BS EN3 Kitemarked ExtinguishersThe Kitemark on a portable fire extinguisher provides a visible endorsement by the British Standards Institution, the UK national standards body, of a manufacturer’s commitment to quality.

Manufacturers are required to submit the extinguishers to rigorous examination and testing by the BSI to ensure consistent quality in production.

Samples are taken from production and are submitted by the manufacturer to BSI for type testing to confirm full compliance with the material, design and construction, functional, dimensional and marking requirements specified in the standard. Assessment of the manufacturers quality management systems is carried out by BSI Q.A.

CE MarkAs of May 2002 all fire extinguishers which operate under pressure have to be manufactured to the requirements of the European Pressure Equipment Directive (PED). In response to this Directive, Chubb Fire led the way in being the first UK manufacturer of fire extinguishers to achieve the required standard. As a result, the CE mark now appears on all our extinguishers, recognising and reinforcing the fact that they are safe for their intended use.

Along with the kitemark, all buyers of extinguishers should look out for this mark.

Chubb Fire’s quality management systems for extinguisher manufacture and servicing are accredited to BS EN ISO 9001 and fire alarms servicing to BS EN ISO 9001

Chubb are also members of the following associations:

Five Year Guarantee We have sufficient confidence in our products to back them with a five year guarantee. This means that if any extinguisher becomes defective due to faulty materials of workmanship within five years from the date the extinguisher first went into service, we will repair or, at our option, replace it free of charge. This is provided that the extinguisher is serviced from new in accordance with BS 5306:Pt 3 under a Chubb Fire Maintenance agreement. This guarantee does not cover defects caused by accident, misuse, neglect or unsuitable environmental conditions and excludes service items such as safety pins, O rings, seals, refills etc.

Fire Risk Assessment

The latest Fire Regulations make you, the employer, responsible for fire safety within your business. Even if your workplace is covered by a fire certificate, a fire risk assessment has to be carried out, and records kept if you employ five or more people.

Chubb’s consultancy provides the total fire risk assessment solution. With a national network of consultants, we are able to offer a comprehensive and consistent risk management service.

Chubb view risk assessments as a partnership. Where appropriate, we will look to work with employers and employees alike to minimise the risks and ensure staff know what to do in the event of a fire.

Our consultants are all ex-senior ranking Fire Officers and Graduate members of the Institution of Fire Engineers, many with over 25 years fire safety experience. This experience is invaluable when making recommendations

that concur with those of the enforcing Fire Brigade and current legislation.

Once a building’s fire risk assessment is complete, the customer will be provided with an easy to understand, personally tailored report. This will form the basis of an employer’s on-going fire safety procedures and demonstrate compliance with the Fire Precautions (Workplace) Regulations 1997 (as amended 1999).

The Fire Risk Assessment is always fully documented and carries with it ample professional indemnity for your total peace of mind.

Fire Log BookMaintaining a Fire Log Book is a recommen-dation of British Standard, and is also considered good practice. If you ever had a fire at your site, you could demonstrate to your Insurance Company, the Fire Brigade and even a Court of Law that you effectively managed your fire safety responsibilities.

Maintaining a log book means that your fire alarm / fire extinguisher engineers have full access to the history of equipment on site and if your premises are certified under the Fire Precautions Act 1971, failure to keep a suitable log book may be a breach of the requirements of the certificate, which is a criminal offence.

Chubb Fire’s Log Book is designed for easy record keeping and contains advice and handy reference guides to user’s responsibilities.

The content includes:

Employers, employees and working conditions, training, means of escape, fire doors, emergency lighting, sprinkler systems, fire detection and alarm systems, fire extinguishers, hose reels and hydrants, hot work, fixed fire fighting installations and inspections by authorities.

Detect Fire

Whilst the main focus of your fire protection strategy should be to prevent fire, should a fire accidentally break out, early automatic fire detection is essential to help you contain the fire.

An automatic fire detection and alarm system provides the earliest possible warning of a developing emergency situation. It facilitates safe and swift evacuation of people, can summon the emergency services and also provides accurate information concerning the location of the fire so that it can be dealt with in an appropriate manner. Chubb are experts in installing, servicing and maintaining automatic fire detection. We do a thorough assessment of site-specific circumstances to ensure a tailored automatic fire detection system to best fit your needs.

Chubb offers a choice of standard or fully comprehensive service and maintenance agreements that can also be tailored to meet the individual needs of each customer.

Our products and services include:

• Automatic Fire detection and alarms

• Emergency Lighting (see Escape Fire)

• Gas Detection

• Aspirating Smoke Detection

• Linear Heat Detection

In 2002, there were 477,100 false fire alarms, of which 67,100 arose from the malicious use of a call point. The Alarmed Call Point Cover has been helping stop false fire alarms around the world for decades, without restricting legitimate operation of devices such as fire alarm break glass call points.

The stopper consists of a clear, tamper-proof, tough polycarbonate cover and frame that fits over the break glass call point. When lifted to gain access to the break glass, the battery powered integral sounder

emits a piercing 120dB sound. Immediate attention is drawn to the area and the culprit will either run or be caught.

Contain Fire

Chubb's nationwide team of FETA trained engineers can install and service your fire extinguishers and hose reels against the requirements of the industry standard BS 5306.

The 3 and 6 litre Hydrospray water extinguishers contain special fire fighting additives to enhance overall performance. This provides the user with a greater capacity to tackle some of the most common types of fire, like those involving cloth, wood and paper.

Both extinguishers have passed the 35kv conductivity of discharge test giving greater all round safety if accidentally sprayed on electrical equipment.

Because of the reduced size of the extinguisher and the nature of the fire risks they tackle, Hydrospray extinguishers are

ideally suited to the office environment, where space may be at a premium and ease of use for all staff members is essential.

• Lighter and more effective than ordinary jet water extinguishers.

• Spray nozzle gives wide coverage for maximum fire fighting performance.

• 15 bar pressure means that users can attack fires from a safer distance.

• Safe if accidentally used on electrical equipment.

• O.K. Pin to indicate tampering or accidental discharge.

Foam extinguishers are ideal for multi-risk environments, where the source of the fire could be freely burning solid materials, like wood and paper, or flammable liquids like petrol or diesel.

Spray foam is a fire fighting medium that works by cooling fires and sealing the

vapours to prevent re-ignition, providing the operator with greater all round safety.

Chubb’s dry powder extinguishers are extremely versatile as they can tackle fires involving freely burning materials, petrol and oils, gas and even electrical equipment. In other words, they cover virtually every fire risk.

Whilst they should not be sited in confined spaces or where cleanliness and hygiene is a priority, powder extinguishers are ideal for vehicles and multi-risk manufacturing environments.

Chubb’s dry powder extinguishers contain a specially formulated high-performance powder which has a rapid fire knock down capability. As such, they are some of the most effective powder extinguishers on the market today.

Despite the CO2 extinguisher being the UK’s most commonly used extinguisher, previously they have been supplied with a warning against holding the horn when in use. This is because the CO2 is held as a liquid under pressure within the cylinder, and when it is discharged it expands rapidly, cooling down the material it contacts. As such, during the discharge of a 2kg CO2 extinguisher, the temperature of a traditional horn drops by 40oC, giving the user a risk of

a frost burn if the horn is accidently touched.

To eliminate this problem, Chubb have developed a new reinforced swivel horn that combats the longstanding issue of frost building on the horn.

The new horn comes as standard on all new 2kg CO2 extinguishers. Chubb can also upgrade your extinguishers during your scheduled service visit for the same price as a standard CO2 horn.

Catering Fire Protection

Because of cooking oil’s high auto-ignition temperatures of anything up to 360oC, these fires are notoriously difficult to extinguish. Conventional extinguishers are simply not effective at dealing with this very real risk and it can be dangerous to use them on this type of fire.

To help tackle this, Chubb developed the Fry Fighter. This is a wet chemical extinguisher that has been specifically developed to deal with cooking oils and fat fires.

It contains a specially formulated wet chemical which, when applied to the burning liquid, cools and emulsifies the oil, extinguishes the flame and seals the surface to prevent re-ignition. With its capability

to fight fires in deep fat fryers of up to 75 litres capacity, it is ideal for many catering environments.

• Kitemarked to BS 7937:2000

• 75F rating

• Passed 35kV conductivity of discharge test

• Canary yellow colour coding

• Corrosion resistant stainless steel body

• Lance to tackle fire from a safe distance

• Controllable, low rate discharge to prevent oil splash-back

• Capable of fighting class A fires involving solid material like wood, paper and cloth

Chubb’s Fire Blankets are ideal for tackling blazing chip pans or to wrap round people whose clothing or hair has caught fire. These blankets are made of a special high quality fibreglass material that has been carefully coated with silicone rubber. Fats and oils will not soak through the blanket so eliminating the danger of vapour re-ignition.

• Easy to use in an emergency

• Quick pull action

• Strong, wall mountable PVC holders

• Three sizes of blanket

Cooking oil fires, because of their high auto-ignition temperatures are difficult and dangerous to extinguish. A cooker hood suppression system protects commercial catering equipment and provides automatic detection then activation. The cooker hood suppression system uses a wet chemical extinguishant that has been specificially

developed to deal with cooking oils and fat fires. Alternatively, it can be activated manually through a remote manual pull station. The gas or electrical supply to all protected appliances will be immediately shut off upon activation of the system.

BS EN3 specifies that extinguishers are red with colour codes to denote the contents of each. This enables the user to quickly locate and select the right extinguisher. However, in areas where the aesthetics and appearance of a room or corridor are important, red extinguishers are not always desirable.

Chubb's stainless steel water and foam extinguishers are ideal for restaurants, hotel foyers and other public areas and working environments where the architecture and ambience is a consideration.

Where stainless steel extinguishers are used, training of nominated users is essential to ensure there is no unnecessary user delay in tackling a fire, should it be safe to do so.

A unique accessory that fits on to any hose reel. It converts the water into foam. This makes the hose reel suitable for fighting fires involving petrol, oils and volatile liquids.

The Hosemaster contains enough concentrated foam to produce the

equivalent of 20 standard 9 litre foam extinguishers. It is supplied with fittings, couplings, water/jet spray hose reel nozzle and 11 litres of foam concentrate.*

*Normally supplied with Universal Plus AR Foam (but

others can be used).

Chubb's exclusive Multiway 1 fire hose reel is ideal for hotels, warehousing, workshops and other general area applications. Due to its simplistic design, it can be installed and maintained by a single engineer, with minimum disruption to your working environment.

The hose reels are available in fixed, swinging, recessed and concealed versions, with manual or automatic valves.

The Concealed Hose Reel is ideal for wherever there is the need to provide fire fighting equipment which both matches

and complements the surrounding decor. It is fixed directly to the building structure in a recess. Fitted with a brushed aluminium architrave and faced with a lightweight door which can be finished to match the decor.

• Quick and easy to install

• Constructed for strength and performance

• Automatic or manual versions

• Easy to service

• 19mm and 25mm bore

• Designed to BS EN671-1

For fire risks that demand a greater concentration of first-aid protection than can be provided by portable fire extinguishers, Chubb Fire offers a range of larger capacity, trolley-mounted extinguisher units.

Foam, Dry Powder and CO2 units are available, combining the capacity to control and extinguish fires of considerable intensity, with limited trolley backward movement that is crucial to effective first-aid fire fighting.

CO2 - can be used on flammable liquid fires and being non-corrosive is ideally suited for risks involving electrical machinery such as switchgear and powerplant.

POWDER - These extinguishers can be filled with either GPS (general purpose Class A, B and C), FC Standard dry (B and C) or Monnex (Class B and C). These powders are capable of dealing with flammable liquid fires and fires involving flammable gases. GPS can also deal with Class A fires involving carbonaceous materials. All powders listed can be applied to electrical fires.

FOAM - These extinguishers are ideal for use in industrial complexes, aboard ships and in military establishments. Suitable for all Class B fires involving flammable liquids, the foam produced can also extinguish Class A fires of a freely burning nature.

Drawing on our experience and expertise to select and design a system that is technically capable of protecting your risk.

Our range of products and Services include:

• CO2 extinguishing systems

• Gaseous extinguishing systems

• Foam and Water extinguishing systems

• Sprinkler systems

• Service and maintenance of all systems, regardless of manufacture

In these days of fire risk management, a vital way of protecting lives and high value property is through the installation of fire suppression systems.

If your fixed fire suppression system discharges, the fire could re-ignite if your protected area is not well sealed to prevent gaseous agents escaping.

A Room Integrity Test will check the protected room’s capacity to hold gas.

Integrity Testing is a mandatory requirement of BS ISO 14520 and should be undertaken annually.

31 December 2002 was the last day that existing Halon fire suppression systems were permitted to be recharged with Halon. After 31 December 2003, all Halon systems must have been decommissioned and the Halon itself must have been reclaimed by an

approved contractor. For further information phone our Halon Hotline on 01932 777210.

Chubb Fire provides a service for the disposal of Halon extinguishers. Product No. Description

Dry and Wet Rising mains are designed for use by the fire brigade and other trained personnel. They provide a readily available means of delivering considerable quantities of water to extinguish or to prevent the spread of fire.

Under BS 5306-1, dry and wet risers should be visually inspected every six months and serviced annually.

Working to this standard, Chubb can provide a responsive national service, supplying a full range of products for new and existing systems. Servicing is arranged around times convenient to the customer, with minimum disruption to the working environment. All service work is carried out in line with build-ing’s fire risk assessment and fire certificate.

Mobile fire points not only give increased fire fighting capability, but are ideal for those situations where a fixed fire point may not be practical. The featured mobile point which carries two extinguishers and a sand bucket is made from quality steel, is resistant to corrosion and is easy to manoeuvre.

• Light, manoeuvrable and strong

• Made from high quality heavy duty steel

• Corrosion resistant

• High impact wheels

Chubb Fire buckets are highly visible and hold approximately 5kg of sand, which is suitable for dealing with spillages of oil, volatile liquids and flammable materials.

• Available wall mounted or free standing

• Available with or without lids

Chubb strongly recommends the use of silver sand when refilling fire buckets. Whilst this specialist sand is not included with the buckets as standard, 25kg refill packs are now available. This size is enough to fill around five buckets.

Fire Stands are most effectively used where an extinguisher cannot easily be wall mounted. For example on thin partioned walls or in a workshop environment where wall mounting is simply not appropriate. Also, stands are often deployed where the overall appearance of a room is important or where improved visibility of an extinguisher is critical. Stands not only protect the extinguisher from passer-by damage, they can also aid the user in quickly locating an extingusiher in the case of an emergency.

• Available as single or double fire stands

• Produced in three colours - magnolia, grey or red

• NEW chrome stands available (see picture above)

CO2 Secure Double Fire Stand Many CO2’s have a tendency to fall over easily when they are stood on the floor or on a fire stand, particularly when passers-by brush past them in a busy corridor. Containing pressure almost four times more than any other standard

extinguisher, the dangers to staff and visitors in a workplace are all too apparent. Moreover, any discharge could also leave a building without suitable cover.

By introducing an industry unique ‘hot-slot’, the CO2 Secure Double Fire Stand eliminates this potential hazard. The hot-slot firmly holds the CO2 upright when not in use without restraining the user from quickly retrieving it as and when it is required.

Having the right sign in the right place will help ensure the safe evacuation of staff in the event of a fire and will also help to comply with the regulations

Chubb Fire’s range of fire and safety signs incorporate the latest technology to provide cost effective solutions.

To see the full range of our fire and safety signs, request a copy of our Signs Catalogue by calling 0800 32 1666.

Photoluminescent escape route signs retain their luminous power for several hours to allow occupants to evacuate buildings quickly and safely in the dark and can be recharged any number of times.

Low location lighting uses a similar principle. Directional indicators on floors and walls glow in the dark to point out a clear, unambiguous and continuous escape route.

A major safety benefit is achieved by having illuminated guidance below the level where the smoke collects.

Escape fire

Chubb can install, service and maintain emergency lighting to aid safe evacuation in the event of a power failure to normal lighting.

The requirement for emergency lighting, its type and location, is defined through the carrying out of a fire risk assessment.

However, Chubb can provide detailed guidance on where luminaires should be installed and the minimum levels of illumination for escape routes and open areas, together with the minimum period of illumination of the luminaire after failure of the normal lighting.

Training

The objective of each course is to give delegates all round knowledge of what to do in the event of a fire.

Specialist training will be given to highlight particular fire risks and methods of fire prevention. These include instruction on the colour coding of fire extinguishers and which type is safe and appropriate to use.

Every course is reinforced with videos and questionnaires to help delegates retain the information. As part of our comprehensive programme there are also practical demonstrations during which delegates are able to participate in extinguishing a number of controlled fires, using a range of different extinguishers.

Other courses on offer include:

• Practical Fire Safety Training/Refresher

• Basic Awareness Training

• Risk Assessment Training Course

• Train the Trainer Course

• Bespoke Training Courses

Training Manuals and a Certificate of Attendance will be provided to all attendees. All courses can be offered on or off-site to suit the needs of the employer.

See available dates at www.chubb.co.uk/training

Chubb offers a range of training options for employers to ensure that employees understand fire prevention and are familiar with fire regulations.

Training GuidanceAccording to the Home Office published 'Fire Safety: An Employer's Guide', training should be "repeated as necessary - usually once or twice a year". This should "preferably include practical exercises."

Consistent with this advice, Chubb recommends that key, nominated members of staff are trained to fire marshal level and in the use of fire fighting equipment. Ideally when deciding on who to nominate, select members of staff who are assertive, permanently based on site and likely to stay with the organisation for a sufficient length of time.

Benefits of Chubb Fire TrainingChubb Fire’s objective is to provide delegates with a sound knowledge of effective fire safety practices. Our training courses will:

• Ensure staff can evacuate safely in an emergency, and assist the escape of customers, visitors, patients or pupils

• Raise awareness of fire prevention

• Demonstrate your responsibility towards the well-being of employees

• Help you comply with fire regulations
