September 2015 Dear Parents, Welcome to kindergarten! Our names are Jamie Kwon and Samantha Gabrielli. We are very excited to be your child’s kindergarten teachers this year! Kindergarten will be a year full of many new adventures and learning experiences. The kindergarten year is a huge step for both you and your child. We hope we can make it a happy and successful experience. This year your child will be learning many new skills such as how to decode and write three-sound words (CVC), how to print their first and last names, how to write simple narrative stories, letters and all-about books, how to count and compare groups of objects up to 10, how to compare 3d and 2d shapes, and much more! We will be spending a lot of time learning to work and play together in a considerate way. You may hear about the community jar, which will help children with the caring and sharing rules of the classroom. We will be reading many books this year to help your child understand the many concepts that we teach. And, of course, we will read for fun and learn about the joy of reading! Both kindergarten classes (K-213 and K-210) will do many activities together. We use flexible grouping, so your child will be working with all three kindergarten teachers, and will be regularly interacting with all kindergarteners. A typical day in our classroom will look like this: 8:15-8:25 Arrival, unpack and Welcome Work 8:30-9:00 Fundations grouped by ability: handwriting, letter and sound identification, sight word practice, reading comprehension, phoneme manipulation activities 9:00-9:10 Morning Meeting: Morning message, attendance, class discussion, calendar, counting days of school, daily schedule 9:10-9:55 Literacy Block: Star name, word work, shared reading, shared writing, reading and writing workshop, read aloud 9:55-10:45 Special
