Saint Mary Parish Stewarding God’s Blessings

Campaign Office: (847) 864-0333 ext. 202 ~ Email: Mariama Holman, [email protected]

“I have pledged because I love Saint Mary’s. Saint Mary’s is a blessing in my life since they welcomed me in over 30 years ago. I had at-

tended different parishes, but I never felt I belonged. All our blessings come to us from God. I feel that being a Saint Mary parishioner is a very special blessing. So why not thank God for membership in this wonderful parish by pledging/donating what we can to “Saint Mary Stewarding God’s Blessings.” Your support for this

project is essential to prevent further deteriation of our aging buildings and parking lot. This campus is our inheritance. We must take care of it now

and preserve it for the next generations.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

We are steadily advancing towards our goal of $1.25M in pledges and our hearts rejoice with what we have accomplished thus far. As King David exclaimed as he fundraised for the temple of the Lord in 1 Co-rinthians 29:14, “But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand.” According to the words of King David, God knows the innermost contents of our hearts, and seeks integrity in howev-er we choose to return a portion of our many blessings to Him, “I know, my God, that you put hearts to the test and that you take pleasure in integrity. With a whole heart I have willingly given all these things, and now with joy I have seen your people here present also giving to you generously” (1 Corinthians 29:17). How do we obtain integrity as a body of Christ? We reflect over God’s word. We pontificate and ask questions on His truth in our lives so we may obtain clarity and unity as fellow Brothers and Sisters in Christ. We then act, based on His will, and not our own. I implore you to search your hearts in prayer on how God intends to use you to bless others – to engage your many gifts at your job, in your family, at your school – and most definitely here at Saint Mary Parish.

I invite you all to attend one of our upcoming information sessions on Wednesday May 15th at 6PM and Sunday, May 19th at 12:15PM. Ask questions on the critical needs we have at our church for a new parking lot, repaired Children’s Center windows and fund for completing long-term maintenance at our historic, 150-year old campus. Receive answers to guide your judgement. However you decide to contribute, I ask that you have taken the time to pray and make a decision with integrity so that you may have the joy in your heart that comes from discerning and following God’s will for your life.

Commitment Weekend is June 8th -9th. This is the last day to contribute to the campaign. Please come to Mass ready to stand, and make your campaign decision with integrity.

Gratefully yours in Christ, Father Kevin

REFLECTION: RELATIONSHIP, BETWEEN SHEPHERD & FLOCK FATHER KEVIN MCCRAY, PASTOR

In the first reading, we hear about the missionary journey of Paul and Barnabas — we hear how they go to preach to the Jews, but once rejected, they start evangelizing to the Gentiles. Throughout the readings we come to recognize what is needed to both become a faithful believer and then to move out to proclaiming that faith to others in our lives. Our relationship with the Good Shepherd is based on three aspects that lead us to closer and life-giving love. We are called to listen, to recognize that God knows us, and to follow Jesus in all of his ways. These would have been the lessons taught by shepherd to sheep. As a lamb, especially one that would stray and put itself and others at risk by leaving the safety of the fold, the shepherd would often have to break its front legs. In the time that it would take to heal, the shepherd would have to carry that lamb around his neck on his shoulders. During those weeks of healing, the shepherd would talk and care for the sheep while it was in this dependent stage. Over time the sheep would come to know the voice of his shepherd, and the shepherd would come to know the voice of his sheep. Once healed, the lamb would be put back into the flock. Going forward the relationship is stronger, and they know each other. In times of danger, when the shepherd calls out a warning, the sheep is able to that hear that voice and follow; when the lamb is in trouble and bleats his distress, the shepherd is able to hear, respond, and save it. And that is what we are being challenged to understand today. We are to grow in hearing and knowing the voice of Jesus in our lives so that we can be open to following his ways. But we know it isn’t always easy to hear the voice of the shepherd in a world that is filled with competing voices, opinions, and beliefs. We can fail to hear the voice of Jesus who calls us to love and forgive. We can fail to really come to know God who wants only to save us so we spend eternity with him. We can fail to follow the one who died for us, who conquered sin and death, so that we may be free from the snares that entangle us and keep us from growing to be the best version of ourselves — “to be perfect as the Father is perfect.” Today’s readings give us a concise path to happiness: listen to God; know God and that he loves us to death; and follow him by living and preaching the Good News each and every day to the people God puts into our lives. By doing so we will be like Paul and Barnabas — who stayed close to God; who heard the voice of Jesus and were converted, and who were able to recognize when God called them to a new mission, to a new people. They followed God’s will in their lives regardless of where it led them and who came into their lives. God is calling us to a joyful collaboration! As we celebrate Mother’s Day, recognize the women who shepherded us through our lives, who kept us safe and secure, and who loved without reserve or condition, let us say a prayer of thanksgiving as they taught us to listen, to know, and to follow to better ways of life. Regardless whether they hold the title of Mother, Grandmother, Aunt, Sister, Teacher, Neighbor, or Friend, praise God for the lessons these women taught and the love they bestowed on you. Whether you visit their grave, call them on the phone, email them, or send a greeting card, please let them know the difference they have made in your life, and the many ways they have helped you to follow Jesus.

In today’s readings we recognize similar images, themes and challenges. On this Fourth Sunday of Easter, we hear the proclamation of the Good Shepherd. Jesus says, “My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” Jesus goes on to tell us that we are in the palm of his hand, and that both he and the Father will lead and protect their flock — even unto death.

In our urban reality, it can be hard to grasp some of the lessons from today’s read-ings. We are not an agricultural community that would pick up on some of the rural context---and the relationships that are formed between shepherd and flock. Other parts of the world still raise animals this way and are more likely to understand.
