Chemicals,compressedgases,biologicalagentsandradiationareallusedattheUniversity.Thesesubstancesare
generallystoredandusedinlaboratories,workshopsanddangerousgoodsdepots.
Theindividualdepartmentsandworkgroupsthatstoreorusethesesubstancesarerequiredtoimplement
appropriatelocalemergencyprocedurestomanageincidentsinvolvingthosehazardoussubstances.Although
hazardoussubstancesareusuallystoredandusedinsmallquantities,anaccidentalspillorreleasemayhavean
impactonthesafetyofthebuildingoccupants.

Buildingemergencyproceduresaretraditionallyfocusedonthesafeevacuationofstaff,studentsandvisitors.
Thisisanappropriateresponsetomostemergencysituations(eg.fire,gasleak,internalreleaseofhazardous
materials),butinsomesituationsitmayactuallybesafertostayinsidethebuilding.
AnemergencylockdownwillbeimplementedwhennecessarytoensurethattheoccupantsofUniversity
Buildingsareprotectedfromanexternalthreat,includingbutnotlimitedto,violentincidents,civildisturbanceor
severestorms.Anemergencylockdownmayalsobeimplementedinsituationswhereadditionalpedestrian
trafficoncampusmayhindertheworkoftheattendingemergencyservices.
YouwillbenotifiedofanemergencylockdownbytheattendingEmergencyServicespersonnel,SecurityPatrolor
yourChiefWarden.Thismessagewillbecommunicatedviathebuilding’semergencywarningPAsystemor

Peoplewhoareblindorwhohaveavisualimpairmentmayhavedifficultyinfindingandnegotiatingthe
emergencyexitroutes.Neverthelesssomepeoplewhodohaveadisabilitymaynotrequireassistance.
Staffandstudentswhomayexpecttohavedifficultiesduringanemergencyorevacuationshouldmake
themselvesandtheirusuallocationknowntotheChiefWardenofthebuilding.TheChiefWardenshouldthen
privatelydiscusswiththemtheemergencyproceduresforthebuildingandmodifythese(ifnecessary)to
accommodatetheirdisability.
Visualsignalsmaybeusedtoalertthosepeoplewithimpairedhearing,oranescortmaybeassignedto
communicateemergencymessagestothem.Emergencyexitroutesmustbekeptclearforthosewithvisual
impairment.Inthemajorityofcasesanescortshouldbeallocatedtoprovideassistanceandwaitwiththeperson
untilsuchtimeastheycanbesafelyevacuated.
Intheeventofanemergencythatleadstoabuildingevacuation,peoplewithdisabilitieswhorequireassistance
toevacuateshouldbeassembledatapre-arranged“safeplace”andattendedtobytheirescortsoratleastone
buildingwarden.
Immediatelyfollowingtheevacuationof“able-bodied”buildingoccupants,thosewithdisabilitieswhoare
capableofusingthestairsshouldbeassistedfromthebuildingbyanescortorwarden.Anotherwardenorescort
shouldremainwiththoseinthe“safeplace”awaitingevacuation.Peoplewhoareincapableofusingthestairs
shouldbeevacuatedunderthecontroloftheattendingEmergencyServices.
