‘The best scientific projections indicate

that we have very

little time left -indeed, less than one

hundred months - in which to alter our

behaviour drastically. Although I wish it

were otherwise, I fear

we have reached the point when if we do

too little, too late to tackle this problem,

the consequences

could be catastrophic.’

‘Can nine billion people be fed? Can we cope

with the demands in the future on water? Can

we provide enough energy? Can we do it, all

that, while mitigating and adapting to climate

change? And can we do all that in 21 years

time? That's when these things are going to

start hitting in a really big way. We need to act

now. We need investment in science and

technology, and all the other ways of treating

very seriously these major problems. 2030 is

not very far away.’Professor Sir John Beddington 19th March 2009, London

<It’s the delivery stupid!>

"Regardless

of which route we

choose, the world's

current predicament

limits our maneuvering

room. We are

experiencing a

step-change in the growth

rate of energy demand

due to population growth

and economic

development, and Shell

estimates that after

2015 supplies of

easy-to-access oil

and gas will no

longer keep

up with

demand."

Climate Change Act Targets

• 1990 baseline of CO2 emissions was approximately 590 million tons of CO2.

• An 80% reduction is based on the minimum reductions necessary to avoid causing catastrophic and permanent changes to the climate

• 80% of 590m tons = 118 million tonnes.

• The UK level of CO2 emissions (1.76 tonnes/capita cf. ~10 tonnes today) hasn’t been that low since…… when?

Fire Service Carbon Reduction Plan

Installing Renewable Sources of Energy:

All the following Fire Stations receive energy from renewable sources:

Looking at the service’s

carbon footprint:

East Sussex

Fire and

Rescue

Reducing the Fire Service’s carbon

footprint and leading by example:

Making fire service staff more

energy aware:

“Lessons Learned from London Fire Brigade’s Projects

A major spin-off benefit is that fire station staff are now much more aware of saving energy as a result of the installations being onsite and observing the LED displays.Lights, PC’s and other appliances are being switched off when not in use and doors/windows are closed to prevent heat escaping unnecessarily. The electricity and gas billshave been reduced even further owing to raised awareness of energy and climate change related issues.”

Informing and advising the public

Fire service teams up with energy group

Published Date: 09 April 2009

Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service have teamed up with Changeworks to work together in making vulnerable people in East Lothian safer in their homes.

Changeworks' energy and affordable warmth advisors help householders to understand their heating controls, energy consumption, fuel tariffs and fuel bills.

The energy and affordable warmth advisors can also help household's access grants for enerADVERTISEMENT

gy efficiency measures, such as loft insulation, which also helps tackle fuel poverty and poor housing conditions.

The pilot will enable firefighters carrying out home safety visits or fitting smoke alarms to pass details about Changeworks to

the householder.

Opportunity

Similarly, Changeworks' advisors will carry details of Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service home safety visits, to pass onto the householder during their visit.

Convener of the Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Board, Mike Bridgman, said: "This is a fantastic opportunity to further improve the safety of vulnerable people in East Lothian.

"Although as a Fire and Rescue Service our primary concern when carrying out a home safety visit is the person's safety within the home, we are very enthusiastic to assist in enhancing the wellbeing of the area's residents and working together to

improve energy efficiency whilst doing so."

Organisations

To arrange a free home safety check by local firefighters, with the fitting of a free smoke detector with 10 year batteries as required, phone 0800 169 0320 or for fire safety advice visit the website www.lbfire.org.uk

Chief Executive of Changeworks, Teresa Bray said, "This is a really simple idea, that not only shows how different organisations can work together, but will also achieve warm, dry and safe homes for many more householders in the area".

For further information about Changeworks or to arrange a referral, call 0800 512 012 or visit their website at www.changeworks.org.uk

Leadership

Fire Service Leaders for

Climate/Energy Leadership:

Engage ‘leaders’ within Fire

Service in the climate change/

sustainable energy challenge.

‘If the leader hath no vision the

people will perish’ Proverbs 29:18

Climate Change Leadership

Microgeneration

Focus on installing small

scale renewable

technologies across the Service. Linking

technologies with specific places.

Picking a winner: Solar thermal or biomass heating?

The Great British Refurb

Ed Milliband recently

announced that by 2050 all

British homes will be near

carbon zero. Is now the right

time for Fire Service to step

forward & seek to plan and

deliver this in all Fire Service

Buildings?

Large Scale Renewables

For the Fire Service to be part of the renewable

revolution and join in the

fight against climate change by owning (or catalysing)

their own renewables power stations.

Fire Service: Sustainable Energy Award

Establish an annual award for

sustainable energy (or climate

change) achievement across

the Fire Service. To raise the

profile of ambitious action and

wider engagement of

organisations, individuals &

communities.

Transport

Promote sustainable travel & transport throughout the Fire

Service. Encourage greener driving, greener

vehicles, greener modes of travel.

Affordable Warmth

Help eradicate ‘Fuel

Poverty’

Assist others in delivering

affordable warmth advice

to ‘customers’.
