From the Chief Executive Officer
Inside this issue
BERT SCHMIDT President & Chief Executive Officer
orty years ago this month, something happened that
had never happened before, and hasn’t happened since: a sitting United States President resigned from office.
On August 9th, Richard Nixon came on televisions across America and gave his 37th address to the nation, describing how he had come to the decision that led to these words:
From the discussions I have had with Congressional and other leaders, I have concluded that because of the Watergate
matter I might not have the support of the Congress that I would consider necessary
to back the very difficult decisions and carry out the duties of this office in the way the interests of the Nation would
require… Therefore, I shall resign the Presidency effective at noon tomorrow.
I was barely in my teens when that came on television, but I remember it as clearly as if it were yesterday. I knew something extraordinary was going to happen, because my grandfather left a minor league baseball game we were attending (as it happens, it was the Syracuse Chiefs v. the Tidewater Tides!) because he didn’t want to miss it.
I had known about Watergate, of course. In fact, I had watched most of the hearings even though I was quite young, since my parents had the TV tuned to the proceedings throughout. Watergate – and Nixon’s subsequent resignation – was my first real awareness of a significant national issue, and one of the first times I realized that my parents and grandparents paid any attention to politics.
When the hearings weren’t televised, the Watergate scandal was frequently the topic of The Dick Cavett Show. Cavett was at the forefront of national TV coverage, interviewing nearly every major Watergate figure as the crisis unfolded. Even non-political guests expressed their opinions on the show.
This month, on August 8 at 9 pm, WHRO will air Secrets of the Dead: Dick Cavett’s Watergate. With exclusive access to the archive of The Dick Cavett Show, the program documents the scandal in the words of the people who lived it: from the botched burglary at the Democratic National Headquarters; to the must-see TV of the daily Congressional Watergate hearings; to the on-going behind-the-scenes battle between the White House and The Dick Cavett Show; culminating with the unprecedented resignation of the President of the United States 40 years ago. This program tells the dramatic, complicated and true history of the criminal conspiracy to cover up misdeeds at the highest levels of government – a conspiracy that brought down a President and changed the face of America, forever.
It’s been said that the 24-hour news cycle began with Watergate, for good or ill. As you watch this compelling drama unfold, it’s easy to understand how our nation developed its increasing thirst for knowledge and understanding.

ou need look no further than the marquee of any cinemaplex to find Hollywood’s latest crop of “answers” to that time-old question. For some reason,
summer is the season for science fiction, an awful lot of it dealing with various alien beings from outer space (or intra-space, if you count Godzilla.) We’ve had Thor and Loki from Asgard, Superman from Krypton, Paul Atreides from Dune and R2D2 from a galaxy far, far away. We’ve had the bugs of Men in Black and GORT from The Day the Earth Stood Still.
We’ve lived through Attacks from Mars and Invasions of Body Snatchers. We survived The BLOB and The War of the Worlds. The list of interstellar visitors to Earth is, seemingly, endless – at least in the movies of summer.
But back on Earth, real scientists are on the verge of answering that greatest question in human history: are we alone?
In Finding Life Beyond Earth, NOVA combines the latest telescope images with dazzling CGI, immersing viewers in the sights and sounds of alien worlds, while top astrobiologists explain how these places are
changing the way we think about the potential for life in our solar system.
Today, the system looks wilder than we ever imagined. Powerful telescopes and unmanned space missions have revealed a wide range of dynamic environments — atmospheres thick with organic molecules, active volcanoes and vast saltwater oceans. This ongoing revolution is forcing scientists to expand their ideas about what kinds of worlds could support life. If we do find primitive life forms elsewhere in the solar system, it may well be that life is common in the universe — the rule, and not the exception.
If you want monsters, creatures and speculation, head to the movies, and don’t hold the popcorn. But if science fact is what you’re after, tune to WHRO TV15 this summer – where you’re never alone!
But in the meantime, just to be on the safe side, klaatu barada nikto!

chool may be out for the summer, but our children’s services team has remained hard at work!
WHRO Early Childhood Coordinator, Martha Razor, and Education Assistant, Rosalie Rodriguez, have been taking part in summer camps and community events throughout Hampton Roads to promote reading and literacy skills to elementary aged children and their parents.
During the months of June, July and August, Razor and Rodriguez worked with the City of Norfolk’s Department of Recreation, Parks and Open Space to bring WHRO’s Raising Readers Van to summer camps at Bayview Recreation Center, Captain’s Quarters Recreation Center and East Ocean View Community Center. “Our van visits include educational games, activities and distributing books and materials for children to take home,” Razor explained.
In addition, the team helped host two week-long Super Why Reading Camps at the Little Creek-Fort Story Child Development Centers and Children’s Harbor of Portsmouth. Super Why Camps show 4- and 5-year olds the power of reading and motivate them to play with letters, sounds and words through a comprehensive curriculum developed by literacy experts.
Our Children’s Services Help Fight Summer Brain Drainby Whitney RaymoCommunications & Administrative CoordinatorWhitney [email protected]
They also conducted van visits and outreach activities at a number of community events including the Food Bank of Southeastern Virginia’s Mobile Pantry sites in Portsmouth; a Breakfast with Super Why at Whole Foods Market in Virginia Beach; and the launch of the Space Racers exhibit at the Virginia Air and Space Center in Hampton.
Recent studies show that students can lose one to three months of learning over a long summer vacation. “We believe that promoting literacy is important all year round, but it’s essential during the summer when ‘brain drain’ can set in for students,” said Rodriguez. “We’re doing everything we can to keep kids reading and learning all summer long.”

ince 2001, 2.6 million service men and women have been deployed to support operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. More than half have

months. As service members transition out of the military, readjusting to civilian life can present significant stress and challenges, including higher rates of unemployment, divorce and suicide than the general population.
Veterans Coming Home is a national public media effort to support veterans made possible by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. WHRO joins other stations in pairing strong, national on-air content with local stories of veterans and their families. We are working with community-based partner organizations to better coordinate
and publicize local services for veterans, share stories of their challenges and
triumphs, and connect more veterans with local resources and support.

his story starts six years ago, in 2008 when I got my first composter. It was one of those tall rectangular bins that allows you to put stuff in the top and has
a front slide door at the bottom, so you can take compost out. I never got to use that slide door - at least not to remove the organic gardener’s version of black gold. No. My bin was more a storage unit for discarded food and yard waste. While not causing problems, it wasn’t adding much value either.
Hoping the bin was the issue, a few years later I got a small tumbler composter. Just a few weeks after that, I was given a larger tumbler by my roommate. Suddenly, I had three composters, all of which were failing to produce compost.
Soon after, one of my roommates decided it was time to take our composting seriously. After doing some online research he began making sure that we had a good mix of table scraps and brown and green yard
T
waste. Success started slowly, but after a few months we had usable compost. Most of this was created by cool temperature aerobic breakdown augmented by the steadfast work of soldier flies, and perhaps other, less desirable bugs. So, while we had compost that was nutrient rich, the lack of high temperature meant it was also filled with thousands of viable weed and volunteer seeds. That year, weeding the flower and vegetable gardens was a never-ending battle. We also never knew when or where another cucumber plant might pop-up. Somehow we
even ended up with a fairly prolific horned melon growing in our front garden bed.
The next year, my roommate’s diligence brought more rapidly created compost and even some of the hot stuff. On those triumphant days, we’d gather around the composter, putting our hands over it to feel steam rising up. Although this was hit or miss, it was a major leap forward and always caused a minor celebration. This newfound success was brought about by two key elements: the ratio of browns to greens and the frequency with which we aerated it. Grass clippings, thoroughly mixed in, turned out to be the magic ingredient. Lawn mowing is no longer about making the front yard presentable, it’s about harvesting those heat inducing green beauties. Once collected, we add the clippings over a couple of days so their benefit can be extended.

August 2014Radio Highlights
LENNY MONDAY AUGUST 25 WHRO 90.3 FM
Leonard Bernstein was a prodigiously gifted musician, a man of enormous energy and talent. His was a conductor who became front-page news in 1943 and brought Mahler back to the public’s ear in the 1960’s. He was a composer who chronicled his beloved New York in musicals, notably “West Side Story,” and his religion in works like the “Chichester Psalms”. Hear Lenny’s music making on his birthday, August 25th.
“THE PATRON SAINT OF MEDIOCRITY” MONDAY AUGUST 18 WHRO 90.3 FM
With those words, composer Antonio Salieri describes himself at the end of the Peter Schaffer play “Amadeus.” It’s a moving moment in a powerful play, but a play built upon rumor and fiction. In fact, Salieri was a talented and accomplished composer and conductor, highly regarded by his contemporaries, including Mozart. On Salieri’s birthday, August 18, we will try to offset his somewhat tarnished reputation by playing many of his very enjoyable compositions.
PICKIN’ SUNDAY AUGUST 3 AT 7PM • WHRV 89.5 FMA very special, three hour, edition of Pickin’ to be aired on Sunday evening, August 3 will highlight the traditional bluegrass side of the iconic guitarist and singer Tony Rice.
From his work in the early 1970s on a self-titled recorded project, to his work with J.D. Crowe as a member of the New South and release of the now Bluegrass Music classic project, Rounder 0044, Tony Rice defined a new generation of bluegrass greats. His recordings with Ricky Scaggs revisits the brother duets styling of the pre-bluegrass format. He cemented his role as a bluegrass legacy with his work as a member of the Bluegrass Album Band.
Influenced by family members, and guitar greats such as “Doc” Watson, and Clarence White, Rice usedthose styles to produce a sound of his own that has now become standards for guitar players the world over. Rice’s work has influenced countless guitarists, not only in bluegrass music, but jazz, and Americana types of guitar techniques and formats.
Co-hosts Barry Graham and Harold Smith would like to invite you to this special edition of Pickin’ on WHRV-FM. Sunday, August 3 at 7PM.

on an event that will be bigger than ever in its 26 years in Hampton Roads. The festival site this year will be highly interactive and will feature brand-new areas, including a Family Fun Park, a game arena, and an outdoor Club venue. Multi-platinum award-winning music artist Deborah Cox is the music headliner along with the world’s first transgendered comedian, Ian Harvie.
PrideFest also hosts the nation’s only Pride Boat Parade which will commence at the start of the festival by Waterside and is emceed by WHRV’s HearSay radio show host Cathy Lewis and Todd Rosenlieb, owner of TRDance Center in Norfolk.
Hampton Roads Pride’s mission is to instill pride, celebrate unity and embrace diversity in the Hampton Roads Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community by creating visibility and promoting full human and civil rights through education, celebration, and networking. The non-profit organization also provides scholarships and promotes strong community partnerships with other LGBT organizations.

ishi Bashi is the pseudonym of Kaoru Ishibashi (born November 4, 1975). While Ishibasi currently lives in Athens, Georgia, he spent most of his
formative years calling Norfolk his home. After graduating from Maury High School in 1994, Ishibashi earned admission to Berklee College of Music where he majored in film scoring. His prowess with the violin soon found him sharing the stage with acts such as Sondre Lerche, Alexi Murdoch, Regina Spektor, and of Montreal. After an opening act failed to show at a Regina Spektor concert in Europe, Ishibashi volunteered his services and his career as a solo performer was born.
As his star continued to shine, Ishibashi released his first EP with the help of Montreal frontman Kevin Barnes. He returned to Norfolk after falling out of love with the daily grind of New York City and successfully kick-started his debut album, 151a, raising over $14,000 in under a week. While performing songs from the album live, he would use multiple loop pedals and effects to create multi-layered mini-symphonies of violin, voice, and beatboxing. After a performance at Austin’s SXSW Festival, NPR declared him one of their “Top Acts of SXSW” stating, “I really felt like I was

witnessing history... in a couple of years we’ll be talking about, ‘Man, I saw him at this intimate little show.’” A national tour of his own followed, hitting major markets. While performing at the Attucks Theater, he announced to the crowd that a jingle he wrote for a Japanese cell-phone commercial had begun to take on a life of its own. An overseas tour was booked and the success of the jingle led to him writing “Philosophize In It! Chemicalize In It!”. The song subsequently became his first number one hit in Japan and served as the first single for his new album, Lighght, which debuted at Number 52 on the Billboard Top 200.
Ishibashi’s intriguing method of composing music has also presented him with various opportunities in the art world. In May of 2013, he was invited to speak at the prestigious TEDMED conference in Washington D.C. His audience has grown to the point where he now sells out theaters in
major markets on each coast of the United States. Still, not one to forget his roots in the area, he took the opportunity during a September 2013 stop-over in the area to do an intimate solo set at the Chrysler Museum’s glass studio during their Third Thursday (formerly Third Wednesday) events, as he has done in the past. The line for the event stretched from the front steps of the studio to the fountain in front of the museum proper. More recently, he made a return to Hampton Roads for his third headlining performance at the Norva for the penultimate date of his US tour. Currently, he is making several appearances in the summer festival circuit, interspersed with more dates in Japan and a full overseas tour beginning in October.

“Crisscrossing the United States, first as an Army brat and then during a 30-year Naval
career, public television and radio have been a constant. I support WHRO because it is an integral member of the community
enriching our lives through news and music programming not available anywhere
else. One of the reasons for retiring here is because of WHRO’s classical music programs and wanting to keep it alive through my continued support - I can’t
imagine a world without it.”
