Lot: 1773FRANCESCO RENALDI (1755-c.1799) A CELLIST AND ABASSOONIST Oil on canvas, framed oval 49.5 x 58cm. Thishas been identified as the work of the little known Englishpainter with Italian heritage, Francesco Renaldi (1755-c.1799). Renaldi entered the Royal Academy schools aged 21 and thentravelled extensively in Italy with Thomas Jones but had settledback in London by 1783. Renaldi's portrait of the Jones familyis in the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff. The artist thentried to establish himself as a portrait painter in Lincoln's InnFields but the market was commercially congested and so heapplied to work for the East India Company in Bengal. Renaldiarrived in Calcutta on the Hillsborough in 1786 where he metmore celebrated British artists such as Johann Zoffany, WilliamHodges and Tilly Kettle. Renaldi lived and worked in Calcutta,Lucknow and Dacca and built up a small practice but, upon hisreturn to England in 1796, he vanished from the artistic scenewithin two years. His known works are rare and it seemsprobable that they are have been incorrectly ascribed to otherhands; indeed, this picture was once thought to be by Zoffanyhimself. Music features regularly in Renaldi's work. It has even

been noted that the cellist in this picture is playing an unusualand technically difficult high note. The picture was almostcertainly painted in England in the 1780's. It thus predatesRenaldi's excursion to India. ++ Old lining; some scatteredretouching; needs a light clean Estimate: £6,000.00 - £8,000.00

Lot: 1859GERALD MOIRA, VPRWS (1867-1959) FERRETING Signedand dated 1912 (sic), oil on canvas, unframed 98.5 x 95.5cm.Exhibited: London, The Royal Academy, 1921, no.354 * Thescene depicts the artist's wife, Alice, with two of their four sons,Alex and John. Literature: Harold Watkins, The Art of GeraldMoira (London, 1922), p.32: "Three great boulders that tell theage-long geologic story of Nature take their important places onthe canvas. One of these, only partly seen, forms a natural seatfor a mother. Lolling negligently against a second, that rears upin the centre, a purple-sweatered, healthy boy of ten or so takesa lazy, nonchalant interest in the business of the sport.Beneath, a brown-smocked, dark-haired lad, hands upraised, awaits the exit, from a dark hole below the boulder, of the ferret- and the rabbit. Already two of the furry animals have fallenvictims to the game. Their still bodies lie beside the orifice, presently to be joined by yet others. The mother of the boys[Watkins never acknowledges that this is the artist's wife andsons], clad in a fur-edged yellow jumper and a mauve-linedskirt, looks interestedly on." Moira liked this theme of familydomesticity in a dramatic landscape and revisited the idea inworks such as "The Blue Carpet" (1917) where a mother isshown picnicking with her children amongst wild flowers in arocky landscape and also in "A July Day" (1915) where cliffsand rock stacks gather around a contented summery beachscene with women and a child. ++ A few scattered flakedlosses; puncture left of centre; needs a cleanEstimate: £1,500.00 - £2,000.00

However, afterhis move to Paris in 1921 and his encounters with Picasso andJean Cocteau, Wood adopted their fluent economy of line. Lot: 1895PRUNELLA CLOUGH (1919-1999) STILL LIFE Signed, oil onboard 21.5 x 25.25cm. * Clough liked to produce "paintings thatsay a small thing rather edgily." In particular, a sense ofdetachment from her subjects invests her work with ametaphysical nuance. Apollo magazine noted that "she has theability to extract the quintessence from a secret experience"and that she conveys it by "the tension of significantjuxtaposition with poetic insight". ++ Chipped at extreme lowerright corner; a very few scattered minor chipped losseselsewhere; needs a cleanEstimate: £2,000.00 - £3,000.00

Lot: 1896PRUNELLA CLOUGH (1919-1999) WALL AND BUSH, 1964Signed, oil on canvas 39.5 x 29cm. * Clough's landscape worksfrom the mid-1960's often have a hard-edged urbanatmosphere. Her use of ambiguous space, in which forms floatwith paradoxically weightless volume, is further enhanced by avariety of techniques applied to the picture plane. She used thinfilms of oil, sometimes wiped, scrubbed or incised. AlthoughClough's subjects were derived from her own visual experience, they manage to remain devoid of sentiment as they overflowwith feeling. Isobel Johnstone, writing a review of Clough's workfor the Arts Council, observed that "most of her [Clough's]works from the 1960's .. are more expansive in theirabstraction, with background forms often spreading across thesurface and the main element becoming more elusive." ++Needs a cleanEstimate: £5,000.00 - £7,000.00

Lot: 1897JOHN WILLIAM GODWARD (1861-1922) SUMMERIDLENESS: DAY DREAMS Signed and dated J. W. Godward1909, oil on canvas 50 x 75cm. Provenance: Frank Bush, bywhom sold at Christies, London, 2nd April 1937, lot 50, 69.6s.;bt. Messrs. Vicars Brothers, London; with Harrods, London,1957, bt. by mother of owner for £100 Literature: Forman ofNottingham copyrighted a chromolithograph of this subject,c.1910, entitled `Summer Idleness`. Swanson states that therewere `numerous prints made after Godward's work at this time`.Vern Swanson will include this picture is a forthcoming enlargededition of John William Godward: The Eclipse of Classicism(Woodbridge, 1997) in which this work is currently recorded asitem 17 for the year 1909 Since 1937, this subject has beenknown to scholars only from the above mentioned print. In acommunication with Lawrences in August 2012, Swanson wasable to examine the colours with greater accuracy than the printallowed. He notes that it is "much more delicate and elegant"and adds that he believes it to be "one of the most sensitivelycoloured paintings in Godward's oeuvre." Biography Godwardwas born into a conservative middle class London family in1861. They strongly opposed his wish to pursue a career in artbut Godward probably began working under the artist WilliamClarke Wontner (1857-1930), perfecting a technique for thepainting of marble that was to become a trademark. There arescant references to any other formal training but his "YellowTurban" was accepted at the Royal Academy in 1887 andechoed the style of artists such as Leighton and Alma-Tademawhose fondness for Classical subject matter had prevailed forover two decades. Godward moved from Wimbledon to BoltonStudios in Kensington and enjoyed sustained success at theRoyal Academy for nearly twenty years, showing twenty onepictures in total. However, with the advent of Modernism,Godward's style appeared even more historical and old-fashioned. He withdrew from exhibiting as his critical acclaimdiminished and sold his works only through agents and a fewdealers. He continued to paint for pleasure, disdaining the rapidchanges in direction that art was taking in the Edwardian era. Godward's work is notable for its remarkable luminosity ofcolour achieved by his diligent use of very thin translucentglazes. His works have neither obtrusive narrative content norany moralizing references. Rather, the atmosphere is one ofserene contentment with subtle blendings of form, colour andsuperlative technical expertise. There is invariably a Vermeer-like stillness in his pictures: this carefully considered lack ofmovement removes any narrative drive. We are left to ponderupon the girl's thoughts and, in so doing, share a little of hercontemplative ease. Godward's models became morevoluptuous and the artist's love of luxuriant flesh antagonisedhis family still further. His mother never forgave her son for hisbreach of conduct when he started living with a favoured model.Sadly, the artist became estranged from his own family and, facing a real world that could never match the idyllic perfectionof his subjects, he fell into bouts of deep depression. Godwardtook his own life in 1922 at the age of 61. This heaped yet moreshame upon his relatives who destroyed all of Godward'spapers. Moreover, it is said that John's face was cut out offamily photographs in later years. Scarcely a single photographof him remains. "The Victorian vision of antiquity was a deeplyromantic one; they looked back wistfully to the past as a goldenage, far simpler, nobler and more inspiring than their own. Theirart was an expression of a desire to escape from the ugliness, materialism and industrialism of their own age. Victorians werethe spiritual heirs of the Romantic movement, and theclassicism that they created can certainly be defined as`romantic classicism`."
