There’s nothing like a good campfire to get peopletalking. We put together a direct mail piece to invitepeople to reconsider the way they’ve been marketingthemselves and to believe in the power of a goodstory—their story.

This wine label design was created for an upscale res-taurant called Cinghale, which is Italian for “wild boar.”Exit 10 was commissioned to create the entire identityfor the restaurant, including large charcoal render-ings of boars and a label for the restaurant’s own wine,Rosso. All elements of the label were created usingpen, ink and pencil, with photocopier manipulation ofthe contrast and resolution. The i magery was meant tocapture the energy and attitude of a wild boar. This ismanifested by the use of ragged lines, expressionistic
typography and claustrophobic use of white space.

Throughout the theater season at Portland CenterStage, audiences experience a roller-coaster ride ofemotions and responses from laughter to despair.Plazm’s posters for the campaign capture the emo-tional ride, as the city’s most prestigious theatercompany produces comedies, musi cals, traditionalShakespeare and dramas that take on serious con-temporary issues—including the world premiere of thestage adaptation of Ken Kesey’s classic novel Some-
times a Great Notion . Like Portland Center Stage, we
work with internationally acclaimed artists alongsidetop local talent.

Gastronomic entrepreneur Rajah Dagstani of Dagstani& Sons approached me about designing a logo for hisnew mobile cappuccino venture “Piccolo Principe”—the little prince—but neither one of us know how toleave well enough alone, so a logo tur ned into cover-ing the entire van in gold leaf and classic flake goldpaint. It’s coming to a town near you as soon as wefigure out the intricacies of the plumbing.

This poster was created as the first in a series ofmaterials to promote creative exploration. A decon-structed Apple Power Mac G4 was handcrafted intoa fantasy world using a myriad of elements includingclay, balloons, pipe cleaner, insulation, wire, paper, plastic and anything else we could get our h andson. By making this poster interactive in the form ofa comic haiku, we invite th e viewers to provide thepiece with alternate meanings.

For many designers, creating things by hand is a reaction to too muchcomputer-based design. Since the rst Fingerprint was published, ideasthat were once on the fringe have begun to thrive in the mainstream. Fromtypography and illustration to book-making and lm titles, elements ofhandcraft have soaked into everyday life.
Fingerprint No. 2 reects the evolution of those ideas. In this second volume, you’ll still nd plenty of projects created entirely without the aid of computer
technology. But you’ll also discover how designers are beginning to incorporatethe two aesthetics—handmade and digital—in order to best communicatetheir message. A third, hybrid aesthetic is emerging; one that marries thetechnologies of the past and future into a vibrant, exciting present.
Look inside to discover 133 projects and exclusive visual essays from leadingdesigners, including Robynne Raye, Stefan Bucher and Christian Helms. Thesepieces of work prove that handmade elements are not only vital to excellent
design, but often result in exceptional design.
Listen for the pulse, which cannot be faked, forged or falsied. Look for thengerprint. It is the key to design’s success.
Chen Design Associates is a place for collaboration,
education and dynamic invention. The award-
winning design studio partners with a wide range
of clients, from start-up ventures to established
corporations, local to global, artistic to analytic.
