Parts are automatically fed from the heat treat operation to the roller conveyor. The power roller conveyor rotates and transports steering shafts beneath three flexible finishing heads to create a continuous process. The first finishing head uses grit-impregnated nylon disks to remove the heat treat scale and to begin the finish of the OD. The disks are grouped to form a 6-in. face wheel. This type of media allows flexibility to remove discoloration from the rack teeth. Oscillation of the work spindle also improves the action of the disk. The second and third heads use pro- gressively finer nylon wheels to produce the required Ra. All heads have automatic wheel wear adjustments to provide continuous work flow without operator involvement. Circle 110 on reader information card Compound Application Stan Sax Corp.
