Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to have

important health benefit for the unborn baby as well as the mother.

In this presentation we shall look at these benefits, plus:

• The best sources of these essential fatty acids

• Compare the different sources• How to find the best supplement

Two Vital Things to Look For In a Supplement

• Safety: Think purity and freshness. • Efficacy: This includes active ingredients and amounts.

Why Do You Need Omega-3

Fats When Pregnant?

There are two most important compounds get from omega-3 fatty acids:

• Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) • Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)

DHA is the most important two compound as it most of the

benefits of the fatty acids. Next, we shall look at some of these benefits.

Benefits for the Pregnant Mother

• They may help mitigate:• Postpartum depression• Gestational diabetes• Preeclampsia

Benefits for the Unborn Baby• Omega-3s may help promote:• Brain and eye development• Healthy birth weight and size• Later hand-eye coordination• Later verbal-communicative skills

Eat Fish or Take a Pill?

Due to pollution of sea waters fish contain toxins such as mercury, lead, PCB, and dioxins. Consuming more fish exposes you to these toxins.

Fish consumption should therefore be kept at minimum. However, this also means you won't get sufficient amounts of the fatty acids.

Fish Oil or Krill Oil?• Most research on omega-3 has been done using fish oil.

• Many experts do not recommend taking krill during pregnancy as its safety is not yet proven.

Plant Or Animal Omega-3?

Three Letters: DHA

What is this?

• DHA (docosahexaenoic acid)is the most important fatty acid. Plant sources supply alpha-Linolenic acid (ALA). This has to be converted into DHA.

• The human body is highly inefficient in converting ALA into DHA, and most of it goes to waste.

• Animal sources are therefore the better choice.

Marketing Tricks And Gimmicks• There is no such thing as a "prenatal" formula for omega-3.

• Nor is there such a thing as "pharmaceutical grade" fish oil.

• These are just terms to make you think that a product is superior.

Some manufactures do add certain compounds that may be beneficial during pregnancy to the fish oil. This may be a good thing but not necessary, and could needlessly increase the cost of the product.

When To Start Taking Omega-3

A study by the Medical Research Council (MRC) and London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine showed that it may actually be beneficial to start taking fish oil supplements before pregnancy.

• According to the study (previous slide), a mother’s nutritional status at conception can influence her child’s immunity and risk of certain diseases such as cancer.

• This means that taking in vital nutrients through food and supplements such as fish oil and multivitamin before getting pregnant may be a good idea.

The best fish oil supplement is one you can use before, during, and after pregnancy!

Side Effects• Fish oil supplements can be taken safely by most people, barring an allergy to fish. You should consult a healthcare professional if you're pregnant before starting on supplements. Ditto if you have a medical condition, are on medication, or nursing.

• Heartburn, belching, nausea, and loose stools have been reported. However, these usually go away as your body gets accustomed to the oil.

What To Look For In A Product

By following some basic guidelines finding the right supplement is actually simple. Here are some of the most important things to look for:

• High DHA and EPA amounts• DHA should be more than EPA• Type of fish used• Purity and fresh freshness

If the product does not list ingredient amounts and the source the oil is extracted from, don't buy.

Many supplements out there contain more EPA than DHA. This is because DHA is the more expensive of the two compounds. DHA is also more beneficial to both mother and baby.

Source Of The Fish Oil• It is a good idea to ensure that the fish from which the oil is extracted comes from clean waters. Purification, while a good thing, is better when it is an extra step.

• Certain high quality products are extracted from fish caught in pristine, protected waters.
