Sunday Schoolby David Hollis

Our calling, directly from Jesus, is to make disciples. Being disciples and making them requires much more than coming to a worship service once a week, although, that's certainly a necessary component. Some of the most critical spiritual formation we do, takes place in small groups that meet together to study God's word, share God's work, and seek God's will and direction in the lives of fellow followers. At FUMC, there are several different kinds of these groups, but the most fundamental to our identity and mission is the Sunday School class. Lately, we have become aware of several concerns related to Sunday School - particularly a time crunch that makes learning and sharing in fellowship difficult. As a church, we must grapple

with these issues together and seek solutions that will keep us obedient to our calling. Above all, it must be clear that Sunday School classes are vital to the making of disciples, and we strive to do all we can to see these groups flourishing and fruitful. May God find us faithful to work together toward this task.

Leaders of classes or those who have ideas and a willingness to work through these issues are invited to the first Key Leader's meeting, Monday, February 7, 11:30 a.m. in Clayton Hall or the Church Council meeting, Monday, February 20 at 6:00 p.m..

Mission Notes

Stephen Ministry by Tharon Kirk

Over the weekend, Stephen Ministry began training a new

group of Stephen Ministers for our FUMC Stephen Ministry. We are excited to have new people preparing to join us.

New trainees include: David Cagle, Wes Clayton, David Eblen, David Hollis, Lisa Rice, Judy Smith, Marie Stephenson, Jenni Thorn, Melissa Van Pelt, and Stan Warren. Stephen Ministry training involves 50 hours of training, so

these folks will be preparing themselves over the next four months. We look forward to commissioning them as Stephen Ministers later in the year when they complete the training. When you see them, let them know how much you appreciate what they are doing.

The winter months can often be hard for many people. The colder weather and shorter days keep people indoors more and often contribute to a feeling of isolation. If you know someone who is experiencing some “winter blues,” you might suggest Stephen Ministry. We want to be there for persons who are going through difficult times. Please call the church, 422-4002, and ask to speak to someone about Stephen Ministry.

Getting Acquainted With Our Membersby Bobbie Mays

My first introduction to Lee Warren was through Women’s Ministries at Jackson FUMC. As participants in Invitation to Presence Bible Study and the Women’s Retreat at Victory Ranch, I captured a glimpse of who Lee is as a person of faith. Since then, I have come to appreciate Lee for her extensive background in the arts and more specifically as the Executive Director of the Jackson Symphony.

Her faith journey began as the daughter of a Southern Baptist minister. Born in Milledgeville, Georgia, she grew up in New York and New England, where her father served as a "home missionary" for the Southern Baptist Convention. Having heard the Bible being read, hymns being sung and stories of Jesus since she was old enough to remember, she came to know Jesus as her Saviour when she was quite young and was baptized by her dad at age 7. She has always been active in the church and has so enjoyed “coming to know my church family at First United Methodist Church over the past three years. We were struggling to find a church home when we came to Jackson. The first Sunday we visited, Pat and Jim Scott grabbed ahold of us and did not let go! We felt as if we had come home.” And soon, they became active members of the Genesis Sunday School class.

Lee has an extensive background and experience in non-profit arts administration. As a graduate of Emerson College in Boston with a major in Theatre and Education, she has served as Dean of the Aspen Music Festival and School, the Oklahoma Arts Institute as Managing and Artistic Director, the Fort Worth Symphony as Community

Engagement Manager, Executive Director of the Youth Orchestra of Greater Fort Worth, the first Executive Director of the Dixie Performing Arts Center in Huntingdon, TN and since July 2011, she has served as the Executive Director of the Jackson Symphony.

Marrying her high school sweetheart after college, she and her husband, Dr. Stanley Warren, spent many years in New York City. Stan is a voice teacher at Union University and a singer. They have one son, David, who attended Eastman School of Music

and is working on his Master’s degree in clarinet performance at Texas Christian University. Music is a way of life for the Warren family for which they enjoy sharing with others. Stan has two upcoming performances to which everyone is invited. The first is his faculty recital at Union University in Hartley Hall on Monday, February 20 at 7:30 p.m. He will also be performing as a soloist

in Bach’s B Minor Mass with the Music City Baroque Orchestra on March 25 at 3:00 p.m. at St. George’s Church in Nashville.

“Music is one of the ways we make sense of our lives; one of the ways through which we express our feelings when we have no words; to understand with our ears when we cannot with our minds.”

Lee’s excitement and enthusiasm for the future of the orchestra; providing music to a wide audience of all ages; for encouraging children to learn to play instrumental music; sing vocal music; having an appreciation for music, is contagious! Lee’s passion for growing deeper spiritually is also contagious.

Lee Warren
