Production history
Made as a half hour television documentary, Desert Heart follows the Yulparija artist's trip from their home in Bidyadanga to their country in the desert in 2008. The original camera rushes were donated along with the finished product as a cultural gift in 2009, including copyright.
The Yulparija artists are famous for their salt-water palette and their desert subject matter, for although they live by the sea they walked out of the desert 40 years earlier and still consider themselves desert people. The young artist Daniel Walbidi had been painting the desert for years before taking this trip to see the desert heart for the first time.
