VBS began Sunday, July 24. We have combined forces again with the United Methodist Church of Bonner Springs, St. Martin in the Fields (Edwardsville), Edwardsville Christian Church and the Edwardsville United Methodist Church.

As of this writing, we have just completed day 2 of our Vacation Bible School. The kids are traveling back in time and meeting with Mary and Eunice each day at Mary’s house. The focus is learning about Jesus growing up in Nazareth. Other activities include the Celebration time, where everyone gets to sing fun songs, fun and games, which speaks for itself, the Marketplace where the kids are baking fried bread, eating snacks, and doing fun crafts and their tribe time, where they get to go further with the lessons of the day. So far, we are ministering to around 50 kids. A HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who has given of themselves to make this a great week. It does take a community to grow our kids!

Marcia, Tim, and Twila were hosts for the July 2 potluck meeting of the BEAS (Bonner Edwardsville Area Singles). Patriotic placemats and flags decorated the tables and accommodated a plentiful potluck. Bertha Cameron was our guest for dinner and gave a presentation on the history of the Monticello Community. She had several artifacts and a painting of the town-site by Charles Goslin. Wild Bill Hickok was marshal of Monticello at one time. Mrs. Cameron also participated in a question and answer session after her talk.

July 16 we again met Mrs. Cameron at Monticello Museum. She made the initial presentation in the air conditioned office because the remainder of the museum is in the old fire station which has no AC. We hope to return in cooler weather. We did learn that Mrs. Cameron is a member of the Shawnee Indians and a fellow “Cemetery Trouper.” We followed with lunch at Ruby Tuesdays.

Mary, Dorothy, Darlene, and Frank are hosts for our August 6 potluck/business meeting and are planning a picnic theme.

If you've paid attention to the news about Joplin you've heard reports of the number of homes and businesses destroyed or damaged by the May 22nd tornado. You've heard the number of people injured and killed. Here are some other numbers that are impressive.

The governor set a goal that by August 17 (the start of the school year) we would see one volunteer in Joplin for every resident - that's over 45,000 people. That goal was set over three weeks ago and at that time over 19,000 volunteers had already come to Joplin. If you added all the volunteer hours together you would see that in the first four weeks after the tornado 19 years worth of volunteer work had been done here.

Although we don't have an exact number of Disciples volunteers that have been to Joplin, just this weekend we had Disciples from Arkansas, Nebraska, Texas and around Missouri. In the coming month we have groups from Iowa, Kansas, Oklahoma and Minnesota scheduled to come. I can't even begin to name the many other places that volunteers have come from in the last five weeks. The numbers make us overwhelmingly grateful. And they also speak to the vast devastation. Even with the high amounts of volunteers, there is still so much work to be done that will happen over weeks and months and years to come.

All information and quotations have been taken from the Program and Business Docket of the 2011 General Assembly and from the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) website. Most of the other Items of Business were Reports. If you would like to read any Reports, please let me know.

No. 1116 Addressing Anti-Muslim Action in the United States and Canada This resolution calls “upon the Church to promote respect, civility and love toward our Muslim neighbors…” and “interfaith dialogue and action so that mutual regard and understanding between Muslims and Christians will be deepened.”

No. 1117 A Call for Reflection and Advocacy on Behalf of the Democratic Republic of Congo This resolution calls for the Church to “pray, reflect, educate and advocate for our sisters and brothers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.” Also, it calls for “more ethical mining practices.” The resolution further calls us to purchase products “labeled „DRC conflict free‟ when purchasing electronic products.”

No. 1118 Celebrate and Reaffirm Our Commitment to the Vision of Planting New Mission Since 2009, we have “welcomed 88 new and affiliating congregations.” We will continue to plant new churches and support the work of those who do.

No. 1119 Moral Injury and Spiritual Care in A Time of War This is an item for Reflection and Research.

No. 1120 Human Trafficking This resolution calls for the Church to “engage in education about the issue of trafficking in persons in our own communities and around the world, and in advocacy efforts to end this criminal and abusive practice.” It also calls for us to “advocate for the ongoing fundraising and strengthening of the U.S. Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000 and to advocate and support the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act of 2001 in Canada.”

No. 1121 Justice in Education Reform This resolution “affirms that education reform must be approached in a way that deals with the justice issues of race, class, special needs, and geographical/residential location in relation to the more equitable distribution of resource opportunities.” Also, it calls us to be “in prayerful reflection, study, and public conversation about public education, including charter schools, through the lens of these justice concerns. We are also encouraged to “contact policy-makers and advocate for an approach to public education reform that is just and equitable, and that will continue to provide a quality education to all our children, regardless of race, class, special needs or geographical/residential location.”

No. 1122 Preventing Sexual Abuse and Ministering to Its Victims and Survivors We are called to “nurture the spiritual wholeness of victims and survivors of sexual abuse and provide avenues of healing and reconciliation.” The resolution affirms that “each situation requires individualized care and response.” And, further, the resolution encourages churches to have a safety policy, require background checks for staff and boundary training, to offer care and education.

No. 1123 Support of Children and Youth By Opposing Bullying in Schools, The Church and The Community This resolution calls bullying “sinful and harmful.” It calls our congregations to education, learning more about and identifying bullying within our community, our churches, and our camp program. It affirms that all people, no matter what ethnic, cultural, class, race, weight, mental and physical ability…..all people have the right to know the unconditional acceptance of God‟s love.

No. 1125 Report of the General Assembly Committee- Time and Place The 2013 General Assembly will be held in Orlando, Florida. The 2015 General Assembly will be held in Columbus, Ohio, July 19-23.
