Small Group Survey Results

Below are the results from cards submitted at the beginning of the year about small group ministry at FUMC. Included are some observations gleaned from the comments given on the cards. May this information continue to guide our mission of Seeking God, Knowing Christ, and Sharing His Love together as a growing church.

1. One of the overwhelming responses was a request that groups at church help one another better balance the demands of life. There have been several studies offered recently that address this topic, however we can certainly devote more attention to questions such as these with group formation moving forward. Specific groups such as one for people with parents facing transititions have existed and should be a continued focus. Our identification of gifts and training of leaders will seek to address this request.

2. The two best times by far for people to meet were Sunday morning and Wednesday evening. It seems unlikely that adding more groups at other times will flourish, at least currently, however we must seek to reach those who were not surveyed on Sunday morning - and for them other times might be more convenient.

3. The largest group interested in potentially forming a new group is in the 36-55 age range. Conversations have already begun with representatives and leaders from this group to form a new Sunday School class.

4. Many of the comments requested groups or opportunities that are currently offered at FUMC. This is a blessing because it shows we are well equipped to meet current challenges. However, it challenges us to make sure we are ALL doing our part to learn as much as we can about what is offered at FUMC so that we can share opportunities with new members and those who do not have a church home. We also must explore whether the time/location of current groups makes them harder to attend.

5. Several responded that FUMC has not started many new groups lately and that we should begin "a new day" or launching many more groups. This will require constant identifcation of leaders and their gifts, training and support, and "deployment" to lead ministries.

Responses from cards:

Getting Better Acquainted With Our Members

by Bobbie Mays Director of Communications

The third of four boys, John Edwin Yarbrough was born at Jackson Madison County General Hospital in 1950 to Herron and Lurlyne Meeks Yarbrough. His great-grandfather, J.D. Johnson was the Mayor of Jackson from 1919-1923 and Commissioner from 1927-35. Both sets of his grandparents were members of Jackson First United Methodist Church, so naturally he grew up in this church, too. He chuckles when thinking about where family members preferred sitting in the sanctuary. One grandmother, Elma Johnson Meeks sat on the right side while the other, Alma Herron Yarbrough sat on the left. John sat in the balcony. Everyone had their “section and pew!”

When John was four, his family moved to theYarbrough farm in the country, where today, all of the brothers and their families reside in their own homes on the family farm. When John was thirteen, his father died. Reflecting on this time in his life, he remembers being so close to his mother. To this day, he admires, loves and appreciates her so much for all that she did to raise the four boys by herself, returning to work to provide and care for them. Church was an important part of their life and one person

whom he especially looked up to was his ninth grade Sunday School teacher, Conrad Smith, the father of Larry Smith. John attended Northside High School and enjoyed playing basketball from his sophomore through senior years. After high school, he enrolled at Lambuth University graduating in 1972 with a BS in Chemistry and Biology. Desiring to become a physical therapist, he applied to and was accepted at the Physical Therapy School, University of TN-Memphis. Following his graduation in December of 1973, he was immediately hired and began working at Jackson Madison County General Hospital.

John stayed busy between his work, family, church, and activities, but in 1974 his attention turned to this attractive girl he noticed walking in downtown Jackson while he was picking up his sister-in-law from her downtown office. John asked his sister-in-law when she got in the car if she knew who that girl was. “Oh, yes! That’s Carolyn Brown. She works for Moss, Benton and Wallis law firm and is just the sweetest girl ever!” Within the week, the two met on a blind date where they attended the UT vs. Ole Miss football game. John never did say who won the game… but we know who won his heart! Two years later, in 1976, they were married in the original chapel of Jackson First United Methodist Church by Reverend Jack Henton.

Arnold and Louise Huggins Brown are the parents of Carolyn and her older brother, Terry, who were both born and raised in Selmer, TN. Carolyn and her family attended Union Grove Methodist Church until she was eight years old, when she was invited to play the piano for a small Baptist church with a membership of 30-35. It was near revival time and they didn’t have a pianist, so some of the members asked her to play at the services -- she was only eight! Soon Carolyn became their weekly pianist (she laughs saying she played the only four songs she knew). She also took voice lessons and not only played the piano but sang at weddings and other church events. Carolyn joined the Pleasant Site Baptist Church at age nine. Her fondest memory was when at the end of the revival, they took her shopping to buy her a beautiful new dress with a matching purse and shoes.

followup appointment. There were no signs of cancer.

Today, John celebrates five years of being cancer-free. Describing this experience, from the very outset, while uncertain of his future, John was very open about his diagnosis. He had known others either as rehab clients or friends who had dealt with cancer whose courage and faith had inspired him. Sharing the news with his Sunday School class and friends, he openly talked about his medical condition. As the class President while making announcements and offering prayer concerns for others, John told the class, that whatever the outcome, he felt God’s presence and comfort. He and Carolyn will always remember the support they felt, as they were surrounded by the love and prayers of so many from this church, who not only helped them get through this ordeal but become stronger because of it.

John retired in the summer of 2011 as the Executive Director of the West TN Rehabilitation Center. Little did he know when he first began working, that he would remain at the same hospital for the next thirty-six years. On Saturday, April 13, 2013, John was inducted into the Tennessee Physical Therapy Hall of Fame in Nashville for his many years of service. John said he retired, but don’t be surprised if you see

Following graduation in 1967 from Selmer High School, Carolyn already had a job. At age sixteen, her father encouraged her to enroll her in Beauty School. She worked as a beautician for a while but knew that was something she did not want for a career. Using her skills from her high school typing and shorthand classes, she began working as a legal secretary as a court reporter with an attorney in Selmer where she stayed for ten years. Through her legal work, she met attorneys from other areas and wanting to move to Jackson, was hired by John Moss, and began working for the firm of Moss, Benton and Wallis.

During this time, John and Carolyn started their family with Patrick being born in 1977 and Julie in 1979.. As the children got older and involved in more school activities as well as competitive tennis, Carolyn quit her job after seven years. This period of their life took the family all over the United States traveling from Tennessee as far north as Michigan and to all southern states as far as Florida while Patrick and Julie played in tennis tournaments. It was a fun, challenging and busy time for all, juggling so many schedules.

In 1991, Carolyn re-entered the workplace and began working at Jackson-Madison County Schools as the Vocational/Technical Secretary, where she was employed for seventeen years until her retirement in 2008. In January, that same year, the world that John and Carolyn knew, too quickly became one that turned theirs upside down. John was diagnosed with peripheral T-cell lymphoma, a very rare and aggressive form of cancer in his neck region. Completely shocked when he learned of the diagnosis, he and Carolyn asked themselves, “What do we do now?” Knowing this was something that had to be dealt with immediately, they relied on their doctors, prayer, family and friends to work through this difficult, challenging time. Within two days of the diagnosis from his doctors in Jackson, he had an appointment with an oncologist at Vanderbilt, who was recognized nationally for his work with this type of cancer. Chemo was begun and fortunately could be administered in Jackson. For the next four months, John regularly received treatments and in April he returned to Vanderbilt for a

him at Jackson Madison County General Hospital...he continues to work some each month at the hospital!

The Yarbroughs have enjoyed wonderful careers and at the same time they have served in many ministries as members of FUMC. Together, in the early 1980’s, they taught 4th grade Sunday School. They have been longtime and active members of the Family Life Forum Sunday School class and both have served on, and continue to be active in, a variety of committees. Carolyn has especially enjoyed serving these past three years on the Altar Guild and more recently on the Special Events team. John and Carolyn, both, have discovered that Wednesday Evening Bible studies and classes have definitely deepened their understanding of the Bible, God and their faith. Sharing how much they appreciate the way the church is so mission-oriented, this Spring, they have enjoyed participating in the Habitat House project. So far, John has helped with construction on three Saturdays while Carolyn has helped feed the workers. Two favorite studies for John have been the Tuesday morning Men’s Bible Study and a recent Wednesday Evening class, “Fathered by God, Another highlight has been his participation for two days last October at the Leadership Institute at the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Kansas City led by Pastor Adam Hamilton who has authored many books which FUMC has offered as studies.

Spending time with their five grandchildren, Jake, 9, Seth,7, Maddox, 4, Bailey, 12 and Noel, 8, adds to their enjoyment of being retired. And, as sports enthusiasts, they continue to follow the UT Men’s and Women’s basketball teams, the Grizzlies and the St. Louis Cardinals. Other interests are travelling, (especially cruises) and flower gardening. Realizing he has been given a second chance at life, John and Carolyn both feel God is leading them to do more for others. As the 2012 Chairman of the Capital Improvements and Annual Giving effort, John offered his reasons for supporting this church. Together, they continue to strive “to further our vision to reach people for Christ - to “make disciples” and to embrace the vision and ministry of FUMC” John, Carolyn, and grandchildren

Health Tips Wanda Scanlon, FUMC Health and Welfare RepresentativeRN, Regional Hospital of Jackson

Hey Baby, Can You Mingle if You Got a Shingle? No, these aren’t the lyrics to a bad rap song we are hearing a lot about in the media on Shingles. Exactly what is this mysterious disease and “is it catching?”The answer lies with the Chicken Pox virus (varicella zoster). After you recover from the chicken pox, the virus sleeps within your nerve roots. Hopefully, it will snooze forever, but sometimes it “wakes up”, and rears its ugly head. The symptoms happen in stages. At first you may have a headache, flu symptoms but no fever, or be sensitive to light. A rash usually appears as a band or strip on one side of the body. Later, it may itch, burn, and turn into a cluster of blisters that fill with fluid that may crust and peel

(just like the pesky Pox). This takes 2 to 4 weeks. The pain can be from mild to excruciating, sometimes lasting for months. To further complicate things, some folks have pain but no rash and there is such an animal as internal shingles. This myriad of symptoms makes diagnosis difficult for practitioners. You MUST have had chickenpox to get shingles; they are NOT contagious –but there is a small chance a person with the shingles can spread the virus ONLY to another person who hasn’t had chicken pox or the childhood vaccine. Most patients get well and never have them again. Triggers for shingles include having a weakened immune system from another disease (like cancer, HIV) and stress or trauma (mental or physical such as a major surgery). The GOOD NEWS is there are treatments; antiviral and pain medications, and a vaccine. If you are over 50, talk to your MD during your next physical to see if you are at risk and need to be vaccinated.
