Grant Awarded by Church Extension Committee of Jackson District UMC for Renovation of Andrews Chapel:

In November of 2014, the Trustees of Jackson First (chaired by Mr. Greg Stuart) applied for a $10,000 grant from the Jackson District Extension committee to assist with the on-going renovations of our Andrews Chapel campus. The District Extension Committee is that group which aids/assists with new church starts or, in this case, the “re-start” of a local church.

We were pleased and excited to receive a check in the office of Jackson First on Friday, January 11, 2015 granting the request for funds in full.

As you may be aware, volunteers Mark Owen and Brad Denton have been spear-heading a renovation of the former educational wing of the Andrews Chapel building. In the last few months, substantial repairs to the foundation were completed (through the long-standing termite policy) to the foundation of the sanctuary itself which dates to 1849.

These funds will allow Mark and Brad to finish the renovation of the former educational wing—completing its metamorphosis into a nursery for Sunday mornings/guest wing for visiting youth/mission groups and possible site of

overnight accommodations for families in crisis.

Immediate plans include the purchase of a stack washer/dryer unit, the completion of a restroom facility with shower stall, the addition of counter-tops, vanities and mirrors. A paint scheme consistent with the mid-1800s will be adopted, windows will be repaired/replaced in this wing, lighting added and floors refinished. Thanks to these funds and the hard work of Mark Owen, Brad Denton and other volunteers, this space will be thoroughly modernized and converted to usable space for ministry and outreach.

A big “thank-you” to our trustees, our District Superintendent, Dr. Richard Clark, Rev. Gary Morse of Lambuth Memorial UMC (Chairperson of the District Extension Committee), and our faithful heroes – Mark Owen and Brad Denton!

Mark Owen and Brad Denton accepting check for $10,000 from the Jackson District Conference.

WE NEED YOU! Breaking Bread with Shut-Ins

One of the practices I have incorporated in my ministry is to share the Lord's Supper with folks who are homebound, living in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and the like. As many persons grow older, there comes a time when they are unable to physically attend and participate in the worshiping life of the church, which is truly heartbreaking to many who have attended from infancy. When that occurs, we who are more able have a responsibility to care for them and make their attendance and participation possible in another way. Because of this, we have dedicated folks at FUMC who are committed to taking communion once a month to the folks who call this church home but who aren’t able to attend on a regular basis.

Think of it this way – the good news of Jesus came to you through someone else. Quite often it was through the generations of the faithful who have gone before us. Therefore, it is helpful to be reminded that those who are willing but not able to make it downtown also want to continue to “taste and see that the Lord is good!”

Delivering communion to folks who are shut-in is truly a blessed ministry

and it is one in which we need your help. As time has passed, there have been folks who have needed to move into other areas of service in the church for various reasons. In addition, we have a growing number of members who are now unable to attend worship with the rest of our community.

As the need is before us, I ask you to pray about this opportunity, which is for one time per month.

If you are interested in ministering through this vital ministry, please contact Jeff Rudy or Jan Kelley, ministerial assistant, at the office, 422-4002.

Christ’s peace be with you,Pastor Jeff

(P.S. If you want to read more about how this practice has been meaningful to me, check out this post on my blog from a couple of years ago: http://wesleyanrudy.com/2012/09/11/breaking-bread-with-shut-ins/)

Opportunities to Serve

Do you enjoy knitting?

A Prayer Shawl is a work of loving hands and hearts responding to the guidance of God’s Spirit, a tangible symbol of God’s love reaching in to human hearts through the prayers and service of others. Prayer Shawl Ministry members knit or crochet shawls that are given to individuals who are ill, suffering a loss, or are otherwise in the midst of a life crisis. Every time ministry team members work on the shawls, whether in a group or at home, they begin with prayer and scripture reading. Upon completion, another blessing is bestowed on the shawl and it is hand-delivered to the special recipient.

Knitters are needed… can you help? Contact Elsie Harris, 664-0973

New Year’s Resolutions

I resolve to exercise, be nicer, lose weight, quit smoking... and the list goes on. Ridiculous you scoff! Hold on just a minute! Studies have shown resolutions not to be a waste of time, especially the health ones. I can’t say in regard to “be nice”. That one is harder to measure. Resolvers improve their odds of success just by being conscious of changing bad behaviors. Statistically by the end of January, 64% are hanging in there and 6 months later 44% are still at it.

10 Tips To Improve the Odds for Positive Change in 2015.

1. Make a realistic plan - You really can’t lose 25 lbs in one month.2. Believe in yourself - You CAN stop smoking and you really should

today. 3. Get support - There are plenty of others in your boat, no matter what

your resolution.4. Spell out the details - Do you eat out frequently? Have a plan for dealing

with choices and calories. There are web sites that break down every restaurant’s nutrition information.

5. Set mini goals - Ten minutes of daily exercise are better than none. You can’t become a marathon runner overnight.

6. Manage your cravings - This comes easier as you alter bad habits.7. Control your environment - Does watching football with friends equal

unhealthy food, drinks, or worse? Remember, you’re the boss of you! 8. Do the opposite of what you usually do - If you usually have coffee and

a morning cigarette first thing, try 15 minutes of gentle stretching before you make Java.

9. Reward yourself - You deserve it. 10. Most importantly, anticipate slips and deal with them constructively.

Don’t give up just because you slipped. Give yourself the grace to “do over”. God certainly does!
