Wine Advocate #193 Feb 2011 Antonio Galloni 94 pointsDrink: 2012 - 2027Maculan’s 2007 Torcolato emerges with burnished tones of orange peel, truffles, apricot jam and sweet dried herbs. 1955 TAYLOR FLADGATE Vintage Bottle £335.00 £285.00 £50.00The outstanding 1955 vintage produced this deep coloured port which is deep and high toned with a spicy nose. It is packed with fruit, extract and tannin. Drink now- 2010. Wine Enthusiast - "This bottle was at a lovely point in its life, balancing savory, mushroom and spice notes against sweet caramel and dried fruit flavors onthe long finish. Tannins resolved, potent alcohol totally concealed by the richness of the wine—there’s simply nothing out of place. Drink." Score: 95/100

1970 WARRE'S Vintage Bottle £94.95 £79.95 £15.00Warre’s Vintages are drawn from vineyards in the Rio Torto and Pinhão valleys of the Alto Douro where Warre’s have been making and buying wines from farmersfor centuries. In some of these Quintas the wine continues to be made by the time honoured traditional method of foot treading in granite “lagares” which producesfirst class Port. A substantial part of the final lote or blend came from Warre’s own Quinta da Cavadinha. This is Warre's 300th Anniversary port and is an excellentvintage which is developing into a wine as fine as the 1963. Very fine nose and balance. “…sweet, full-bodied, rich, almost too rich, yet not overpowering, with theperfect weight and balance I expect from Warre at its best” - Michael Broadbent, Vintage Wine, Published 2002 Five Stars (Outstanding).

2008 NIEPOORT 'Bioma' Vinha Velha' Vintage Bottle £49.95 £39.95 £10.00By introducing another premium Vintage Port to the Niepoort Portfolio, Bioma “Vinha Velha” provides us with the opportunity to create, or re-create, a style ofVintage Port which not only respects the terroir, but also harks back to a golden age of Port.Bioma is a single vineyard Vintage Port, rather than a single Quinta. For many years, this vineyard has provided the backbone of Niepoort Vintage Ports, but since2005, we have been able to study the qualities of this vineyard in greater detail, managing it in a organic way, and furthermore, identifying better, part of theremarkable wines made here for setting aside, as Bioma in 2008 and Pisca in 2007. The “Vinha Velha” refers to the extraordinary age of the vines at Vinha daPisca, mostly exceeding 80 years old.Our intention with Bioma “Vinha Velha” is to offer, in very small quantity a style of Vintage Port which is more akin to the very best English-bottled Vintage Ports of1970 and before. The exceptional fruit quality from the ancient vines of the Pisca Vineyard appears to express its sense of place quite wonderfully when we applythe ‘logic’ of older times.Brilliant dark red appearance with a refined, silky, vinous aroma and subdued fruit .Well structured on the palate with wonderful elegance and finesse ; mediumsweet with a lengthy finish. A superb example of the 2008 harvest.

NIEPOORT Tawny '30 Year Old' Bottle £109.95 £89.95 £20.00Tawnies with an age indication such as "30 years" are blended from different wines averaging 30 years. The prolonged ageing in small wooden casks confers thecharacteristic Tawny colour. The principle features of an aged tawny are the complexity of aromas, the freshness and a persistent bouquet and refinement. Afterdinner, 30 years old tawny is a good match with cheeses and chocolate based desserts. For the true lovers it can match perfectly with a good cigar or by itself as the company for the night. Serve at room temperature or lightly chilled, and drink it slowly, because it has a lot to discover.Deep brown colour with a brown rim and a touch of green - very characteristic in old tawny ports. On the nose a wine from another era, but very much alive with afabulous concentration of coffee and liqueur which comes through on the palate with great spirity finish.

OPUS ONE (Mondavi/Rothschild) 2006 Bottle £162.95 £139.95 £23.00ROBERT PARKER 94 points ''Not surprisingly, the 2006 is a bigger, more muscular, less charming effort displaying unbridled power, full-bodied richness, and notesof new saddleleather, black fruits, roasted herbs, and burning embers. Powerful and rich with sweet tannin, low acidity, and more structure and density than the 2005 as well asless nuance andcomplexity, the 2006 should be consumed over the next 15+ years.'

RIDGE VINEYARDS Lytton Springs(Zinfandel Petite Sirah & Carignane) 2008 MAGNUM £56.95 £47.95 £9.00This fine Zinfandel offers aromas of rich, black fruits imbued with exotic spice from new oak, followed by a firm, well structured palate of berries, with superbconcentration, firm acidityand fairly intense tannins. Allow this wine to develop over the next ten to fifteen years. ROBERT PARKER 91-93 points 'The 2008 Lytton Springs Proprietary Red, ablend of 74%Zinfandel, 21% Petite Sirah, and 5% Carignan, possesses a deep ruby/purple color and good acidity, and a more closed style than the Geyserville, with a firmer, more restrained overallpersonality. It should drink well for 7-8 years.

AustraliaBINDI Pinot Noir 'Composition' 2010 Bottle £36.95 £28.95 £8.00

The Composition Pinot Noir is based upon declassified grapes from the Original Vineyard planted in 1988 and grapes from the new Block K, planted in 2001. Theideal of this wine is to produce a delicious, perfumed, spicy harmonious, textured wine that is not as intense, complex nor ageworthy as our individual vineyardwines. Even when the outstanding Block K vines are older (and producing what we expect to be Bindi’s best fruit and therefore an individual wine from its bestparcels) we will continue to declassify sections or barrels from each vineyard and produce this wine.

PENFOLD'S 'Bin 389' Cabernet Shiraz 2008 Bottle £26.95 £19.95 £7.00With thick skins, royal purple in colour, and elegant flavours derived from ideal grape-growing conditions, cabernet sauvignon provides the structure and palatelength. Shiraz grapes, akin to small black pearls, provide the intensity, opulence and flesh.First made in 1960, Bin 389 has a reputation for consistency and longevity and has earned its well-deserved moniker, ‘baby Grange’, from time spent maturing inoak hogsheads used the previous vintage for Grange. This much-loved, beautifully consistent style shows all the hallmarks and benefits of cross-varietal blendingand for many wine drinkers, it is their preferred Penfolds wine.Bin 389 is an Australian Grand Vin; a selection and interpretation of the best parcels from the best vineyard sites, by a winemaking team steeped in the ethos andtradition of a great Australian wine style.

PENFOLD'S 'Bin 407' Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 Bottle £24.95 £18.75 £6.20With a couple of notable exceptions, quality cabernet sauvignon has only been widely available for a matter of decades. Many of these vineyards are entering themature phase of their productive life and there is now a rich source of high quality fruit for Penfolds winemakers to draw from. The objective with Bin 407 has always been to promote cabernet’s varietal character, in tandem with the Penfolds house style.Providing a lovely contrast to the more powerfully structured Bin 707, Bin 407 is a restrained and elegant cabernet sauvignon style with clear, varietalblack-currant/cassis aromas, fine-grained firm tannins and underlying cedar/savoury oak.

PENFOLD'S Cabernet Sauvignon 'Bin 707' 2008 Bottle £159.95 £119.95 £40.00Penfolds' finest expression of cabernet, justly ranked among Australia's best. Today, Bin 707 is justifiably regarded as one of Australia’s most important cabernets. The winemaking philosophy and barrel maturation of Bin 707 is almost identical to Grange. The Bin 707 style combines intense varietal definition with new Americanoak to produce wines of great richness, harmony and concentration. Bin 707 proudly bears the Penfolds stamp – displaying a fascinatingly complex marriage of ripe, concentrated cabernet fruit and 100% new American oak, forged together through partial barrel fermentation. It displays dark berried fruit, mocha and chocolateovertones, with warm spice notes. It will comfortably gain stature and complexity across more than two decades in the bottle.

PENFOLD'S Shiraz 'Grange' 2006 Bottle £249.95 £199.95 £50.00This is the icon, and Australia’s most famous fine wine, and with good reason. Anyone lucky enough to have tasted Grange at maturity (and this can be aforty-yearplus wine) will attest to the outstanding quality. Easily Australia’s first growth."Dark brooding berry notes, Kirsch liqueur and espresso bean notes on the nose. The palate follows through with similar characteristics as the nose - roastedespresso beans enrobed in dark chocolate - a breadth of fruit that is broad in mouthfeel yet reluctant to reveal more. Refined, classy tannins, great poise andbalance and long rich length. A "classic" well defined (not overblown) Grange." Berry Brothers & Rudd

PENFOLD'S Shiraz 'R.W.T.' 2008 Bottle £66.95 £49.95 £17.00Penfolds RWT Shiraz presents an admirable alternative to the multi-regional sourcing and American oak maturation that are hallmarks of Grange, expressinginstead, single-region Barossa Valley Shiraz matured only in French oak. The initials RWT stand for 'Red Winemaking Trial', the name given to the project internallywhen developmental work began in 1995. Naturally, now no longer a 'Trial'! RWT Shiraz was launched in May 2000 with the 1997 vintage. Its style is opulent andfleshy, contrasting with Grange, which is more muscular and assertive. RWT is made from fruit primarily selected for its aromatic qualities and fine texture rather thansheer intensity or power of flavour. The result is a wine that helps to redefine Barossa Shiraz at the highest quality level. Drink with duck, red curry 'ice cream', splitrice porridge, lychee, tamarind and pineapple.

PENFOLD'S Shiraz 'St. Henri' 2007 Bottle £44.95 £33.75 £11.20While Grange is now seen as the quintessential Australian wine, John Davoren's work with St. Henri is of equal importance. Indeed both these wines set newstandards for their day with St. Henri establishing an elegant, perfumed style based on fruit definition and maturation in old oak. Originally the wines were called'PENFOLDS St. Henri Claret', but since 1991, with the release of the 1989 vintage, St. Henri has been labelled varietally. Like Grange, the wines have always beenShiraz driven, with small varying percentages of Cabernet Sauvignon.Totally opaque, deep black purple colour, with deep black crimson hue. The nose displays lifted top notes of ripe blackberry and liquorice followed by some darkplum, confectionary and spice. Full bodied, the palate displays impressive richness, yet at the same time is quite elegant. Cellar 8-10 years (2019-2021) Alc 14.5%

France - BordeauxBARON DE BRANE 2nd Wine of Chateau Brane Cantenac 2em CC Margaux 2005 HALF £15.95 £11.95 £4.00

A ‘one in a life time’ vintage! As early as last spring, exceptional weather conditions were in place to give birth to a ‘grand’ wine. All the hopes nurtured earlier in theseason gradually materialized making the 2005 vintage of an astonishing quality. A beautiful story to unfold…Deep red with violet hues with intensely aromatic nosedominated by red fruit aromas, and fresh notes of menthol, flowers and liquorice. A supple ‘attack’ in the mouth and lots of freshness and concentration on thepalate afterwards. A well balanced wine with a long, generous finish which will definitely age well.

CHATEAU COS D'ESTOURNEL 2ieme Cru Classe Saint-Estephe 2002 Bottle/NC £94.50 £75.60 £18.90ROBERT PARKER 93 POINTS - "One of the candidates for wine of the vintage, this beauty has a dense purple color to the rim and a classic, noble nose of graphiteintermixed with black currant, spice box, licorice, and red and black fruits. Medium to full-bodied with exceptional precision and definition, this beautifully texturedwine stands out as one of the most successful wines of this irregular vintage. A brilliant effort, it should be at its best between 2008 and 2020."

CHATEAU DE VALANDRAUD Grand Cru Saint-Emilion 2001 Bottle £179.50 £149.95 £29.55ROBERT PARKER 94 points: "As hard as it may be to believe, Valandraud’s 2001 is better than their 2000. One of the great efforts from proprietors MurielleAndraud and Jean-Luc Thunevin, the 2001 Valandraud boasts a saturated plum/purple color as well as a sumptuously sweet nose of Varhona chocolate intertwinedwith espresso roast, blackberries, cherry jam, and currants. Full-bodied, opulent, voluptuously textured, pure, rich, and seriously endowed, this is a brilliant effortfrom Bordeaux’s leading revolutionary. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2020. By the way, the kosher cuvee of this wine merits 91-92 points. It is undeniably the finestkosher wine I have ever tasted."

CHATEAU HAUT-BRION Rouge 1ere Cru Classe Pessac-Leognan 1999 Bottle £399.50 £339.95 £59.55THE WINE ADVOCATE 93 points'Deep plum, currant, and mineral notes emerge from the concentrated, beautifully balanced, pure 1999 Haut Brion. It seems to be cut from the same mold as yearssuch as 1979 and 1985. There is a hint of graphite in the abundant fruit. The wine is medium to full-bodied, nuanced, subtle, deep, and provocatively elegant. It ismade in a style that only Haut Brion appears capable of achieving. The finish is extremely long, the tannins sweet, and the overall impression one of delicacyinterwoven with power and ripeness. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2025.'

CHATEAU LAFITE-ROTHSCHILD 1ere Grand Cru Classe Pauillac 2002 Bottle £599.95 £499.95 £100.00THE WINE ADVOCATE Robert Parker (OCT 2003) - 94-96 points - As I have indicated in the past, under the administration of Charles Chevalier, Lafite-Rothschildhas produced a tremendous succession of historic, possibly monumental wines since 1995. The 2002 will only add to Chevalier’s illustrious resume. Forty-sevenpercent of the crop made it into the grand vin, a blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9.5% Merlot, and 3.5% Cabernet Franc. It smells and tastes like liqueur of leadpencil intermixed with cassis and cherry jam. Opaque purple to the rim, relatively light on its feet, but super-concentrated and intense, it is reminiscent of alighter-weight 1996, a wine that merited a perfect score. More forward than the 1996, the 2002 is extraordinarily concentrated, riveting juice that has impeccableharmony. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2038

CHATEAU LAGRANGE 3ieme Cru Classe Saint-Julien 2002 HALF £21.95 £16.95 £5.00ROBERT PARKER The Wine Advocate (April 2005) 89 points ''Deep ruby/purple with considerable amounts of toasty new oak blasting out of the glass, this wine’sheavy-handed vanilla oakiness conceals its relatively extracted, rich, tannic flavors. It remains dumb and closed, but offers excellent depth, power, and richness. While there is plenty here, patience is required. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2020.'

CHATEAU LATOUR 1iere Grand Cru Classe Pauillac 1990 Bottle £795.00 £695.00 £100.00The 1990 Chateau Latour, which was voted Wine Spectator Wine of the year in 2003 was accorded a rating of 100pts by both Wine Spectator and Robert Parker, iePerfect!.The wine has an excellent nose, very complex, ultra smooth and fine tannins. CHATEAU LEOVILLE-LAS-CASES 2ieme Cru Saint-Julien 2006 Bottle £159.95 £129.95 £30.00ROBERT PARKER 93-95 'Perfectionist owner Jean-Hubert Delon believes the 2006 Leoville Las Cases recalls the greatness of the 1986 and 1996. The naturalalcohol came in at 13.3%, and only 40% of the production made it into the final blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14.5% Merlot, and a dollop of Cabernet Franc. This backward, deep ruby/purple-hued effort exhibits sweet, pure black cherry, raspberry, and cassis characteristics, soft, ripe tannin, and medium body. It reveals astrong similarity to its next door neighbor, Chateau Latour. The 2006 Las Cases will require 5-8 years of bottle age, and should drink well for 25-30 years.'DECANTER 5***** 'Intense colour, fragrant and smoky, masses of extract, almost Californian, but then wild violets and terroir expression come through, extraordinary richness of fruit yet perfect balance. 2015-40.'

CHATEAU MONTLAU Rouge 'Hors Serie' Bordeaux Superieur 2005/09 Bottle £24.95 £18.95 £6.00Owned by good friends Armand and Elizabeth Schuster de Ballwil, this stunning Château could not have wished for a better location. It is perched on a hill withspectacular views across the Dordogne River, Montlau is on the doorstep of the famous region of St-Emilion. We have been selling their wines for many many yearsnow and they produce a fantastic range of wines from their Cremant through to this Hors Series, their top red. Their son, Armand Jr has now taken over thewinemaking duties (we have known him since he was a baby) and is continuing the trend for making exceptional wines!Ripe black berries on the nose, partly dried cherries and plums, delicate spicy roasted notes. Juicy on the palate, clean, ripe fruit, slightly roasted oak, fairly creamy, quite fine, still youthful tannins, quite full-bodied, good persistence, has some depth. Good finish.

CHATEAU PICHON LALANDE 'Comtesse' 2ieme Cru Classe Pauillac 2004 Bottle £99.50 £77.95 £21.55Robert Parker 92 points - "The 2004 Pichon Lalande is a strong effort for the vintage (much better than their underwhelming and much more expensive 2005). Ablend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it exhibits a deep ruby/purple color as well as scents of cocoa, espresso roast, black cherries, and cassis. Medium to full-bodied, opulent, and fleshy, this classic wine cuts a stylistic persona somewhere between the 1995 and1996. It can be drunk now or cellared for two decades."

CHATEAU PONTET CANET 5ieme Cru Classe Pauillac 2006 MAGNUM £169.50 £139.95 £29.55ROBERT PARKER 93-95 'One can’t say enough about the extraordinary quality proprietor Alfred Tesseron has achieved at Pontet-Canet over the last decade. The2006 is another massive wine that may be as backward and concentrated as its nearby neighbor, Mouton Rothschild. Boasting a dense purple/black color inaddition to aromas of creme de cassis, incense, burning embers/charcoal, and pain grille, it is monstrous in the mouth with huge flavor concentration, extremely hightannins, and significant extract. Tesseron’s goal appears to be a 50+ year wine. The 2006 requires a decade of patience. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2040+.'DECANTER 4**** 'Intense colour, big concentration of blackcurrant fruit, very fresh and fragrant despite the concentration, very good length, still a bit four-square,but shows great depth of vineyard fruit. 2015-30.'

CHATEAU POTENSAC Cru Bourgeois 2001 HALF £13.95 £10.95 £3.00ROBERT PARKER The Wine Advocate (2004) ''Always impressively made by Jean-Hubert Delon (the proprietor of Leoville Las Cases and Nenin), Potensac’s 2001is an elegant, medium-bodied Medoc offering dried herb and berry fruit characteristics in an open-knit, attractively fruity, pure style. Restaurants should be buyingthis one by the case for their patrons to enjoy now and over the next 7-8 years.'

CHATEAU RAUZAN-SEGLA 2ieme Cru Classe Margaux 2008 Bottle £53.50 £42.95 £10.55ROBERT PARKER 91-93 points'This outstanding effort is atypically forward, sexy, and opulent. Only 45% of the crop made it into this blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. Yieldswere 47 hectoliters per hectare, which is slightly higher than some estates, but the harvest was very late, between October 2-21. Sweet cassis, black cherry, licorice, tobacco leaf, and spice box are all present in the complex aromatics. In the mouth, the wine offers generosity, roundness, sweetness, and velvety, ripe tannins. Iwas surprised by how forward, precocious, and delicious this wine has already become. It appears set for a relatively long life of 25+ years.'

LES ALLEES DE CANTEMERLE 2nd Wine of Ch. Cantemerle 5ieme Cru 2005 HALF £9.95 £7.50 £2.45Second wine of Chateau Cantemerle from the Haut Medoc region of Bordeaux. A ripe ad busy bouquet of bramble fruit, cedar and soft spice. The palate is mediumbodied with good fruit concentration and silky tannins.

SARGET DE GRUAUD-LAROSE 2nd Wine of Chat Gruaud-Larose 2004 HALF £12.95 £9.95 £3.00Gruaud Larose was classified as a 2nd Growth in the 1855 classification and still retains its position today as one of the leading lights in the St Julien appellation. Most of the top estates now produce a second wine but Gruaud was a pioneer in this field. With Sarget, the aim is to offer a wine which bears all the hallmarks of theGrand Vin but in a more approachable style which can be drunk young.

France - BurgundyBERNARD DUGAT-PY Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles-Vignes 2005 Bottle £79.95 £67.95 £12.00

PARKER 91 ‘Dugat’s micro-climatically diverse parcels of village Gevrey with vines 30-50 years of age inform his 2005 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes, whichhad just been bottled when I visited (whereas the other wines would be bottled in a month or more). Dugat says his sulfuring was as light as possible, and this wineis certainly not suffering in any obvious way. It boasts a wonderfully silky suppleness of texture, juicy and engaging black raspberry and pomegranate fruit character, and a finish featuring notes of game, forest floor, fruit skin tartness, and the bitter side of vanilla bean, but with more brightness, lift and exuberance than the firm anddarkly-shaded wines typical of this vintage. Not that this wine lacks for grip or visceral intensity. Sock some away for 8-10 years.’

COMTE GEORGES DE VOGUE Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru 2001 Bottle £199.95 £169.95 £30.00ROBERT PARKER 89-91 points 'Blackberries and a myriad of spices are found in the nose of the light to medium-bodied 2001 Bonnes Mares. Satin-textured andbroad shouldered on the attack, this wine reveals outstanding depth to its blackberry and blueberry-flavored character. Its dark fruit-laden finish displays a firm, woody tannin-laced characteristic. Drink it over the next 7 years. According to Francois Millet, this famed estate’s highly talented winemaker, 2001 was a vintage thatwished to produce high yields. Burgundy’s resident poet, Millet stated that “2001's fruit is its sensuality, the acidity is its conscience and soul.” While my pragmaticmind is incapable of understanding the meaning of his words, it is clear that Millet fashioned some of the finest red Burgundies produced in 2001.'

HENRI GOUGES Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru 'Clos des Porrets St George' 1999 Bottle £59.95 £49.95 £10.00Rating: 17/20 - As reviewed by Jancis Robinson. "Lively crimson. Slightly autumnal nose. Chunky, thick, dense but correct. Definitely for traditionalists rather thanmodernists."

LOUIS REMY Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes 'Les Fremieres' 1990 Bottle £59.95 £50.95 £9.00Domaine Louis Rémy in Burgundy has been managed by Chantal Rémy since 1988. The 3.5 hectare domaine can trace its antecedents back all the way to 1821.Chantal has continued the tradition of making gentle, not overtly powerful wines which nonetheless repay keeping, as well as holding back a proportion of theharvest so that the domaine can offer older vintages for sale.Their grands crus of Chambertin, Latricières-Chambertin and Clos de la Roche are supported by Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Derrière La Grange along with villageChambolle-Musigny Fremières and Morey St Denis Aux Cheseaux.

ROBERT ARNOUX Echezeaux Grand Cru 1998 Bottle £89.95 £76.95 £13.00Arnoux died in 1995, and since then this superb property has been run by his son-in-law, Pascal Lachaux. The holdings include grands crus RomanéeSt-Vivant and Echézeaux, and premiers crus Chaumes, Reignots, and Suchots. Lachaux pulls out all the stops, ageing the top wines in new oak, and bottlingwithout fining or filtration. This is quintessential Vosne: always rich, always stylish. And, one should add, always very expensive.

France - RhoneDOMAINE DU CAILLOU Chateauneuf-du-Pape 'Les Quartz' 2005 Bottle £44.95 £37.95 £7.00

ROBERT PARKER 93-95 points 'The 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Quartz again offers a liqueur of minerals, has firm tannins, great intensity, and an inkyruby/purple color to the rim, a wonderfully sweet nose of black raspberries, kirsch, licorice, with some smoke and a hint of pain grille. This superb wine hastremendous palate presence and great minerality and definition. Give it 2-3 years of cellaring and drink it over the following 15 or more years...'

DOMAINE DU VIEUX TELEGRAPHE Chateauneuf- -du-Pape 'La Crau' (Red) 2008 MAGNUM £74.50 £63.95 £10.55The Vieux Télégraphe is a beautiful deep ruby colour; the nose is very fresh, with notes of menthol. The palate is velvety, and mirrors the freshness that was evidenton the nose. The liquorice notes of the Grenache dominate the aromas at present. The richness and concentration of the wine is not as exuberant as the 2005 and2007 vintages, but the wine is well balanced and smooth. The tannins are harmonious and ripe, and the finish is tight and elegant. It could be compared with 2006.'DANIEL BRUNIER This wine will evolve for 7-10 years.

Italy - PiedmontLUCIANO SANDRONE Barolo Cannubi Boschis 2005 Bottle £84.95 £71.95 £13.00

ROBERT PARKER 95 pointsSandrone’s 2005 Barolo Cannubi Boschis offers up pretty notes of mint, flowers, spices and dark red berries, with sweet notes of French oak that linger on the finish. This is a decidedly slender Cannubi Boschis that lacks some of the sheer pedigree and explosiveness of the best vintages. The tannins need some time to soften, but this is a wine that has continued to grow in bottle. It could very well turn out to be one of the vintage’s surprises. In 2005 the harvest took place at the end ofSeptember and the wine was aged in 500-liter barrels (one-third new). Anticipated maturity: 2011-2020.

Italy - TuscanyANTINORI Guado al Tasso 2007 Bottle/NC £69.95 £59.95 £10.00

THE WINE ADVOCATE Robert Parker 94 points'The 2007 Guado al Tasso screams of Bolgheri. Sweet grilled herbs, mocha, spices and black cherry jam are woven into a generous, expansive frame. There is awonderful sense of richness and warmth to the fruit that carries through to the round harmonious finish, where clean, minerally notes add freshness. This is simplygorgeous today, but it is young, and the oak needs to integrate. Still, it is impossible not to admire the 2007 Guado al Tasso. In 2007 Guado al Tasso is 65%Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. The late ripening Cabernet Franc, used in place of Syrah for the first time in 2007, adds a measure offreshness that had often been missing in previous vintages. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2024.'

EDOARDO VALENTINI Montepulciano d'Abruzz 2001 Bottle £129.95 £109.95 £20.00ROBERT PARKER 'Valentini is one of Italy’s most iconic producers. Tiny production, fabulous reputation and limited distribution means the wines are very wellknown and fiercely sought by cognoscenti but otherwise virtually unknown, at least in this country. Fortunately, it looks like that is about to change now that theestate has taken on new US representation. Valentini’s Montepulciano is a magnificent wine that has a track record of aging beautifully for 25 years or more after thevintage. Production is just 4,000 bottles per year and the wine is expensive, but it is also incredibly unique. Readers who can find these wines and have the patienceto cellar them (except the Cerasuolo) are in for a treat.'

PortugalNIEPOORT Doda (Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz) 2008 Bottle £39.95 £33.95 £6.00

The first year Doda (called Dado until 2004) was produced was in 2000, based in a old idea of Rolf Niepoort: “The best Portuguese wine will be the one thatcombines the elegance, freshness and ageing capacity of the Dão region with the structure, power and concentration of Douro Valley, the one that combines thefruit from the schist soils of Douro with the pine needles and mineral notes of the granite soils of Dão”.It was with this idea in mind that Dirk contacted for the first time Alvaro de Castro, with the aim of joining two wines, one from each region, in similar proportions, insearch of the perfect balance. Dark in colour, very complex aroma, full of fresh red fruit notes combined with spicy, earthy, balsamic pine needles and subtle floralaromas. The palate shows great freshness plenty of fruit and mineral flavors with an impressive balanced structure and integrated tannins, great complexity. Longand persistent, with great ageing potential.

Gorgeous black fruit nose with violets, some black pepper and smokiness. Ripe and sweet raspberry and dark fruits with a gooddash of spice. Terrific elegance to this with a hugely pleasurable and lingering finish. This can be drunk now but will continue to develop into a blockbuster if left inthe cellar for a few years. SpainBODEGAS VINICOLA REAL '200 Monges' Rioja Reserva 2005 Bottle £39.95 £33.95 £6.00

"The 2005 200 Monges Reserva is a blend of 85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano, and 5% Mazuelo that spent 20 months in French and American oak before bottlingwithout filtration. A glass-coating opaque purple color, it reveals a brooding bouquet of earthy minerals, exotic spices, lavender, licorice, black cherry, and blackberry.Dense, layered, and powerful in the style of the outstanding 2005 vintage, it will reward another 6-8 years of cellaring and provide a drinking window extendingthrough 2030." 94 Points, Jay Miller - eRobertParker.com.

LA RIOJA ALTA Rioja Gran Reserva '890' 1995 Bottle £94.95 £79.95 £15.00Made predominantly from the Tempranillo grape (85%) with small quantities of Graciano and Mazuelo this elegant wine is only made in the very best vintages aftera very strict grape selection. It is a velvety wine that spends 8 years in cask and 6 years in bottle before being released.THE WINE ADVOCATE Robert Parker#202 (Aug 2012) Neal Martin - 96 pointsTasted twice, the 1995 Gran Reserva 890 is a blend of 95% Tempranillo (from Brinas, Labastida and Villaba), 3% Graciano and 1% Mazuelo, all aged in Americanoak for six years and delivering a headache-avoiding 12.7% alcohol. It has a heavenly bouquet that soars from the glass with soy, marmalade, a touch of Sevilleorange marmalade and cloves, all with superb delineation. The palate is very well-balanced with crisp, finely-tuned tannins that lend it wonderful focus. One can findvivacious flavors of strawberry, orange sorbet and citrus lemon while the finish is incredibly youthful and displays a level of tension that Alfred Hitchcock would beproud of. Outstanding traditional Rioja pulled out from the top drawer. Why? Because it whisks the drinker from wherever they are to, where the wine was born.Drink now-2030+

The nose is distinctly earthy with notes of loam, forest floor, leather andtobacco leaf complimenting intense fruit aromas of crushed cherries, raspberry compote and plums. BINDI Chardonnay 'Composition' 2010 Bottle £33.95 £28.95 £5.00An intense, mineral wine fully ripe but lean, taught and intense with savory, creamy elements. Fragrant notes of orange blossom, nectarine stone, spice and subtlenuttiness are usual with a vibrant, tight, long palate highlighted by clean acidity, wonderful texture and fine length.

The Composition Chardonnay is grown in a 1.5 hectare plot. The wine is fermented in French barrels of which typically 20% are new. Some barrels are inoculatedwith cultured yeast; others are fermented without yeast addition. The fermented wine is lees stirred every week over winter and the wine is given around one quartermalo-lactic conversion. France - BurgundyBALLOT-MILLOT Meursault 1er Cru 'Les Charmes' 2009 Bottle £49.95 £41.95 £8.00

The fruit Charles Ballot uses for this wine comes from a parcel of ""Les Charmes du Dessus"", on the Puligny side of the village. The wine displays very ripe flavours, mostly peach with a little tropical fruit, but still with a fresh acidity that balances out the ripeness. Very seductive for early drinking.

CHRISTIAN MOREAU Chablis Grand Cru 'Les Clos' 2009 Bottle (not Hospices) £38.95 £32.95 £6.00Moderate wood influence that should integrate quickly still allows the white flower, spiced pear and citrus-infused aromas to shine. White flowers with white and yellow fruit. Belle Epoque's multiple aromas are a symphony of charm and elegance. The 2002 vintage is delicate and intense, reflecting the characteristic House style: a perfect expression of Chardonnays from Cramant and Pinot Noirs from Mailly, with a subtle touch of Pinot Meunier thatendows the wine with balance and harmony. A floral and stylish, subtle and rich wine with an elegant long finish. The ultimate Perrier-Jouet style. The bottle, anadmirable work of art in itself was created by Emile Gallé in 1902.

France - LoireDIDIER DAGUENEAU Blanc Fume 2008/09 Bottle £41.95 £35.65 £6.30

THE WINE ADVOCATE (2010) 91-92+ points'There is as usual nothing mundane about the “basic” Dagueneau cuvee, the estate’s 2009 Blanc Fume de Pouilly. This is the sole cuvee at its address to blendacross two soil types – Marne chalk and silex – as well as across several far-flung parcels, some of which were hailed on this year, and the parts had not yet beenassembled for this 2009 when I tasted in June, so I offer only a composite impression. Smoky red currant, lime, and nettle display an aromatic pungency thatcoincides with a bright, energetic, silken-textured, very pure palate impression. White peach and wafting florality are conveyed by the (in this vintage, one-third)Marne chalk portion. The suffusion of chalk here is as usual impressive without in any way blocking the mouth-watering flow of fruit, and the same can be said as faras the influence of wood is concerned. This finishes with vibratory intensity and ringing clarity, as though it had been grown in a vintage from which nobody else inthe region got to make wine. Expect it to be worth following for at least 6-8 years.'

DIDIER DAGUENEAU Pouilly-Fume 'Pur Sang' 2009 Bottle £54.95 £46.50 £8.45THE WINE ADVOCATE (2010) 92-93+ points'Based primarily on fruit from a relatively clay-rich site in Saint Laurent, the Dagueneau 2009 Blanc Fume de Pouilly Pur Sang smells deliciously of elder flower whitepeach, and cassis. Vividly peachy and with rock-licking minerality, in the mouth this could be mistaken for a great Riesling. Nettle and grapefruit lend brightness in along, luscious, vibrant finish that also incorporates rich, saline oyster liqueur and oyster meat-like elements. This is going to be both accessible and at the same timeworthy of careful attention to its nuances over the coming decade or so.'

DIDIER DAGUENEAU Pouilly-Fume 'Silex' 2009 Bottle £74.95 £63.50 £11.45THE WINE ADVOCATE (2011) 93-94+'From an enclave just outside the cuverie in Saint Andelain, the Dagueneau 2009 Blanc Fume de Pouilly Silex delivers an almost inordinate diversity of floral, herbal, citrus (predominately grapefruit), and pit-fruit (predominately nectarine) elements, with the bitterness of fruit pits, smoky pungency of red currant and crushed stone,as well as notes of shrimp shell reduction and iodine inflecting a long, bittersweet, yet at the same time vibrant, buoyant finish. This silken textured seducer shouldgain with time in bottle and be worth following for ten or a dozen years.'

France - RhoneDOMAINE DU VIEUX TELEGRAPHE Chateauneuf- du-Pape Blanc 'La Crau' 2009 Bottle £36.95 £31.95 £5.00

A great success, this unoaked cuvee is made from 40% Clairette, 30% Grenache Blanc, the balance shared between Bourboulenc and Roussanne. A complexwine, which effortlessly juxtaposes the citric and the honied ,then adds a note of nutty richness for good measure. Very complete and satisfying en bouche.ROBERT PARKER (2004) 91 points 'One of the finest white Vieux Telegraphes in recent years is the 2003. A brilliant offering that sees no new oak, it offers superbhoneyed citrus intermixed with floral and tropical fruit characteristics in a medium to full-bodied, fresh, substantial style. There are 2,000 cases of the 2003, one ofthe largest productions of an estate bottled white Chateauneuf du Pape. Drink this knock-out white wine over the next 2-3 years.'

ItalyEDOARDO VALENTINI Trebbiano D'Abruzzo 2003 Bottle £44.95 £37.95 £7.00

This Trebbiano d’Abruzzo reveals compelling notes of earthiness, smoke, spices, honey and ripe peaches and apricots. It offers outstanding length and richness onthe palate with finessed tannins and a sweet, resonating finish. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2014.Valentini is among the handful of producers who continues to make his wines in a rigorously traditional, artisan fashion. Sadly Edoardo Valentini passed away in2006, but his son Francesco continues to run this small property. The estate’s wines have attained a cult status among wine lovers and can be hard to find, not tomention very expensive. At their finest, they offer a very personal expression of Trebbiano and Montepulciano from Abruzzo although bottle variation can be anissue.
