and WorldCat

Finding books held at UVic

Go to the UVic Libraries web page: http://www.uvic.ca/library

Select the Books & Media tab

Use the “Search in:” menu to select the type of search you want to do (author, title, etc.)

Finding books by title

To see if we have a specific title, type the book title in the search box, e.g.: cat in the hat

Use the drop down menu to select Title begins with

Click on a title

to see the

expanded record

Finding books by author

Select Author heading

Enter the name of a personal author in telephone book order

Enter the name of a corporate author as written:

Vancouver Island

Health Authority

Finding books by author

If found, your author is displayed with a number indicating how many items by them we hold

Click on the author’s name to display the complete list of titles

Click on a title to see a more detailed record and request any titles which look useful from Infoline

For books on a specific

topic, select Keyword anywhere

Enter your key concepts in the search box

All the items which include your keywords will be displayed

Click on a title to view the expanded record

and request titles you want from Infoline

Finding books @ UVic

Anything listed as not available means the title is currently signed out to another user

If you’re a distance student, Infoline can place a recall on these items and forward them to you when received

UVic Library Catalogues list the books, journal titles, videos and other materials held in the University libraries collections

WorldCat contains over 35 million records of material cataloged by libraries across North America and other parts of the world…all in one convenient database

Distance students can request any item located in WorldCat through Infoline

Note: The instructions here show access via Chrome, Safari, or IE In Firefox, click on “Navigation” to see the headings described

From the Library web page, select Search & find then Books & media

Click on the WorldCat link

Enter your Netlink ID and password if/when prompted to do so

Search for material by keyword, author, or title

Use truncation for terms with variant endings, e.g. child? (will find child, child’s, children, childhood, etc.)

Use quotation marks to search for a phrase as a block of text, e.g. “All’s well that ends well”

Click on the title to view the expanded record

The expanded record for newer items will often include the table of contents

If the item looks useful, request it via Infoline

Or use the Libraries worldwide that own item link to see if it is available at a local academic library

Distance students can request a COPPUL Card from Infoline

A COPPUL Card identifies you as a registered UVic student

It will allow you to borrow books in person without going through Infoline, free of charge

Alternatively distance students can request the item from Infoline

To do this, click on the Where can I get this? link

Next select Request from Infoline

A form will appear with the information about what it is you want to borrow

Scroll down and fill in your name, student number, address and contact number

Click Send Request to forward the request to Infoline@uvic.ca
