A Newsletter Publication of First United Methodist Church, Jackson, Tennessee FIRST EDITION May 25, 2011 | Volume 10 Issue 10 jacksonfumc.org SEEKING GOD | KNOWING CHRIST | SHARING HIS LOVE FIRST EDITION We are people of story, history, and heritage. Our faith has been passed down from generation to generation. The Apostle Paul makes this clear when writing to the Corinthians: “For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you…” (1 Corinthians 11:23). He goes on to teach them about the Lord’s Supper and shares the tenets of our faith with them. Not long after I came to FUMC, Jim Holmes took me to lunch and shared with me something he had been told by a professor and mentor to him: “Anyone who knows nothing of his or her ancestry before his or her grandparents lives as an orphan.” It struck a chord with me and clearly with Jim as well, as those words compelled him to write a memoir for his grandchildren and great- grandchildren called No Orphans. I read Jim’s book, and I hope someday to write my own, so that those in my family will know about the lives of those who made their lives possible. Sunday, May 29th, we will celebrate our “Heritage at FUMC!” We will all join together for one worship service in Clayton Hall at 10 a.m., sharing memories of the church’s past, celebrating the present, with Dr. Paul Clayton offering perspective as we look to the future. Many of our members have provided photos that will be featured, and some of our senior members will share their memories through a DVD interview. By sharing in the wisdom of these saints among us, we will better learn how to live out our faith in Jesus Christ as we join “All In Ministry” together. Perhaps above all, we will remember that in the faith and witness of our church, none of us is an orphan. SEEKING GOD | KNOWING CHRIST | SHARING HIS LOVE

FIRST EDITIONWe are people of story, history, and heritage. Our faith has been passed down from generation to generation. The Apostle Paul makes

this clear when writing to the Corinthians: “For I received from the Lord what I also handed on to you…” (1 Corinthians 11:23). He goes on to teach them about the Lord’s Supper and shares the tenets of our faith with them.

Not long after I came to FUMC, Jim Holmes took me to lunch and shared

with me something he had been told by a professor and mentor to him: “Anyone who knows nothing of his or her ancestry before his or her grandparents lives as an orphan.” It struck a chord with me and clearly with Jim as well, as those words compelled him to write a memoir for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren called No Orphans. I read Jim’s book, and I hope someday

to write my own, so that those in my family will know about the lives of those who made their lives possible.

June/July Mezzanine

with Joel Allen and Chris Nye

We will be studying the Apostle Paul on some of the following topics: 1) The end of days (as in, “Will

Jesus return on May 21?”) 2) The doctrine of faith alone

(Why was he willing to fight for it?)

3) The clash of faith and culture 4) God’s purposes for

environment (Just how green was Paul?)

5) Providence and pain (If I’m really godly, can I be assured the good life?)

6) Paul and Women in Ministry Come join us! This is, of course, completely optional but might be a nice change in the summer Sunday School doldrums.
