LET IT SNOW

Actor-director Sylvester Stallone has purchased a stunning commemorative piece by the unstoppable Todd White. ‘Bar Tales’ was created to mark the 70th anniversary of the landmark film ‘The Wizard of Oz’, and the painting was the keynote work at the ‘Inspirations of Oz’ Fine Art Collection exhibited in Miami as part of the anniversary celebrations. Oscar-winner Stallone, known the world over for his blockbuster movie roles, has long been a fan of Todd’s work. He has been well-known as an art collector internationally for over two decades now, snapping up pieces by Colombian painter Fernando Botero amongst others. In collecting Todd’s work, he joins fellow Hollywood actors, while continuing a boxing-related collector theme after world heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko visited Todd in his studio this year.

For Todd, Stallone has long been an influence. “Like pretty much everyone else of my generation, Sylvester Stallone is a huge, larger-than-life character whose work has really influenced our culture,” he says. “His portrayal of Vietnam veteran John Rambo and his career-defining role as Rocky Balboa in 1976 produced flawed, nuanced heroes for our time, and you just can’t help but be influenced by such performances.”Todd has plans to join forces with Stallone on future works - watch this space!

Four of the most exciting artistic voices at work in the UK have come together to create this beautiful collection of artwork inspired by the wonder of winter. From iconic cityscapes to animated wildlife scenes, each has responded in their own unique style to create some artwork to remember, and we are delighted to include a brand new collector’s book to treasure from the inimitable Doug Hyde.

OLYMPIC Dreams...It never stops for Darren Baker. The man of the hour has just been at yet another black tie event in his capacity as Olympic artist. The British Olympics Ball was hosted by Stephen Fry and Miranda Hart and the guest list included royalty, celebrities and of course 140 Olympic medallists. Darren donated a portrait of Kelly Holmes to the auction for the British athletes and the event raised over £700,000 for Team GB.

His new collection has been lovingly

composed over a period of several

years and includes six beautiful limited

editions, some inspirational original

pastels and a fabulous new collectable

hardback book combining fine art and

folk tale. The Lost Reindeer

introduces us to a cast of characters

we have not seen before, yet we find

ourselves immediately amongst friends.

“My characters grew out of a combination of knowledge and imagination. From the polar bear which is the world’s largest land predator to the starling-sized little auk, these are all creatures with an amazing survival instinct who adapt to living in complete winter darkness as well as to a summer with constant daylight over the course of an Arctic year. The artist in me believes that within their extraordinary lives, in this world so far removed from our own, there must be secrets and mysteries that we have not yet uncovered.”

ICE KINGThis winter Doug Hyde invites us to join him on a magical journey through a luminous world of ice, snow and miracles.

It includes the artist’s take on the simple story of one complete cycle of an Arctic day seen through the eyes of a small reindeer that has lost its way.

gary Benfield is one of the most renowned contemporary artists at work in the UK. His bewitching wildlife portraits set the latent energy and charm of the animal kingdom against a backdrop of soft sepia tones to create a sense of animation combined with intimate serenity. Gary’s work is spontaneous, with rapidly drawn lines and dashes of colour and this adds to the sense of movement, as his figures seem about to start running across the canvas. It is also characterised by a strong sense of context and the setting is often markedly seasonal. Here the small brown figure stands out against the whites of the scudding

clouds and a snow-covered meadow, clearly alert and poised to take on the winter landscape. The hare painted in its natural habitat is a classic image of rural life, and Gary uses it to portray an enchanting world of freedom and spaciousness within the countryside.

...We now have some of the world’s most collectable artists on show in the gallery. While talent, creativity and artistic integrity are clearly more important than celebrity collectors, it can be interesting to know that your favourite artwork is also on the walls of some of the most famous names showbiz, sport and politics.

Take Fabian Perez for example, whose admirers range from sporting superstars including Sugar Ray Leonard, Shaquille O’Neal and Lionel Messi, to Grammy Award winning rock star Scott Weiland, singer Shakira, and actors Micky Rourke and Megan Fox. Then there’s Todd White, who takes us from rap artists to catwalk models, with P Diddy, Sharon Stone, Catherine Zeta Jones, Vin Diesel, Hugh Hefner, Abbey Clancy and David Dunn numbering amongst his collectors. Meanwhile, Doug Hyde’s work recently appeared on a BBC documentary in the home of golfing hero Rory McIlroy, while Philip Gray’s work was in the White House under two different administrations, Clinton and Bush. Art really does cross boundaries…

rolfharris

In a recent Daily Telegraph

article entitled ‘Why I love to paint London’, Rolf Harris was described as a ‘copper-bottomed national treasure’. Despite the fact that Rolf’s Australian roots are still very much in evidence, he has an amazing affinity for the UK, and this is never more obvious than in his magnificent paintings of his adopted country.

Page 7: Fine Ar t - legacy.dmfa.co.uklegacy.dmfa.co.uk/downloads/fapwinter2011.pdf · Fernando Botero amongst others. In collecting Todd’s work, he joins fellow Hollywood actors, while

In his book ‘A Life in Art’, Rolf explains his great affection for these scenes: “When I first arrived in England, the fog and mist were a real novelty to me, especially when the ‘pea-soupers’ started rolling in during the mid-fifties. I loved the way that you could determine how far away any object was from you by the variation in tones of grey. This typically English weather was a delight to paint and I’ve retained my childish wonder at these magical scenes. From the moment I arrived, I loved the skeletal shapes of leafless trees, the way the various tones of those misty greys pinpointed the position of each tree in the landscape. The effect of looking into the bright winter sun and seeing the great areas of blue-grey buildings or the clumps of leafless trees against the distant sky, just thrilled me, and still does.” This stunning new release portrays one of London’s most iconic landmarks, but in typical Rolf style, it is presented as a part of the city as a whole. As he himself points out, “I do see myself as a chronicler of life, in London in particular”, and rather than placing the majestic building in the foreground, he shows it overlooking the benches and lamp posts that are part of the familiar London landscape.

Darren teams up with Rio....As official artist to the PFA (Professional Footballers’ Association) and the 2012 Olympics, Darren is the country’s leading painter of sporting personalities. He is also known for his dedication to several charities, and he recently created six original drawings of footballing legends to be auctioned for the Five Stars Appeal. Players including Rio Ferdinand and Sir Bobby Charlton signed the paintings and together they raised a huge amount for the Manchester-based children’s charity.

WATCHOUT IN2012...There’s plenty to celebrate in 2012, and we fully expect to be there every step of the way. As part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations the spotlight will be turned on the collection of Royal portraits, two of which are from our very own Rolf Harris and Darren Baker. Meanwhile Fabian Perez and Darren Baker are carrying the torch for the Olympics, as both have been appointed as official artists to the big event. The calendar of events in the art world is looking exciting too, with new collections expected from star artists including Rolf Harris, Sherree Valentine Daines and Doug Hyde as well as two more stunning retrospective books to look out for.

WINTER citiES

Born and brought up in South America, Henderson now lives in London, but still loves to travel the world painting the drama and diversity of modern metropolitan life. He has formed an intense and loving artistic relationship with many of the world’s most iconic cities, and his celebrated scenes breathe life into the buildings, rivers and of course, the people thronging the streets. Voted Artist of the Year 2007, Henderson is also the holder of the coveted John Solomon trophy, which is awarded annually to the artist judged to have made the greatest impact on the art market; a testament to the fact that his work has been both successful and immensely influential in the world of fine art.

The show-stopping cityscapes of Henderson Cisz have established his international reputation as one of the finest artists of his generation and a virtuoso of urban style.

Diana AWARDTodd White has been awarded one of the United Kingdom’s most prestigious accolades in the shape of the Diana Princess of Wales Gold Medal, after donating his portrait of the Princess to the Diana Awards charity. Only 11 people have been honoured with the Award. Todd painted the late Princess as part of his Woman collection, citing Diana and her work as an inspiration in his own life. Earlier this year, he decided to donate the portrait to the Diana Awards charity which was set up in her name after her tragic death. The Diana Awards have given some 36,000 awards to ‘young people who act as a force for good’ since their inception in 1999. The charity’s patrons include Prime Minister David Cameron and the late Princess’s best friends Rosa Monckton and Julia Samuel. Todd’s painting, simply titled Diana, shows the Princess in her fun-loving mode as captured on camera by fashion photographer Mario Testino. It is expected that the painting will be auctioned to raise further funds for the charity. Maggie Turner OBE and Chief Executive of the Diana Award said:

“We are thrilled and incredibly grateful to Todd White for choosing the Diana Award as the recipient of his fabulous portrait of Diana. The portrait serves as a reminder of Diana’s passion for life and fun, as well as capturing her ability to inspire the lives of others, a quality inherent in our 36,000 Award Holders”

Jeremy Sanders has given us an arresting series

of work inspired by a recent trip to Paris. These vibrant paintings give us his personal vision of Parisian life, adding a new dimension to his existing portfolio of cityscapes and the classic cars of Cuba. Jeremy describes his work as being like a good book, “something you can get lost in” and these distinctive scenes do indeed draw the viewer in.

Although each artist has their own unique style, they all share three qualities that we

believe to be fundamental - individuality, desirability and the power to inspire.

one of aKindThis season’s originals collection incorporates an impressive array of artistic styles and genres and achieves a genuinely eclectic mix of contemporary work across a broad range of prices.

Tim Dolby meanwhile is a newer name who has been creating a real stir in the gallery. His
