Karen’s Recovery. . .

On October 5, 1998 Karen Boswell dropped her twosons, Kenny and Kevin, off for an evening of funat a North County mall. However, unlike most

moms, Karen never made it back to pick them up. Tragedystruck and Karen fell victim to a fiery car crash that lefther a double amputee with third degree burns to more than85-percent of her body. She would lay in a coma for ninemonths and spend two long years recovering from manysurgeries at the UCSD Regional Burn Center. Herprognosis was grim and she was given less than a two-percent chance of survival. No one expected Karen toleave the hospital . . . but she did. Karen soon realized thatby having survived such a serious accident, she was givena second chance at life and she was determined to live lifeto the fullest.

Before her accident, and when Karen was busy raisingher two boys, she would tell them that there is no suchword as “can’t” in the dictionary. During the painfulrehabilitation after her accident, Karen would receive thatsame pep talk from her two sons as they visited herbedside. Their encouragement gave Karen the strength togo on and to become a survivor.

It has been six years since the accident and Karen’srecovery has been nothing less than remarkable. In fact, there is very little Karen “can’t” do. Although, she neverreturned to her full time career in the constructionindustry, she now has resumed driving her own van, andregularly volunteers for the UCSD Regional Burn Centerand the Burn Institute. At the Burn Institute, Karen assistswith clerical work and special events such as the annual

Firefighters’ DestructionDerby and Burn Run/FIREEXPO.

Through a grant from theChange A Life Foundation, the Burn Institute was ableto provide a motorizedwheelchair for Karen, which allows her to bemore independent.

With her wheelchair and her acquired prosthetic legs, there’s little Karen can’t accomplish. Two years ago,Karen drove to Arizona for the World Burn Congress andhas attended two Burn Institute sponsored retreats forAdult Burn Survivors.

Anyone who has met Karen can tell you she’s aninspiration to be around. Ironically, Burn InstituteAdvisory Board Member, fellow volunteer and burnsurvivor, Cindy Rutter, was Karen’s nurse during herrecovery. And, Burn Institute Board Member DavidHoyt, M.D. was Karen’s trauma doctor. Both have toldKaren that her recovery is nothing short of a miracle.

Karen enjoys writing poems and taking computerclasses and she looks forward to flying in an airplane forthe first time. (Editors Note: The two men who pulled Karen from thefiery vehicle were honored with the Burn Institute’sSpirit of Courage Award in 1999.)

At the 2003 Wizardof Oz themed RetreatFor Adult Burn Survivors, Karen completed thechallenging ropes course and received theCourageous Lion Award.

Camp Beyond the Scars helps burn

Camp Beyond the Scars is one of theBurn Institute’s most notable burn survivorsupport programs, and isavailable twice ayear. Young burnsurvivors ages 6-15participate in theprogram while adultburn survivors, ages16-18 volunteer asc o u n s e l o r s - i n -training, and thoseover age 18 participateas counselors/mentors.

This past August, camp was held atCamp Cuyamaca inDescanso and was

centered around the themeof "Creating Your Own Paradise." It is imperativethat young burn survivors recognize early on howto focus on the positives in their lives and learnto not dwell on their injuries. By focusing on thefuture, they learn that their injury is not the end,but a beginning to a new journey in life. Mostimportantly they realize it is possible to reach"beyond their scars."

Camp provides a friendly and supportiveatmosphere with many opportunities toparticipate in a variety of fun activities.Learning a new hobby or activity createsexcitement and yet another way to buildself-confidence and self-esteem. Thissummer’s camp included suchactivities as a golf learning center, horse back riding, swimming, hiking, sailing, kayaking, singing, crafts andmuch more!

A heartfelt “thank you!” goes out to all thevolunteers who gave of their time and energy to makethis Tenth Anniversary Celebration of camp amemorable one.

The Burn Institute is a nonprofit health agency dedicated toreducing the number of burn injuries and deaths in San Diego,Imperial, Riverside and San Bernardino counties through fireand burn prevention education, burn care research andtreatment, and burn survivor support services.

On Sunday, October 31, thousands of localchildren will be trick-or-treating in celebrationof Halloween. However, there are many fireand burn hazards lurking around which couldpotentially ruin this bewitching holiday.

Below are some fire and burn safety tips:

• Wear only flame-resistant/flame-retardant costumes.

• Instead of illuminating your pumpkin with a candle, use a small inexpensive flashlight instead.

• Keep exits clear of decorations, and make sure there is nothingblocking your home fire escape routes.

• Use flashlights as alternatives to candles or torch lights when when decorating walkways and yards - they are much safer for trick-or-treaters, whose costumes could brush against the lighting.

• NEVER use an open flame inside a paper luminary bag.

• Instruct children to stay away from open flames and teach them how to STOP, DROP, ROLL, COOL & CALL 9-1-1.
