FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH

Prayer of the Day: “Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love; for it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; it is in dying to self that we are born to eternal life. Amen!

Light of the world by darkness slain.

LEARNING FOR LIFE – SUNDAYS, 9:30-10:30 A.M.

Spiritual Disciplines: Creating Space for God Facilitator: Ron Phillips Today - May 29, 9:30-10:30 a.m.

Spiritual disciplines are intentional practices that serve as a means or a channel for God’s grace to flow into our lives. They put us in a place where God can more easily deal with us. They are not ends in themselves, but a means to an end, that of experiencing a life-changing relationship with God.

In this class we will take a fresh look at familiar disciplines like prayer and Scripture reading, and at less familiar disciplines like simplicity, silence, service, and spiritual friendship.

If you feel an ache to know Christ more deeply, or wish to have a desire for Christ awakened, or simply feel a little ‘stale’ in your walk with Christ, come. These ancient time-tested practices will carve out a path for a steady walk with the Triune God, if you dare walk it.

Each class will be relatively independent of the previous classes, so come even if you must miss some weeks. A deeper relationship with God and with His people awaits.

“Why Not Women?” By Loren Cunningham & David Joel Hamilton Facilitators: Colin Carbno & Marilyn Phillips Today - May 15, 9:30-10:30 a.m.

Join this study into why women should be empowered for ministry. Last week, one thing we looked at was: Romans 16:1-2: I commend unto you Phoebe our sister, who is a servant of the church that is at Cenchreae that ye receive her in the Lord, worthily of the saints and that ye assist her in whatsoever matter she may have need of you: for she herself also hath been a helper of many and of mine own self. (ASV)

When Phoebe is called a “servant”, the Greek term is actually, “diakonos” which is translated almost everywhere else in NT as “minister”. In case there is any doubt of her leadership status in verse two when Phoebe is called “helper”, the Greek term is the female form of “prostatis” which is the title that Josephus the Jewish Historian used some twenty times in his writing to describe Caesar. In short , prostatis is a term to designate a powerful and dynamic leader.
