BS EN3 Kitemarked ExtinguishersThe Kitemark on a portable fire extinguisher provides a visible endorsement by the British Standards Institution, the UK national standards body, of a manufacturer’s commitment to quality.

Manufacturers are required to submit the extinguishers to rigorous examination and testing by the BSI to ensure consistent quality in production.

Samples are taken from production and are submitted by the manufacturer to BSI for type testing to confirm full compliance with the material, design and construction, functional, dimensional and marking requirements specified in the standard. Assessment of the manufacturers quality management systems is carried out by BSI Q.A.

CE MarkAs of May 2002 all fire extinguishers which operate under pressure have to be manufactured to the requirements of the European Pressure Equipment Directive (PED). In response to this Directive, Chubb Fire led the way in being the first UK manufacturer of fire extinguishers to achieve the required standard. As a result, the CE mark now appears on all our extinguishers, recognising and reinforcing the fact that they are safe for their intended use.

Along with the kitemark, all buyers of extinguishers should look out for this mark.

Five Year Guarantee We have sufficient confidence in our products to back them with a five year guarantee. This means that if any extinguisher becomes defective due to faulty materials of workmanship within five years from the date the extinguisher first went into service, we will repair or, at our option, replace it free of charge. This is provided that the extinguisher is serviced from new in accordance with BS 5306:Pt 3 under a Chubb Fire Maintenance agreement. This guarantee does not cover defects caused by accident, misuse, neglect or unsuitable environmental conditions and excludes service items such as safety pins, O rings, seals, refills etc.

The latest Fire Regulations make you, the employer, responsible for fire safety within your business. Even if your workplace is covered by a fire certificate, a fire risk assessment has to be carried out, and records kept if you employ five or more people.

Fire Log BookMaintaining a Fire Log Book is a recommen-dation of British Standard, and is also considered good practice. If you ever had a fire at your site, you could demonstrate to your Insurance Company, the Fire Brigade and even a Court of Law that you effectively managed your fire safety responsibilities.

Despite the CO2 extinguisher being the UK’s most commonly used extinguisher, previously they have been supplied with a warning against holding the horn when in use. This is because the CO2 is held as a liquid under pressure within the cylinder, and when it is discharged it expands rapidly, cooling down the material it contacts. As such, during the discharge of a 2kg CO2 extinguisher, the temperature of a traditional horn drops by 40oC, giving the user a risk of

a frost burn if the horn is accidently touched.

To eliminate this problem, Chubb have developed a new reinforced swivel horn that combats the longstanding issue of frost building on the horn.

The new horn comes as standard on all new 2kg CO2 extinguishers. Chubb can also upgrade your extinguishers during your scheduled service visit for the same price as a standard CO2 horn.

Catering Fire Protection

Because of cooking oil’s high auto-ignition temperatures of anything up to 360oC, these fires are notoriously difficult to extinguish. Conventional extinguishers are simply not effective at dealing with this very real risk and it can be dangerous to use them on this type of fire.

To help tackle this, Chubb developed the Fry Fighter. This is a wet chemical extinguisher that has been specifically developed to deal with cooking oils and fat fires.

It contains a specially formulated wet chemical which, when applied to the burning liquid, cools and emulsifies the oil, extinguishes the flame and seals the surface to prevent re-ignition. With its capability

to fight fires in deep fat fryers of up to 75 litres capacity, it is ideal for many catering environments.

Cooking oil fires, because of their high auto-ignition temperatures are difficult and dangerous to extinguish. A cooker hood suppression system protects commercial catering equipment and provides automatic detection then activation. The cooker hood suppression system uses a wet chemical extinguishant that has been specificially

developed to deal with cooking oils and fat fires. Alternatively, it can be activated manually through a remote manual pull station. The gas or electrical supply to all protected appliances will be immediately shut off upon activation of the system.

However, in areas where the aesthetics and appearance of a room or corridor are important, red extinguishers are not always desirable.

Chubb's stainless steel water and foam extinguishers are ideal for restaurants, hotel foyers and other public areas and working environments where the architecture and ambience is a consideration.

Where stainless steel extinguishers are used, training of nominated users is essential to ensure there is no unnecessary user delay in tackling a fire, should it be safe to do so.

A unique accessory that fits on to any hose reel. It converts the water into foam. This makes the hose reel suitable for fighting fires involving petrol, oils and volatile liquids.

The Hosemaster contains enough concentrated foam to produce the

For fire risks that demand a greater concentration of first-aid protection than can be provided by portable fire extinguishers, Chubb Fire offers a range of larger capacity, trolley-mounted extinguisher units.

Foam, Dry Powder and CO2 units are available, combining the capacity to control and extinguish fires of considerable intensity, with limited trolley backward movement that is crucial to effective first-aid fire fighting.

CO2 - can be used on flammable liquid fires and being non-corrosive is ideally suited for risks involving electrical machinery such as switchgear and powerplant.

POWDER - These extinguishers can be filled with either GPS (general purpose Class A, B and C), FC Standard dry (B and C) or Monnex (Class B and C). These powders are capable of dealing with flammable liquid fires and fires involving flammable gases. GPS can also deal with Class A fires involving carbonaceous materials. Chubb Dorgard is an acoustically activated fire door release device designed to allow freedom of access around a busy workplace, whilst protecting the building and its occupants against the dangers of fire.

Chubb Dorgard can be attached to a fire door to hold it open as required. If the alarm should sound for more than 12 seconds, Chubb Dorgard will release the door into the

shut position to help contain the fire to a given section of the building.

Chubb Dorgard should only be installed:

• in premises with an automatic fire alarm (i.e smoke and/or heat detectors)

• the fire alarm should comply with BS 5839

Dry and Wet Rising mains are designed for use by the fire brigade and other trained personnel. They provide a readily available means of delivering considerable quantities of water to extinguish or to prevent the spread of fire.

Under BS 5306-1, dry and wet risers should be visually inspected every six months and serviced annually.

Working to this standard, Chubb can provide a responsive national service, supplying a full range of products for new and existing systems. Servicing is arranged around times convenient to the customer, with minimum disruption to the working environment. All service work is carried out in line with build-ing’s fire risk assessment and fire certificate.

Mobile fire points not only give increased fire fighting capability, but are ideal for those situations where a fixed fire point may not be practical. The featured mobile point which carries two extinguishers and a sand bucket is made from quality steel, is resistant to corrosion and is easy to manoeuvre.

Fire Stands are most effectively used where an extinguisher cannot easily be wall mounted. For example on thin partioned walls or in a workshop environment where wall mounting is simply not appropriate. Also, stands are often deployed where the overall appearance of a room is important or where improved visibility of an extinguisher is critical. Stands not only protect the extinguisher from passer-by damage, they can also aid the user in quickly locating an extingusiher in the case of an emergency.

CO2 Secure Double Fire Stand Many CO2’s have a tendency to fall over easily when they are stood on the floor or on a fire stand, particularly when passers-by brush past them in a busy corridor. Containing pressure almost four times more than any other standard

Photoluminescent escape route signs retain their luminous power for several hours to allow occupants to evacuate buildings quickly and safely in the dark and can be recharged any number of times.

Training

The objective of each course is to give delegates all round knowledge of what to do in the event of a fire.

Specialist training will be given to highlight particular fire risks and methods of fire prevention. These include instruction on the colour coding of fire extinguishers and which type is safe and appropriate to use.

Every course is reinforced with videos and questionnaires to help delegates retain the information.
