Children’s Training in Finland
• In Nov. 2008 a 2 year study on Finnishchildren in sports was published– Finnish Olympic Commmittee, Finnish Coaches’
Association, Young Finland Association• Does a Finnish child move and train enough to
make it in top level sports?• Is the training monotonous or is there enough
variation?• How do we develop training for the future?

Study on Children’s Training:Strength
• ”One can begin strength training already at a very young age … before puberty.” pg.9
• ”Before puberty a strength training regimenshould include exercises which improve musclecoordination and lifting techniques as well as speed strength qualities by doing jumps and medicine ball throws.” pg. 24
![Page 22: FINNISH WEIGHTLIFTING FEDERATION PRESENTS · Weightlifting competition(1 kg = 1 point) – 2. 1 successful lift = 3 points) – 3. Standing triple jump (10 cm = 1 point) – 4. Strength Training for Children• Before the start of school (age 6) the children become stronger
when they move around actively, like normal climbing and playing• 6 - 12-year-olds can begin to train speed and speed strength based
exercises:– Exercises are done with own body weight or very light resistance– Good exercises are various jumps and dashes/running– At this point one can begin to learn lifting techniques with a stick
• In puberty the athlete’s nervous system in the muscles begins to matureand one can begin speed strength based resistance training with weights25-50% of the athlete’s own body weight
• After reaching one’s full length the athlete can begin an adult-liketraining regimen

Finnish Weightlifting FededationThree Year Rule
• Child may exceed resistances higher than 50% of his/her bodyweight when:– Training is lead by a knowledgable coach– The child has been involved in an age-appropriate
strength training regimen for about three years– Lifting technique is good: no problems with
flexibility, the back stays straight, knees remain in the same line as the big toe, elbows do not bend
– Coaching is child-centered!
![Page 26: FINNISH WEIGHTLIFTING FEDERATION PRESENTS · Weightlifting competition(1 kg = 1 point) – 2. 1 successful lift = 3 points) – 3. Standing triple jump (10 cm = 1 point) – 4.
