The holiday season is almost here and for mostpeople this is a festive and joyous time of year.However, with all the fun and festivities comes the

potential for fire and burn hazards - especially when itcomes to Christmas trees. The photos below demonstratehow rapidly a tree fire can spread.

Holiday Recipe: Fire Retardant Christmas Tree

The following recipe isdesigned to increase fluidintake for a freshly cut treeand help keep it from dryingout too quickly andbecoming a fire hazard.

Combine the followingingredients in a bucket:• 1 gallon warm water

• 1 pint clear Karo Syrup

• 4 oz. liquid chlorine bleach

• 1/2 teaspoon borax

• 2 oz. cider vinegar

• 2 oz. liquid Woolite

Make a fresh cut three inchesfrom the trunk base. Fill theremainder of the bucket withwarm water and place the trunkof the tree in the bucket. For bestresults, leave the tree in thebucket for at least five daysbefore bringing it inside. Use theremaining mixture to fill the treestand.

Keep your freshly cut tree fire safe:

• Pine needles should be difficult to pull from the branches and should not break when bent between your fingers. If a shower of needles falls when you bounce the tree trunk on the ground, the tree is dry and potentially a fire hazard.

• Make a fresh cut three-inches from the base of the tree and place the tree in fluid (see recipe below) so it can quickly absorb water.

• Choose a sturdy stand that holds at least one gallon of liquid.

• Check the fluid level often and keep the stand filled. If the fluid level drops below the cut end of the trunk, it can form a seal preventing absorption of liquid. An average tree can consume up to one-gallon of water daily.

• Make sure your tree is placed at least three feet away from any heat source and is not blocking any exit.

• Place the tree near an outlet so that cords will not extend long distances.

• When your tree begins to shed needles, it’s time to safely dispose of it. Dried-out trees are a serious fire hazard and should not be left in a garage or placed against the outside of your home.

Smashing Cars Raises More Than$41,000 for the Burn Institute

You could say the Eleventh AnnualFirefighters’ Destruction Derby, held onJune 8, was a smashing success.

Firefighters representing 15 fire departmentsfrom throughout San Diego County put thepedal to the metal and raised more than $41,000for the important work of the Burn Institute.

Burn-Injured Chi ldren Exper ience

T his past August, morethan 50 burn-injuredchildren enjoyed a blast

from the past with a 50’sthemed summer camp. Theweek-long salute to the 50’s

included rootbeer floats sponsored by the BurnInstitute Auxiliary, a bubble gum blowingcontest, swing dance lessons, Karaoke, and asock hop dance “Under The Trees.”

The Burn Institute’s Camp Beyond The Scarsis specifically designed to help burn-injuredchildren. While at camp, children meet otherchildren with burn injuries and learn to copewith the ongoing emotional and physicalhardships they must endure each and every dayas a result of their injury.

It was a warm week, however everyone keptcool with swimming, a visit to a local water park,a special field trip to Lake Cuyamaca for boatingand fishing, and horseback riding.

Special thanks to El Cajon Elks Lodge #1812for a special VIP lunch on opening day, and thankyou to all the San Diego County Kiwanis Clubswho prepared and served an Italian dinner.

An event of the San Diego - Imperial CountyFire Fighters Advisory Council to the BurnInstitute, this year’s Burn Run/FIRE EXPO

welcomed more than 15,000 attendees and raisedmore than $200,000 for the important work of theBurn Institute.

The Burn Run portion of the event began brightand early with two routes - one in the North Countyand one in the South County. The North Run startedwith a kick-off breakfast at Poway Fire Station #1and the South route got underway with thetraditional kick-off-breakfast at the El Cajon ElksLodge #1812. During the “Run” of fire apparatus,fire departments from throughout San Diego andImperial counties presented the Burn Institute withchecks earned from various fundraising events heldthroughout the year including t-shirt sales and ticketsales to Fire Fighter’s Night at the Padres.

At 2 p.m., the two routes converged in MissionValley for the Arrival Ceremonies. More than 80fire apparatus paraded into the parking lot ofQualcomm Stadium with their lights and sirensblaring. KUSI-TV served as a presenting sponsor ofthe event, which included reporter Doug Curlee asEXPO emcee, and weekend morning anchor andreporter Bridget Naso on-board a fire truck duringthe arrival ceremonies.

This fun-filled family day included a kiddykarnival, a community education pavilion, food, liveentertainment, live firefighting demonstrations andmuch more.

The day ended with Fire Fighter’s Night at thePadres, with special on-field ceremonies honoringthe fire service. The pre-game honor included a fireservice tribute video and eleven-year-old burnsurvivor and Honorary Chair Jacob Castillothrowing out the first pitch.

Garcia Receives Top Volunteer Honor

In June, Burn Institute AuxiliaryPresident Jolee Garcia was awardedthe prestigious Combined Health

Agency (CHAD) Volunteer of the YearAward.

The award is presented each year tovolunteers from various non-profitorganizations for their outstandingsupport and dedication to philanthropicwork.

For the past eight years, Jolee has beena dedicated Burn Institute volunteer and

has been actively involved with the BurnInstitute Auxiliary. In addition, Joleealso helps out with many other Institutespecial events - her energy level is justamazing! With three children, Joleebalances volunteer work and participateswith many of her children’s schoolactivities including PTA. Even with herhectic schedule, she always finds time tovolunteer an average of 10-15 hours aweek at the Burn Institute.

Soon, residents from throughoutSan Bernardino and Riversidecounties will benefit from thesame fire and burn preventionprograms and burn survivorsupport services that residents of

San Diego and Imperial counties have benefittedfrom for 30 years.

On October 9, a news conference was heldannouncing the establishment of the Burn Institute -Inland Empire located at the Arrowhead RegionalMedical Center in Colton, CA.

The kick-off comes after years of work by the BurnInstitute, local leaders from the Inland Empire, andlocal fire departments to bring a broad range ofneeded services to the communities of bothcounties.

This July firefighters took to the streets for the 2ndAnnual “Give Burns The Boot” Annual Firefighter’sBoot Drive.

During the morning and evening commutes, the firefighters raised a record $70,000 for the BurnInstitute. Golf Tournament.Even though no single golfer took away the coveted

$15,000 Hole-In-One cash prize, the day was filled withfun none-the-less. The event began with complimentaryrange practice, followed by lunch, then 18-holes of golf.Afterwards, the festivities continued with a silent auction,live auction, prime-rib dinner, and awards ceremony.
