Through a vision for the future, God’s love and charity for others and as an expression of thanks for God’s benevolence in their lives, the First United Methodist Church Foundation understands the “joy of giving.” Just ask Foundation Chair, Jim Scott (Scotty) and Vice Chair, Jim Barker.

In 1994, the Foundation was established with an initial gift of $50,000 from the estate of Mary H. Pope, the widow of W. Winfield Pope. Over the years, various other bequests and gifts have been received. In May 2012, an anonymous gift of $100,000 from an FUMC member was given. In the spring, the Foundation was the beneficiary of a $50,000 gift from the estate of Harrell Elliott. Harrell was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church from 1927 until his death in September 2011. Most recently, the Foundation was notified by a couple who live in Washington, D.C., of a $100,000 gift in their estate plan. This gift will be given in memory of his maternal grandparents who were members of FUMC until their deaths in the 1940s.

Gratified by the commitment of current and past members, Scotty credits the success of this Foundation to their loyal attendance and participation. Vice Chair, Jim Barker, CFA, has been instrumental in communicating to the members how the money is invested in compliance with the Board’s investment policy. Jim shared, “Having a sound investment policy that is structured and implemented in a responsible way is vital for the Foundation. A gift made in your estate planning builds upon itself…success breeds success.”

Since 1999, the Foundation has awarded college scholarships to fifty deserving students. As giving and growth increases, the Board will explore additional opportunities for using the annual income. Jim further explained that “if there are no restrictions on gifts, there is greater flexibility in directing the funds. Donations received do not go toward the operation of the church.”

WHO needs estate planning? Every adult who is legally competent, who owns anything and who cares about who receives it at the time of their disability or death.

The gifts you make in your estate plan continue to carry the love and grace of God across time. Consider how you, too, might make a lasting gift and leave a legacy for your Church.

Questions? Want to know more? Give Scotty a call, 668-4775.

Getting Better Acquainted With Our Membersby Bobbie Mays

Basketball and the Wesley Foundation campus ministry were two pivotal turning points for Kelly Carmichael and Chris Nye. Discover how they met, what their passions are and where their faith journeys have taken them today.

Kelly was born in Jackson, TN and grew up in this church as one of three daughters of FUMC members, Rita and Jimmy Carmichael. She remembers well participating in many church activities as a family. As an elementary kid, highlights for her were Mini-Fest, children’s choir and attending retreats and camps at Lakeshore United Methodist Assembly. Summer youth trips and musicals were both exciting and helpful in those formative years of faith development.

Having come from a sports minded family, with her mom still playing basketball and her dad still coaching swimming, it’s no wonder that she would excel in sports, too. While in high school, through a “messed up knee” from playing basketball, Kelly had to have physical therapy. It was that experience that later led to her goal of becoming a physical therapist. Kelly is now in her 13th year as a PT working at the Therapy and Learning Center in Jackson.

Chris spent his early years in Hendersonville and Goodlettsville, TN. He and his three sisters were also raised in a United Methodist church. Through the 7th grade, he and his family attended City Road UMC in Madison, TN. Chris’ dad, a church leader, played an important part of shaping Chris’ Christian life.

In 1994, Kelly and Chris were both students at Tennessee Tech in Cookeville, TN. Their paths hadn’t crossed until in March. Kelly had eyed Chris on one particular evening while at the Wesley Foundation Campus Ministry. “He was the best looking guy I had ever seen and “I was not going to miss an opportunity to meet him!” It was intramural basketball season. Knowing that Chris played basketball and that she didn’t have to play her own basketball game that night in late February, Kelly could hardly wait to “cheer

on” the Wesley team! Two weeks later, they saw each other at the Girls State Tournament. There, they learned that both his family and hers annually attended these tournament games. So, Chris came over and sat with Kelly and her family…the rest is history!

They were married in June of 1999 following Kelly’s graduation from PT school at UT Memphis. With a passion for education and for working with young people, Chris’ college career path led him to change his major from engineering to teaching. For seven years, he has been a teacher at Liberty. While there, he also coached the track team. Aspiring to further his educational career, Chris entered graduate school in 2005. While teaching in the daytime, he attended Union University at night, taking evening classes twice a week plus classes all day on Saturdays. In August of 2006, he received a Master of Education. The following year, when Mary Kinsley was born, Chris took a year off from furthering his education but continued to teach. In the summer of 2008, he began a three-year doctorate program at Union graduating in December of 2011, with his Doctorate of Education.

With church playing such an important role in both their families early on in life, their commitment and involvement today continues both as a couple, as parents and as dedicated FUMC members. In 2002, Kelly served as a lay delegate to the Annual Conference. She is currently on the Nominations Committee (her 2nd term), Chairman of the Children’s Council, and in her sixth year as a 2nd grade Sunday School teacher. Already, Kelly is planning goals for next year with her 2nd grade class having a mission focus each month that allows the kids to experience what it really means to serve others.

While in college through the Wesley Foundation, Chris participated in Disciple classes and enjoyed choir tours. Currently at FUMC in the 9 a.m. Sunday worship service, Chris sings as one of the members of the First Awakening team. He also serves on the Prayer Ministry team and he is an active member of the Followers Sunday School Class. In past years, among other activities, he has helped lead the Stewardship campaign. And, yes, he’s even been known to play some basketball at church on Monday nights!

A few of Kelly’s hobbies are reading, running and scrapbooking while Chris’ interests are gardening, landscaping, and coaching. With their beaming smiles, simultaneously, they added “and being the fan of our kids!” Enjoying many of the same activities their parents did growing up in the church, “not falling far from the apple tree,” are their children, Meredith (age 9) Braden (age 7) and Mary Kinsley (age 5.) As parents of three young children, Chris and Kelly like that FUMC offers programming for children and adults that are beneficial to them as a family. Sunday School, WEF (Wednesday Evening Fellowship) and Sunday worship is such a natural part of their lives! They remember when this church went through a period of renovation, adding an educational wing in 2002. Chris recalls “how much thought went into the planning and design of the new facility.” Now, they are watching their own kids learn and grow in the awesome Children’s Area on the 2nd floor.

Kelly and Chris feel so strongly about the importance of “exposing your kids as often as possible to Jesus.” When asked what their hope is for the future of FUMC, Chris remarked, “to continue to focus on facilitating an environment for involvement of lay leadership.” Their desire and commitment to carry out God’s purpose, study God’s Word, participate in activities at FUMC, and to accept the call when asked to be leaders, are some of the very values instilled in them early on through each of their families. Kelly’s favorite scripture, Jeremiah 29:11-13 speaks to their hearts, “When you call on me, when you come and pray to me, I’ll listen. When you come looking for me, you’ll find me. Yes, when you get serious about finding me and want it more than anything else, I’ll make sure you won’t be disappointed.” God’s Decree.
