LONDON GRENFELL TOWER (JUNE 2017)
the use of the flammable cladding being blamed for
spreading the fire that killed at least 70+ people.
Barry Turner, director of technical policy at Local Authority
Building Control, which represents council building control
teams in England and Wales, said: What we need to
know is what was inspected. You can go on site 16
times but not necessarily see everything you need to see.
They may have inspected the fixings, the fire barrier and
the cavity, which are equally important but are useless if
you put a flammable material on the front.

COMBUSTIBILITY V.S. FIRE RESISTANCE
Non-combustibility:
Material characteristic
Test standard: BS 476 Part 4 Non-combustibility test
for materials
Limited combustibility : BS 476 Part 7 Method of test
to determine the classification of the surface spread of
flame of products
Fire resistance:
System Characteristic : openings + penetrant +
firestop sealing
Test standard: Linear joint: BS EN 1366-3 or
Penetration seal: BS EN 1366-4; BS 476 Part 20.
FS Inspection 10
Materials of non-combustible DO NOT mean
they are fire resistance within a given
period.
For example, a piece of aluminum foil !
NON-COMBUSTIBILITY BS 476 PART 4
No sudden temperature rise
Weight loss
Total flaming time
