Intricate gold scroll work surrounds center. Cameo carving very well done with much attention to detail. Signature of unknown maker etched on the back.

Marriage of the Virgin was completed by Italian Renaissance artist Raphael in 1504. The scene depicts the marriage of Mary and Joseph with a priest in the foreground. A temple sits in the background, which was created by Raphael, taking inspiration from the Temple of St. Peter in Montecitorio built by famous Italian Renaissance architect Bramante. In the painting, Joseph is holding a blooming staff, which is a symbol that he is the chosen one for Mary. The Bramante-inspired temple in the background played an integral part in the formation of the figures in the foreground. The temple stands as a focal point of Raphael’s piece, and altogether the temple and arranged figures in the foreground form a circular pattern in Rafael’s masterpiece.

Art Smith (1917-1982) Arthur Smith was born to Jamaican parents in Cuba in 1917. His family settled in Brooklyn in 1920 and Smith showed artistic talent as early as grade school. This eventually earned him a scholarship to Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, where he was one of only a handful of black students.After graduating in 1940, Smith took a night course in jewelry making at New York University and became friends with Winifred Mason, a black jewelry designer who became his mentor. Smith became her full time assistant in her small Greenwich Village shop.In 1946 Smith opened his own studio and shop on Cornelia Street in the village where he suffered racial violence from some of his neighbors. He moved to 140 West Fourth Street just half a block from Washington Square park, the heart of Greenwich Village where as an openly gay black artist he felt more at home. The new store was better located, and Smith’s career began to take off. In addition to selling from this new location, he started to sell his wares to craft stores in Boston, San Francisco, and Chicago, and by the mid-1950’s he had business relationships with Bloomingdale’s and Milton Heffing in Manhattan, James Boutique in Houston, L’Unique in Minneapolis, and Black Tulip in Dallas.Tally Beatty, a young black dancer and choreographer, introduced Smith to the dance world “salon” of Frank and Dorcas Neal, where he became acquainted with some of the city’s leading black artists including writer James Baldwin, composer and pianist Billy Strayhorn, singers Lena Horne and Harry Belfonte, actor Brock Peters, and expressionist painter Charles Sebree. Through Beatty, Smith also began to design jewelry for several avant-garde black dance companies, including, in addition to Beatty’s own, those of Pearl Primus and Claude Marchant. These commissions encouraged him to design on a grander scale than he might otherwise have done, and the theatricality of many of his larger pieces may well reflect this experience.In 1969 he was honored with a one-man exhibition at New York’s Museum of Contemporary Crafts (now the Museum of Art and Design), and in 1970 he was included in Objects: USA. After his death 3 major exhibits were organized celebrating his work; “Arthur Smith A Jeweler’s Retrospective” at the Jamaica Arts Center in Queens NY, 1990, “Sculpture to Wear; Art Smith and his Contemporaries”, at the Gansevoort Gallery, NYC, 1998, and “From the Village to Vogue” at the Brooklyn Museum., 2008. Smith had had a heart attack in the 1960s, and by the late 1970s his health had declined. Ib Bluitgen trained as a silversmith at the Georg Jensen Silversmithy and was awarded a silver medal, the top honor. He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, School of Sculpture from 1945 to 1948 and worked in the Georg Jensen Silversmithy design department from 1948 to 1962, becoming head of that department in 1950. His designs were very clean and modern. Bluitgen opened his own studio in 1961 and was one of the founders of the Danish Crafts Council. He was an active member in the group Danish Silversmiths which holds exhibitions of their work throughout the world.

(a) Buyer’s Premium for “Antique and Modern Firearms” auctions; the Auctioneer will collect and retain from the Buyer, as additional commission, a premium equal to 17.5% the Sale Price of each Lot up to and including $200,000, plus 10% of the amount by which the Sale Price exceeds $200,000. (b) Buyer’s Premium for “Fine and Decorative Art”, “Modern Ceramics”, “American Indian and Western Art”, “American History”, “Fine Jewelry and Timepieces” , “World at War” and any other specialized auctions; the Auctioneer will collect and retain from the Buyer, as additional commission, a premium equal to 20% the Sale Price of each Lot up to and including $200,000, plus 10% of the amount by which the Sale Price exceeds $200,000. Presale estimates are intended to be guides and may or may not reflect the ultimate hammer price of a lot. Cowan’s retains the right to change estimates on any lot up to time of sale. A reserve is a confidential minimum price agreed upon by the seller of the lot and Cowan’s. In the case of reserved lots, the seller has authorized Cowan’s to bid on seller’s behalf until the reserve price is reached. In no case will the reserve be higher than the low presale estimate. Cowan’s standard house reserve on all property at auction is one-half of the low estimate.6) WARRANTIES AND DISCLAIMERS. Cowan’s makes a limited warranty only to the original buyer of record concerning the authenticity of each lot for a period of 14 days after bidder’s receipt of the purchased lot. If a buyer is not satisfied that the lot purchased is genuine, the buyer may, at his or her own expense, obtain the opinion of two mutually agreed upon recognized experts in the field of the disputed lot. If these experts determine that the item is not genuine, the buyer’s sole and exclusive remedy shall be the rescission of the sale and refund of the amount paid for the item. It is specifically understood and agreed that the rescission of the sale and refund is exclusive and in lieu of any other remedy which might otherwise be available as a matter of law or in equity, and such remedy is conditioned upon the buyer returning the property in the same condition as at the time of sale. Cowan’s does not warrant the condition of any item. Buyers interested in the condition of an item are encouraged to contact Cowan’s and, to the best of our ability, we will document for the prospective bidder the condition status on any lot. Cowan’s will not ship any package containing a firearm to any location other than within the United States. Buyers outside the United States must make their own shipping arrangements taking full risk for the transportation of any firearm.Property made of or containing certain plant or animal materials, such as coral, crocodile, ivory, whalebone, baleen, tortoiseshell, etc., may require a license or certificate before exportation from the United States and importation to another country. If you are purchasing items that contain these materials, you need to check the government wildlife import requirements in the countries from which and to which the item is being shipped prior to bidding. Since the export and import licenses are independently issued by the countries of origin and destination, obtaining one does not guarantee that you can obtain the other. Purchasers are responsible for making timely payments on items won at auction, even if a license is delayed or denied.17) SHIPPING CHARGES. Buyers are required to pay for all packing, shipping and insurance charges. Overseas duty charges are the responsibility of the successful bidder. Be aware that for larger and/or valuable items, shipping charges can be substantial.18) REMOVAL AND STORAGE OF PROPERTY. If purchased property has not been removed, or Cowan’s has not received shipping instructions within 21 days after the auction date, a $10 per item per day storage fee may be charged to the buyer.19) CANCELLATION OF SALE. If purchased property remains in the custody of Cowan’s for a period of 60 days following the auction, Cowan’s may, at its option, cancel the sale, retaining as liquidated damages any payments made by the buyer, or resell the property at auction or by any other commercially reasonable means, for the account and at the risk of the buyer, and in such event, buyer shall be liable for the payment of all deficiencies plus all of Cowan’s costs, including but not limited to storage and costs of both sales.
