HEROESof HOLLYWOOD HistoryHollywood’s former Women of Distinction Awards wereestablished in 1993 by the Board of Directors of the HollywoodChamber of Commerce to salute the women in our community.Although it is important to honor these remarkable women, theWomen of Distinction Awards have now evolved into the Heroesof Hollywood Awards, in which we will honor both male andfemale individuals, businesses and organizations, as well. This isa pivotal event where the voters decided on what makes thisperson or company a true Hero of Hollywood. The awardsceremony serves as one of two major fundraisers for theHollywood Chamber of Commerce Community Foundation, a501(c)3 organization dedicated to improving the lives ofHollywood community members. All proceeds raised from thisluncheon will be awarded in the form of grants to local charitableorganizations. “Heroes of Hollywood” Awards Committee iscomprised of members of the Hollywood Chamber who arevolunteers and have proven to be community leaders themselves.

The Mary Pickford Award As America’s first international film star, Mary Pickford was alsoa founding member of the creative community we callHollywood. Mary Pickford occupied a unique position as the firstlady of film, and America’s Sweetheart, while forging ahead asa philanthropist and paving the way for other actresses andbusinesswomen. You know her from tons of exposure on TV, and on comedy’sprime stages: host of Oxygen TV’s “I’ve Got a Secret,” CNBC’s“Equal Time,” and frequent guest on CNN’s “Larry King Live”and “Reliable Sources,” “The Joy Behar Show,” as well as “TheEd Show” and others on MSNBC.

Stephanie comes to the left, from the right. She’s the daughterof William Miller, Barry Goldwater’s 1964 Republicanpresidential running mate.

Carol ChanningHonoree, Mary Pickford Award

Since her Broadway debut in Blitzsteins’ For An Answer and aTime Magazine cover story, which hailed her performance asLorelei in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Carol Channing has beena star of international acclaim. Her Broadway appearances in-clude some of the most memorable characters in theatrical his-tory, winning three Tony Awards® including one for herlegendary portrayal of Dolly Levi in Jerry Herman’s Hello, Dolly!as well as one for Lifetime Achievement.

Carol’s career has been varied and continuing. During her firstfilm role in The First Traveling Saleslady starring opposite Gin-ger Rogers, she gave newcomer Clint Eastwood his first onscreen kiss. Among her numerous TV and Film successes wasthe madcap Muzzy in Thoroughly Modern Millie, which earnedher an Oscar nomination and won a Golden Globe Award.

In 2008, Carol was inducted into the Smithsonian Institute inD.C., along with eight other legendary ladies of stage and screen.She still performs with the gusto of a young aspiring actress andhas recently committed her life to bringing a refocus on the Artsto the public educational system, through the Dr. Carol Chan-ning/Harry Kullijian Foundation for the Arts (ChanningArts.org).

Carol offers lectures and performances, hoping to engage thepublic’s support for education in the Arts while also creatingscholarships. To date, the foundation produced an Emmy nomi-nated PSA and supported a resolution authored by Rep JackieSpeire, which passed the House and the Senate in Dec, 2010.In 2011, noted director Dori Berinstein will release a documen-tary about the icon entitled “Carol Channing: Larger Than Life.”

Folb Family TrustHeroes of Hollywood

The Folb family has been involved in the Hollywood communityfor more than half a century establishing themselves at the fore-front of endless events, projects and fundraisers to help thecommunity develop, thrive and continue to grow.

In 1960, Stanley Folb forever changed the Hollywood skyline withthe development of the 6515, 6464 and 6565 Sunset buildingsand the 1800 N. Highland Tower. Later, his sons Brian and Bradtook over the helm of the family business with Paramount Con-tracts & Developers. The Folb Family became the front-runnersin “green” technology improving building efficiency in Hollywoodwhile reducing the overall environmental impact. They were givenawards for their highest energy efficiency building by LADWP.

Recently, Brad has been involved with initiating The Sunset &Vine Business Improvement District, which now spans 15 blocksalong Sunset Boulevard and provides the surrounding area withthe top security, street cleaning, streetscape beautification andhomeless outreach services within the community.

Brian currently serves as the Vice President of The Sunset &Vine BID. He has been involved with the Hollywood Chamberfor the last 20 years and is currently serving his second term onthe Board of Directors. Brian is also on the Board of Directorsfor the Hollywood Central Park, Hollywood Historic Trust andHollywood Police Activities League.

The Folb family continues to impact workplace and neighbor-hood by encouraging and influencing a new generation of lead-ers and business owners around Hollywood.

Homer AlbaHero of Hollywood

As the Senior Vice President for Hollywood Forever Cemetery,Homer Alba has had the opportunity to have worked as eithera member of the Board of Directors and/or in a fundraising com-mittee with Paramount Studios, Hollywood Chamber, HollywoodBeautification Team, L.A. County District Attorney’s office,LACER Afterschool Programs, the Daughters of the AmericanRevolution, and more. He served as a former President of theL.A. County Funeral Directors Association and was later electedto the State Board (CFDA), which he served for two years.

Born and raised in Harlingen, Texas, Homer graduated in the topten of his class and was very involved in the political arena as anactive member of the South Texas Young Democrats; Yellow DogDemocrats! In college years at the University of Texas, he remainedactive in politics. In junior year, he was voted “Most Popular Boy.”In senior year, he was elected as Student Body President. He grad-uated with B.A. in English Literature with a minor in Political Sci-ence. After college, his Congressman appointed him to the JuniorDiplomatic Corp and Homer went on to Washington D.C. Sixtydays later, he found himself in “boot camp.” He completed a one-year tour of duty in Vietnam: Quang Tri Province, with Headquar-ters Company, 1st Brigade, 5th Infantry Division (Mechanized Unit).He was assigned to “clerk” for Brigadier General John G. Hill Jr.

Homer returned to Austin, Texas to receive a second B.A. in Span-ish American Literature. He transferred to UCLA where he re-ceived his M.A. in Spanish American Studies. Traveling is veryspecial to Homer. He has visited London, Madrid, Amsterdam,Paris, Geneva, Frankfurt, Barcelona, Granada, Milan, Venice,Florence, Rome, Athens, Mikonos, Cairo, and Israel.

Kaneisha NorthernHero of Hollywood

Raised in Hollywood, Kaneisha came from a single parent and lowincome household which taught her to be compassionate aboutreaching out to others. She founded Grad Girls Network, anonprofit organization that shapes girls into confident andproductive high school graduates who inspire their fellow peers tofinish school and lead productive lives. The organization reacheshigh school girls in Hollywood and its efforts are primarily directedto reach students in underserved areas throughout Los Angeles.

Grad Girls Network provides girls with resources andopportunities to positively influence their futures and the futuresof their fellow peers. Over 75 percent of the girls who we servereported having at least one parent who did not graduate fromhigh school. 90 percent also come from households where mostfamily members do not go on to college and 62 percent havenever had a mentor whose career path that can follow.

Kaneisha has served as a guest speaker for many organizationsincluding the California Federation of Business and ProfessionalWomen District and State Conferences (CFBPW). Theorganization also handpicked Kaneisha to represent the stateof California on behalf of Young Business and ProfessionalWomen at the 2010 International Congress of Business andProfessional Women in Las Vegas, Nevada.

She recently completed her graduate studies at the Universityof La Verne earned her Masters Degree in Leadership andManagement with a concentration in Nonprofit Management.Kaneisha also serves as the VP of Membership for theHollywood chapter of Business and Professional Women.

Mitch O’FarrellHero of Hollywood

Mitch O’Farrell has served in the 13th Council District for nineyears. His completed projects include creation of the Glassell Parkcommunity & senior center, the Northeast Gateway Chamber ofCommerce, the Los Angeles River Task Force, several new riverparks, and the Elysian Valley bike & walking path. Mitch hashelped bring new soccer fields and negotiated community usesin all of the projects he has worked on over the years.

His current projects include a community garden in Glassell Parkwhere he convinced Wells Fargo Bank to donate a former gangproperty to the city, a streetscape in Silver Lake, a Senior Center inEcho Park, the $83.4-million dollar Echo Park Lake, Boathouse, andCafé renovations, a streetscape project planned for Hollywood andWestern, a greening & landscaping project in East Hollywood atthe city street lighting yard, the Hollywood “cap” park, and therenovation of the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Helping to makeHollywood safer, more enjoyable, and worthy of the high quality,international destination that it deserves to be is a top priority.

Mitch has served on various boards including the Santa CeciliaOrchestra; a world class Los Angeles based orchestra whosemission is serving public school children in underprivileged LosAngeles neighborhoods by teaching them how to play classicalmusic instruments, and he volunteers to improve the quality oflife for city residents and their animal companions.

Mitch is grateful for the privilege to serve the public on behalfof City Council President Garcetti and considers his colleaguesat the office central to any success he has ever had. He isdedicating his award today to the Council District 13 Staff.

Maureen SchultzHero of Hollywood

Maureen is currently SVP at EMI Music the parent company ofCapitol Records, which she joined in 1991. In her capacity at EMI,Maureen took to heart the true meaning of Hollywood andmade a commitment to the community working with theHollywood Chamber for the past 10 years as a Board member.

While sitting on the Chamber Board, Maureen co-chaired theWomen of Distinction Committee for two years organizing andpresenting two successful WOD luncheons. Her efforts earnedrecord fundraising amounts that were used by the CommunityFoundation for various Hollywood area charities.

Maureen also sat on the Committee for the 50th anniversary ofthe Hollywood Walk of Fame. Maureen made it possible forCapitol Records to open their doors to the public for the firsttime in its history. For one day, Capitol allowed the public to tourthe studios where the most famous recording artists in musichistory recorded timeless hits. EMI recreated the recordingstudios in the individual fashions preferred by Frank Sinatra,Dean Martin, and Nat King Cole. The result was that the publicwitnessed a piece of history and ensured the success of thecelebration beyond anyone’s expectations.

Maureen’s charity has reached beyond the boundaries ofHollywood, touching the hearts and affecting the lives ofchildren. For several years, Maureen sat on the Board of “APlace Called Home”. A non-profit youth center located in SouthCentral Los Angeles which provides educational programs tounderprivileged youths, Maureen mentored several children intoadulthood and continues those ongoing relationships today.

Thaddeus Hunter SmithHero of Hollywood

From young adult life as an entrepreneur in Tampa, Florida, tohis current high-profile status as a Hollywood mover and shaker,Thaddeus Hunter Smith is a great example of a true visionaryand Renaissance man. Working for years as one of LA’s top eventplanners and caterers, he created and owned the award-winningBlue Palms Restaurant on La Cienega. Thaddeus took his artisticenergy and creativity to the next level when he created the MusicBox Theater where he has been creating some of the mostexciting special events and concerts in the world.

Thaddeus has demonstrated that business and members of thecommunity can work together to revitalize the district. In hisendeavour to create changes, Thaddeus is the President of theHollywood Entertainment District (BID), and the Vice Presidentof the Hollywood Police Activities League (PAL). He also sits onthe Keep LA Beautiful Board, Hollywood Security Committee,and was on the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce Board ofDirectors just to name a few. He is heavily involved with the L.A.Fire Department, Hollywood Central Park Board of Directors,825 Gallery, and the new Westlake Theater in Mac Arthur Park.

Being a bit of a Renaissance man, He has also proven himselfto be a writer, musician, producer, and artist. Thaddeus’ artworkhas been featured in local and regional galleries throughoutCalifornia. He has sold over fifty pieces of artwork per year ofwhich all profits go to his favorite charity. Thaddeus is makinghis visionary hopes and dreams become a reality for all themany projects he’s working on to bring about a true Renaissancein Hollywood. It’s hard not to be inspired when you talk toThaddeus about all his visions.

About the Hollywood ChamberCommunity Foundation The goal of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce CommunityFoundation is to improve the quality of life in the community ofHollywood. One of the unique features of the Hollywood Chamber ofCommerce is its efforts to support local community nonprofitorganizations. As a 501c3 nonprofit association, contributions tothe Chamber Foundation are tax deductible. The Foundationholds two fundraising events annually – the Women of DistinctionLuncheon and the All Hallows Eve Party at the HollywoodForever Cemetery. Since its inception in 1996, the Foundationhas given out more than $585,000 in grants, and this past year,awarded more than $35,000. In our most current fiscal year,the Foundation assisted the following local organizations:
