Breeks, plus 2’s, 3’s 4’s etc
General Information.
The difference between breeks and plus 2’s, 3’s and 4’s is in the amount ofover hanging cloth from the knee band. Breeks are a slimmer cut andgenerally run directly into the knee band. Plus 2’s have 2” of fold/over hangand thus 4” of extra cloth, plus 3’s have 3” of fold and thus 6” of extra cloth andso on.
How to measure.
Option one: Copying an existing pair.
Lay them out flat on a table or whilst being worn, undo the fasteners and letthem hang down. Measure the outside and inside leg to the top of the kneeband. Supply the required net/finished measure. Knee bands vary in depth.Lambton tailoring knee bands are 11/2” deep.
Option two: Calculating from an existing pair of trousers.
Take the outside and inside leg measure and divide by two. Add two inchesand then add a further 2 times X” depending on what style you want. WhereX = the name/number of the garment.
IE Breeks = 0”Plus 2’s = 4”Plus 3’s = 6”Plus 4’s = 8”
Measure the customer’s waist and seat as normal. Measure the belowknee/above calf circumference and enter in the ‘bottoms’ box.
Tips:
Establish whether the customer is going to wear his socks underneath or ontop of the knee band and allow in the measure.
The width at the knee increases as the length of the breeks grows throughplus 2’s, 3’s, 4’s etc.
If customer is to be very active in this garment (climbing over styles etc) thena longer option should be advised to prevent the garment pulling up awayfrom the socks.

Measurements
Full Length
With the jacket on the customer measure from the bottom of the melton (cloth underthe collar) down along the centre back seam to the desired length of the jacket (orcoat). The figure you give will be what you get including figurations.
Lambton work to 1/2” sensitivity in this measurement.
Tips:
A good fitting, well-balanced jacket should be level around the bottom/hem with thefloor.
A jacket should reach the top of the leg, below the seat.
The length of a jacket is usually within 1” of the inside leg measurement.
Beware short or corpulent customers are often used to long jackets to the point wherethe correct length (top of the leg) may feel short to them.
Nape to waist/natural waist
This is an optional measurement for suits but mandatory for overcoats, morning coatsand evening tail coats. As for the full length above, measure from the bottom of themelton (cloth under the collar) down along the centre back to the point where the waistis narrowest. This is usually about l” to 2” above the trouser waist/belt or locateddirectly behind the naval.
© Lambton Tailoring
Measurements
Half Back
Measure from the centre back seam approximately 4” to 5” down from the collar acrossto the side seam close to where the sleeve seam joins the side body.
Lambton work to 1/8” sensitivity in this measurement.
Tips:
The half back measure dictates the shoulder width.
Too tight on the shoulders is far worse than too wide.
All men’s jackets require a little drape (loose cloth) around the back scye/hind arm toallow forward arm movement.
Linen, cotton & velvet have less natural stretch and are prone to shrinkage so Lambtonrecommend you give a little extra, compared to wool.
© Lambton Tailoring
Measurements
Shoulder Point to Shoulder Point.
Measure from the point at which the shoulder seam meets the shoulder end at thesleeve seam (T junction) at one side and run the tape horizontally across the back, below the collar, to the same point on the other side.
Lambton work to 1/4" sensitivity in this measurement.
Tips
This measurement will over-ride the half back measurement and thus the fit in thedrape/shoulder blade area will be dictated by this measurement.
Too tight on the shoulders is far worse than too wide.
Allow a little more width in cloths without natural stretch (cotton, velvet, corduroy andlinen).
© Lambton Tailoring
Measurements
Top Button Position.
This measurement for SB jackets and coats, will over-ride the normal button positiondictated by the standard pattern/measures. Turn the collar and lapel worn by the clientup. Take the tape end and place at the point where the collar under melton meets thetop of the centre back seem. Run the tape around the neck/crease and down theforepart over the chest to the position of the centre of the top button. If this is for a SB2, 3 or 4 we will reposition the lower buttons positions.
Tips
Beware of the resulting position of the bottom button and the size of the gap betweenthe bottom of the jacket and the lower button.
Pay attention to the lapel width which might need adjusting to compensate for lower orhigher buttons.
The higher the top button the more you may need to increase the chest measure asthe traditional button heights allow the jacket some 'spring' and therefore tolerate morebody movement when done up.
© Lambton Tailoring
Measurements
Crown to Cuff
With the metal end of your tape at the bottom, measure from the centre of the cuff upto the top of the crown (often where the shoulder seam joins the crown).
Lambton work to 1/4” sensitivity in this measurement.
Tips:
Sleeves often get wrinkled and creased, try and gently pull these out. Beware not toover stretch the cloth.
Customers either do or do not bother about showing cuff (traditionally about 1/2”)however, beware that most customer’s shirts sleeves vary considerably in length.
Lambton grade the cuff circumference to the chest size and sleeve length, however, this can be over ridden.
Linen, cotton & velvet have less natural stretch and are prone to shrinkage so Lambtonrecommend you give a little extra, compared to wool.

Measurements
Chest
Standing in front and slightly to the side of the customer ask him to raise his arms andrun your tape around the chest, high up into the arm pit, horizontal to the floor and overthe shoulder blades. Lower arms after positioning tape. This is a body measurementbut it should not be too tight. Most commonly, a couple of fingers worth of ease shouldbe allowed.
The over body allowance on the Classic/City block is 3 3/4” and is measured at thebase of scye (armhole). The over body allowance on the West End/Savile Row blockis 3 3/4” measured 1/2” down from the base of scye (armhole). The armhole is 1/2”shallower than the Classic/City block and the waist is 1” higher than the Classic/Cityblock.
Tips:
Lambton take full integers for chest measures so establish if the customer wants aclose fit or if he loads up his in breast pockets.
Tall and slim customers will often look better if you grade up the chest measure by aninch or two to create that waisted shape.
All measurements you give are net of figuration adjustments. So the measure you giveis what you get regardless of figurations.
© Lambton Tailoring
Measurements
Jacket WaistStanding in front and slightly to the side of the customer, run the tape around his waistabout 2” below the rib cage approximating to where the jacket is fastened (middlebutton on a SB3, top button on a SB2). This should be a body measurement with afinger or two of ease. The customer’s expectations of fit/shape should be establishedand the measure adjusted accordingly.
The over body allowance on the Classic/City block is 4”. The over body allowance onthe West End/Savile Row block is 31/2”.
Lambton work to 1/2” sensitivity in this measurement.
Tips:
Many men have ‘love handles’ (excess fat at the back, above the hips, often pushedup and out by the belt/waistband) which if prominent need to be accounted for in themeasure.
The jacket waist is usually about I” to 2” more than the trouser waist on a reasonablyregular shape.
With tall (often young) slim men, their true jacket waist is a lot less than the trouserwaist when measured on the hips. It can be a good idea to grade up the chest andwaist a bit to get the waisted shape. Otherwise, if you follow the real contours of thewaist the result is often so severe that the jacket gets caught on the hips. As a guide, make the waist measurement and inch, (or more) bigger than the trouser waist.
Half waist or Half girthThis is a finished jacket measure. Lambton will attempt to replicate your measurementand thus the look/shape of the customer’s current jacket. This is NOT an exact science.Button up the jacket, lay it down flat and measure across the waist at the point wherethe main waist fastening button(s) are located.
Lambton work to 1/2” sensitivity in this measurement.

Measurements
Jacket Seat
Instruct the customer to put his feet together. Standing at the customer’s side place thetape measure around the widest part of his seat/hips. The tape must run smoothly upand down, neither too loose nor too tight. The amount of flare or figure hugging can beadjusted with this measure.
Lambton work to 1” sensitivity in this measurement.
Tips:
Lambton take full integers for seat measures so establish if customer wants a close orloose fit in the jacket skirt.
Bulky objects in the pockets should be removed.
Ask the customer to fold his arms, merely to keep them out of the way.
Trouser Seat
This is often the same measurement as the jacket seat. The over body allowance onthe seat is 2”, (1” for close fit and 3” for easy) this is adjusted in the pattern for 1 pleat,2 pleats or unpleated trousers.
© Lambton Tailoring
Measurements
Trouser Waist
Place the tape around the part of the waist where the customer wishes to wear thetrousers. The measure you give is the measure they will be made to.
Lambton work to 1/2” sensitivity in this measurement.
Tips:
Ask the customer to put his fingers under the tape to assess the pressure.
Trouser waistbands do tend to stretch.
Customers often wish to be able to let the waist out or take in a little, this needsconsidering.
Customers who use a belt and pull it in tight to hold up slipping trousers will need thewaist measurement to reflect the belt size not the body size to avoid the waistbandrucking/gathering.
© Lambton Tailoring
Measurements
Outside leg
Ask the customer to position the waistband of his trousers at the level he wishes towear them - on, above or below the hips. Measure down along the outside leg seamto the desired length, including the waistband.
Lambton work to 1/2” sensitivity in this measurement.
Tip:
Adjusting the position of the waistband on the hips up or down will need acommensurate adjustment to the rise measurement (difference between the out legand inside leg measurement, sometimes also known as the fall).
© Lambton Tailoring
Measurements
Inside leg
EitherMeasure the customer with his trousers on. Hold the tape high up the inside leg at thefork, if the crutch position of these trousers is satisfactory. If the current trousers aretoo high or too low take this into account or ask him to pull them up/down to the desiredcrutch position. Then run the tape down the inside leg seam to the desired length.
Lambton work to 1/2” sensitivity in this measurement.
OrWith the preferred trousers laid flat, measure from the fork/crutch along the inside legseam to the bottom/desired length.
Tips:
Smooth them out but do not stretch.
Note: the inside leg measurement of jeans and trousers cut high into the crutch is oftenlonger than for a suit by around 1/2” to 1”.
Bottoms
Give the full circumference of the trouser bottom.
Tips:
As the width is made more and more narrow or wide the trouser length should beadjusted to the desired break on the shoe.
Ask the customer if they generally wear high cut (lace up) shoes or a low cut (loafer) style.
Men with particularly large or small feet can lessen the relative appearance of the footsize by cleverly adjusting the trouser bottom. Men with prominent calves should beadvised against having narrow width bottoms on their trousers as this makes themcatch and twist.
© Lambton Tailoring
Measurements
Waistcoat
For the chest and waist use the jacket measures/method.
Opening
Place the tape around the back of the neck, below the shirt collar and run it around thefront, bringing it together representing the desired opening. Take this measurementand divide by 2.
Tips:
Consider with the customer how much tie he wishes to show.
Consider the line of the jacket lapel (single breasted 1, 2, 3 or 4).
© Lambton Tailoring
Measurements
Front length
Place the end of the tape below the shirt collar at the centre (many shirts with a splityoke will have a seam at this point). Run the tape around the collar and then straightdown the chest, over the waist to the desired length.
Tips:
Consider where the trouser waistband sits or will sit. The waistcoat length should be1” to 2” below this point to avoid the shirt showing.
Consider whether the customer wants a pointed or straight bottomed waistcoat.

Figuration and Block Details
What to look for to give the cutter information about the body shape that thetape measure does not pick up.
Tips:
If the figuration/tell tale feature is not very obvious then leave it out.
More trouble can be caused by unnecessary or wrong figurations.
Body ‘deformities’ that require figurations are most obvious if the customer iswearing a ready to wear suit. A bespoke or made-to-measure garment maydisguise these features.
Short neck/square shoulders (high shoulders): SN.SQ.SH
Symptoms:Horizontal crease(s) running about 1” below the collar. The shirt collar is almost entirely covered by the jacket collar.Collar may stand away from the neck when the jacket is fastened. If creasing runs through to cross shoulder seams this is normally forwardshoulders as well.
Long neck/sloping shoulders: LN.SL.SH.
Symptoms:Too much back drape or fullness at back scye due to collapsing shoulderpads.Jacket collar sits low on neck or barely covers shirt collar.Breaking/collapsing in the chest area.
Head forward (dipped):HF
Symptoms:Jacket collar sitting low or away from shirt collar/neck.The jacket is short at the back at the bottom (if collar is positioned correctlyinto neck). The curve in the spine/back is at or near the top.
Round back (stooping): RB
Symptoms:Slight or severe hump in the middle back, both vertical or horizontal.Jacket appears short in the back and/or long in the front.Jacket collar may stand off neck.Fronts of jacket may fall away.
Easy Scye: E.SCY
Symptoms:Jacket armhole is tight creating creasing on the sleeve near the biceps.
© Lambton Tailoring
Erect (military stance): ERECT
Symptoms:Jacket short in front and /or long at the back.Too much fullness/drape at the back scye as shoulders are often thrown back.Tight over seat/vents pulling open (when jacket is fastened).Jacket fronts scissoring.
Full Chest (barrel chest): FC
Symptoms:Jacket short in front and /or long at the back.Too much fullness/drape at the back scye as shoulders are often thrown back.Tight over seat/vents pulling open (when jacket is fastened).Lapels bowing (when jacket is fastened).Tight around the sleeve/chest area (when jacket is fastened).Jacket fronts scissoring.
Sway Figure (slouching): SF
Symptoms:Hollow waist/forward hips with head forward.‘S’ shaped spine.Collar standing off neck.Jacket fronts tight from waist down.Jacket catching on hips/waist above vent when fastened.
Forward Pointing Shoulders: FPS
Symptoms:Shoulders curved forward like an inverted coat hanger.Tight on shoulder ends.Twisting/roping over shoulder seam.Hollows/dips in front below neck point.
Drop Shoulders: Drop L or Drop R
Symptoms:Most people drop on the right as they are right handed.Buttons and holes mis-aligned on the front.Bottoms of front of jacket mis-aligned.Fullness at the back scye/excess diagonal drape on the side with the drop.Breaking in chest on the side with the drop.

Jacket block/fit extras (please note in the comments box)
Big Sleeve Pattern: we have a big sleeve pattern for those with muscular/bigarms which gives a fuller sleeve, not just in the scye.
Sleeve Pitch: sleeves can be rotated forward and back. Please note theamount in inches compared to the standard pitch which should be half wayalong the pocket jet.
Semi-stout: this block variant kicks in automatically when the differencebetween the chest and the jacket waist is between 2” less than chest and 1”greater than chest. The cloth (about 10%) is redistributed around to the front. The front balance is 3/4” longer than normal fit pattern.
Corpulent: this block variant kicks in automatically when the jacket waist isgreater than chest by 1” or more. The cloth (about 12%) is redistributedaround to the front. The front balance is 3/4” longer than normal fit pattern.
Thick Through: this block variant overrides the semi-stout and corpulentvariants above to leave the cloth spread evenly around the back and front.
Trouser block/fit extras (please note in the comments box)
Low Fronts: where the trousers are worn under a prominent belly the frontcan be cut lower to improve the fit, especially for pleated trousers. Pleasenote in inches the amount required.
Drop Hip: specify the amount of drop and the side.
Prominent Seat: the seat is graded up by one inch.
Deep Pleats: a deep pleat pattern is available for a more continentalEuropean or American style trouser. The single deep pleat pattern is 1”bigger across the fronts, side seam to side seam at seat level, than standardsingle pleat trouser. The double deep pleat pattern is 2” bigger across thefronts, side seam to side seam at seat level, than standard double pleatpattern.
1 rear dart and 2 rear dart trousers: This kicks in automatically when thedifference between the waist and seat is greater than or equal to 9”
