FINDING SLOPE
By Ms. Morgan
Students will be able to:
• Find the slope of a line on a coordinate plane.
Math Standard:
• 8.G.13 Determine the slope of a line from a graph and explain the meaning of slope a constant rate of change.
Do now:• Using the graphing paper, create a coordinate
plane. • Graph the following points:
Value of X
Value of Y
Pairs (X,Y)
-4 0 (-4;0)
-2 1 (-2;1)
0 2 (0;2)
4 4 (4;4)
How do we find the answer:
Value of X
Value of Y
Pairs (X,Y)
-4 0 (-4;0)
-2 1 (-2;1)
0 2 (0;2)
4 4 (4;4)
New Concept: SLOPE
• Slope is the ratio of the vertical change to the horizontal change.
Types of SLOPES:
POSITIVE (going up) NEGATIVE (going down)
Types of SLOPES cont.?
ZERO SLOPE NO SLOPE
How do we find SLOPE?
• We find SLOPE by measuring RISE OVER RUN
How do we find SLOPE cont.?
• RISE = 2 RUN = 3 SLOPE = 2/3
THIS IS A POSITIVE SLOPE
How do we find SLOPE cont.?
• RISE = 3 RUN = -2 SLOPE = -3/2
THIS IS A NEGATIVE SLOPE
On your own:USE LOOSE LEAF PAPER FOR THESE THREE PROBLEMS.
THEY WILL BE COLLECTED AND GRADED.PLEASE BE NEAT!
• Create a table and graph the following equations: • Y= 2x - 1• Y= 3x – 4
• Write down if it is a Positive or Negative SLOPE.VALUE OF X
