to love, improve and invest in local lives.

Then, on Sunday, Nov. 8, from 10 to 10:50 a.m., Memphis Conference Treasurer Larry Davis will discuss apportionments in Clayton Hall. This is your chance to find out exactly what the word, “apportionment,” means and why it keeps popping up on your church budget reports.

On Nov. 11, Aspell Recovery Center Executive Director Richard Barber will explain how his organization is helping chemically dependent men. A man who has

completed the center’s program will tell his own story, as well. Our church supports Aspell and its efforts to free the addicted, so its victories are our blessings.

Finally, Sally Graves will join our Sunday services on Nov. 15 with her testimony, “How I Learned to Give.” It’s her personal “Signs of Thanksgiving” story.

As a member of our church, you are an integral part of ministries like the Dream Center, Aspell Recovery Center, and other ministries vital to our community. We invite you to increase your involvement by filling out the Commitment Card you received in your stewardship packet. Through it, you can devote tithes, financial gifts, prayer, presence, service or witness to the church.

Place your card in the envelope found in your packet and mail it back to Jackson FUMC or return it to your Sunday School class. We’re collecting cards Nov. 18 during our Thanksgiving dinner and Nov. 22 during Celebration Sunday, as well. Or, you may give online at www.jacksonfumc.org.

Today, ponder your own blessings. What are your signs of thanksgiving?

The youth and I want to thank you for all the help with the Fall Festival! It was a great success and fun night of fellowship. We raised $1,651! This will be a great help for us planning our summer trips.

NEW INFO

Sweet Memoriesby Susan Crocker

My favorite cookbook is one I saw on my Mother’s kitchen bookshelf all the years I was growing up. It sat alongside Betty Crocker’s red and white checked cookbook, and EDS Southern Secrets cookbook. It was propped up by her wooden box of handwritten index cards of recipes. The index recipe cards were stained by drippings of gravy and meals long past.

Betty Crocker’s Dinner for Two was a beautiful blue cookbook with two taper candles on the cover. My sister and I loved to look through it and see the “gourmet” recipes of the day - Peach Melba, Chicken A La King, Sweet-sour Tuna, and our favorite Tutti-Frutti Bars. When you opened the book a confetti shower of snippets and magazine cutting of recipes would scatter all over the floor.

Recently, I came across this cookbook and once again the confetti shower fell to the floor just like a rush of

memories. As I scooped down to pick them up, I saw my Grandmothers thin-spidery writing on a recipe card for 3 Hour Yeast Rolls. But, the real treasure was when I opened the book and saw my Mother’s writing on the pages. She was a newlywed and had written, “Bill’s favorite Hamburger Pie —I lit the candles! Dec 1966” This was just before I was born. My mother is gone now, but what a sweet memory I

have of her cooking dinner for two.

I could cook out of any recipe book now, or more likely just look it up on the internet, but that wouldn’t carry the memories of my youth or a mother who shared her love of cooking with me. And that’s what I love about cooking- the traditions and stories that

come along with our favorite cooking tools and recipes, and the bonds that are formed around food. They are remembered and enjoyed long after the dishes are washed, the people gone, and the house quiet. The memories swirl around like meringue being whipped by a whisk in an old mixing bowl.
