As part of the one body of Christ we welcome all to the Lord’s Table as God has welcomed us.” FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH, OWENSBORO (Disciples of Christ) THE CALLER No. 3 Vol. 14 ~ February 6, 2018 From the Preacherman…. The season of Lent draws near, and with it, opportunities to quiet the soul and see where God is at work in our world. I did not grow up with the discipline of this, or any, season of the Christian year. We did Christmas and Easter and that was it. Not seasons, but days mattered. Lent is ancient and odd and unusual, perfect for us and different from anything else we can imagine. This is the season that reminds us how much we lack in understanding and behavior, and how far God is willing to go to cross that chasm and reach us. I love Lent. The season starts on Ash Wednesday, February 14, and continues all the way up to Saturday, March 31. It lasts for 40 days, plus the 6 Sundays of each week. 40 is a rich number in biblical stories, with all kinds of implications. Each Sunday is a “little Easter” celebrated in worship and prayer. This year we are in the central part of Mark, chapters 8, 9 and 10, for sermons in worship on Sundays. In our newsletter, you will read about other opportunities for worship on Tuesdays at DWM Lenten Devotionals and Salad Luncheons at our church and Wednesdays at sister churches in our community. Opportunities abound. Come and see what God is up to in our midst. The question often arises “What are you doing, or not doing, for Lent?” Perhaps you are giving up or sacrificing something, and that is commendable. One of my daughters gave up television one year for Lent, just so she could have more space in her life to hear God. However, the parameters for Lenten discipline have grown much wider. People still give up things, but sometimes they add a discipline or practice for the season. I have a friend in another church who for Lent one year wrote 40 letters of gratitude to people who had blessed him in his life. It took some thought and effort, but he followed that practice for the entire season and it changed him, which is the essence of Lent, isn’t it? To change from our normal, accustomed ways, to the way of God in this world. The most important thing to do, however, is this: start. Just start. Wherever you are, whatever your struggles or problems might be, just start. On the first Sunday in Lent the Worship Committee will offer you a simple, small stone to carry for the season. A rock for your pocket to remind you of all of the difficulty in being a disciple of Christ, and the hope that we have in the One who calls us. Come and see what God is doing in this place. It is odd, but wonderful. Peace….Chris

    CALLER No. 3 Vol. 14 ~ February 6, 2018

From the Preacherman…. The season of Lent draws near, and with it, opportunities to quiet

the soul and see where God is at work in our world.

First Christian Church has always been a partner church and we would like to see this partnership continue through a commitment of financial resources and manpower. The Legacy fund will donate $1,000 and the Outreach Committee challenges our congregation to match that pledge. Please make donations payable to FCC and write Apostles Build in the memo section. Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain.
