MotivationLet’s talk about motivation. What gets you fired up?

Over the years, we’ve learned that one thing is true: people stick with what they love. For a few lucky people, the simple joy of working out is motivation enough to bring them to the club. But for many of us, it’s not just the workout that gets us there. You may have heard the phrase, “Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.” The same can be said for exercise. Find something you're passionate about, and a workout will feel less like work and more like fun.

A member once said that taking Cycle class at the WAC was the best part of her day. But it wasn’t the sitting in a dark room pedaling a bike to nowhere that kept her coming back; it was the connection with other members, the encouragement from her Instructor and the fun atmosphere of the class that sparked her passion for cycling and made the WAC her home away from home.

Not everyone is motivated to come to the club by their sheer desire to climb on a Stairmaster. Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of Stairmasters to climb and weights to lift and treadmills to tread, but look past the equipment and you’ll find what gets us fired up: helping members find something they’re passionate about—something that makes a difference in their lives.

My favorite Group Fitness Class is YOGA eXpReSS because...In Yoga, the instructor is everything. Meghan Foley knows what she’s doing. This 45-minute class is a perfect length to break from work, and Meghan fills it with sequences that build on each other to close with a challenging pose before shavasana. i get warmed up enough in this class to feel rejuvenated for the day, but not so much that I need to shower before getting back to my desk. I only wish this class was offered every day of the week.

My favorite Group Fitness Class is STReNGTh because...it’s a good mix of cardio and resistance. There are so many different equipment options, from dumbells and body bars to steps, balance balls and resistance bands. heidi always has something to surprise me, like new movements that target different muscle groups. Strength class targets your whole body with an emphasis on core so you can cover a lot in just one class. it’s a very friendly group with no judgment; i look forward to seeing my workout buddies every week.

Foam rolling, also known as “self-myofascial release”, is a technique developed by medical professionals and athletes that has transformed to a familiar, everyday practice used by people of all fitness levels. it is a form of self-massage that releases muscle tightness and loosens trigger points (knots). By applying pressure to specific parts of your body, you are able to assist in muscle recovery and help return muscles to a normal length and full function (elastic, healthy and ready to work).

4 reasons why you should start foam rolling regularly:

1. It reduces muscle soreness and tightness

2. it increases flexibility and offers an improved range of motion

3. it helps with injury prevention

4. it helps reduce stress

Foam Rolling Tips:■ SLoWLY roll over the targeted muscle. When you find a trigger point, pause on the spot and hold for a minimum of 15 seconds. This will help dissipate the knot back into a smooth muscle strand of resting length. ■ You will experience discomfort or pain during the rolling process. it should be uncomfortable but not unbearable. When you are done, you should feel some relief. ■ It is not an immediate fix and will need to be done on a regular basis to restore a muscle to full function. The more often you roll, the less painful it will become.

Rolling Toward R

ecovery▼

■ The rolled muscle may be tender to the touch the next day. ■ You can use a foam roller on any body part, but it is especially useful for your calf muscles, lats (back muscles), quads, hamstrings and glutes. over time, regular foam rolling will lead to increased fitness performance, pain free movement, proper movement patterns and a complete range of motion. Foam rollers are able to target muscles deeper and more thoroughly than stretching alone. The combination of the two is ideal!

Ask a WAC fitness professional for a foam rolling demonstration or look for a Roll and Release workshop at your club.

tips for Working out in the ColdWhile “Wisconsin hibernation” is technically not in the Webster’s dictionary, we can define the term in a number of ways:

● A duration of time spent on the couch eating cheese and sausage while watching the Packers.

● A time ranging from the very first snow flake in the middle of november until the last snowflake falls in April…or maybe May!

● Time spent crossing each and every day off on the calendar until spring break.

This time doesn’t have to be wasted. There are many fun and challenging outdoor winter exercises, from running and walking to snowshoeing, skiing, ice-skating and more. here are some tips for enjoying these activities and making sure your body is ready for the cold weather:

■ dress properly. The first rule of thumb is to invest in a good base layer that wicks sweat away from the body and wear light layers over the base. This will allow you to start your workout at a comfortable temperature. it is always more desirable to remove a layer and prevent overall discomfort.

■ perform a dynamic warm-up. The last thing your body wants to do before an activity is a static stretch (holding a muscle past its normal range of motion for a period of time). Before heading outside, try doing a series of dynamic warm up movements. An example of this “active” form of stretching can be as simple walking in a straight line and pulling the knee up with your hands towards your chest and then alternating with the other knee.

■ have a proper cool down. Finish your outdoor activity with a few minutes at a lighter intensity to start cooling down your body. Follow that by heading inside and conducting your static stretches (see above) or utilize another form of stretching and recovery such as myofascial release (foam rolling).

general outdoor exercise tips: Stay hydrated, wear sunscreen, wear reflective/colorful clothing, know your terrain (watch for ice spots!), and overall LiSTen To YouR BoDY and know your limits!

Don’t let the cold get the best of your outdoor fitness routine this winter. Follow the tips above and enjoy all Wisconsin has to offer for outdoor recreation and ways to stay active!

have you been thinking about working with a Personal Trainer? have you ever thought of training with a group? Whether you are just starting out with a Trainer or you have been training for years, adding Small group Training to your routine is economical, fun and effective. here’s why: Camaraderie – Being part of a group enhances the workout experience for all the participants.

Cost – While 1-on-1 training offers the most personal attention, you may find small group training fits better into your budget and still gives you the attention you need.

Motivation – Everyone enjoys a little healthy competition. Working out with someone can create a fun, limit-pushing environment.

Adherence – Research shows that

people who are involved in programs are more likely to stick with it.

Results – Consistently challenging yourself will get you the results you are looking for. if you are interested in Small group Personal Training, contact the Fitness Director at your club or talk to your Personal Trainer about how to join or start a group.

By Laura BraunMassage Therapist WAC Menomonee Falls

Fit Massage into Your Fitness planMany people think of massage therapy as a special treat or luxury. While a massage can definitely be that for many people, massage therapy can improve your training and performance when integrated into your full exercise routine. When your group Fitness instructor, Personal Trainer and Massage Therapist work together, they can help you perform at your optimal level and help you achieve your goals faster.

For example, Personal Trainers trying to correct the gait of a runner can work with the Massage Therapists to treat specific muscles. For me personally, my Trainer identified an issue with my foot turning outward when I ran. We worked with my Massage Therapist to release tight muscles that were causing my foot to turn outward. Now that my foot is more properly aligned, my personal training sessions are more effective.

So don’t let your massage be simply a luxury. Let it be part of your full exercise program. Talk with your Massage Therapist about the group fitness classes you’re taking or the areas your Trainer is focusing on. Allow the WAC’s group Fitness instructors, Personal Trainers and Massage Therapists to work together to help you find the best you.

About the Organizationnev’s ink was founded in 1989, and we just celebrated our 25th anniversary last month! We specialize in manufacturing medical labels and medical tape. Due to our steadfast values of providing high quality healthcare labels at competitive prices, we have experienced continual growth throughout the years and look to continue that trend.

About AaronMy name is Aaron Ames and I am 23. I am the Art Director and the leader of our wellness program. i love working out, making music, painting and volunteering to keep busy!

Tell us about your wellness program and how it startedour health insurance provider (humana) introduced us to their “Vitality Program”, which motivates members to live a healthier lifestyle to cut insurance costs. We saw it as a great opportunity to not only save our employees money, but as a great way to positively improve and support their lives and livelihoods. When we are healthy, we are happy, and the program is consistently improving—just like our habits.

What are the components of your wellness program?our goal is to make healthy habits and lifestyles a part of our company culture while simultaneously earning members “Vitality

Points” to lower insurance premiums. We coordinate events with the WAC that earn points, participate in the Lombardi Walk/Run annually, help employees schedule health screenings, and regularly suggest ways for members to earn points and reach their goals. it is an easy concept to get excited about because members improve their health and save money.

how has partnering with the WAC helped your wellness program? The WAC has given our program a great boost in employee education and motivation. We had just launched the wellness program in January and were looking for some outside help to get people excited; the WAC did just that. The WAC helped us organize our own Find Your Fit Challenge, provided great speakers at two healthy lunches, and is currently hosting an on-site Stretching/Core class every Thursday.

What are some key successes?it is only our first year of having this program and we already are having great success. on an individual basis, we have had members change their lives entirely. one gentleman has lost over 50 pounds since we began! our employees have opened up tremendously to new information, developing habits that support a healthy lifestyle, and our company culture is significantly improving because of it!

What are the future objectives for your wellness program? We aim to continuously educate everyone involved and motivate them to be happy and healthy. We are always looking for new ways to get people excited about being healthy. i believe, with time, our wellness program will continue to grow.

Many adults missed out on learning to swim as a child or grew up with a fear of water, made worse by overanxious parents or a terrifying incident.

In college, I was recruited to teach a class for beginner adult swimmers. A few of them were hesitant to even move away from the wall at first. With a lot of hard work and encouragement, they all progressed to swimming a full length of the pool during the few months we worked together. The pride and confidence these students gained from their newfound abilities inspired me to continue teaching adults to swim.

There are many myths about swim instruction for adults. Let us break them down for you and show you why they are false.

“Swim lessons are only for children.”Absolutely not. Swim lessons can be

catered to any age and ability level. Whether you are

nervous in the water, are training for a triathlon

or would simply like to exercise in the pool, a swim instructor can help you reach your goals. We’re never too old to learn!

“I’m the only adult who doesn’t know how to swim.”You are definitely not alone. As many as 50-65% of U.S. adults do not know how to swim. The WAC offers both private and group classes aimed at adults who never learned to swim. There are many reasons for not knowing how but no more excuses to stop you from learning now.

“Swimming is too difficult; I feel out of breath right away.”Swimming can be extra challenging at first due to the resistance of the water. It is a workout that is great for the lungs and targets all muscles, including ones you may not use very often. Be patient and stick with it. Given some time, your body will become used to the activity and be able to push further.

If you are curious about adult swim instruction and would like to learn more, contact your club’s aquatics director about lessons or look for an Adult Learn to Swim class in the Water schedule.

E v E n t sMeta houseThe members and staff at West Allis have been active in the support of the Meta house of Milwaukee. Meta house is an internationally recognized drug and alcohol abuse treatment pro-gram for women providing long term, gender responsive treatment since 1983. The facility became one of the first in the nation to include children in the residential treatment setting. The innovative and holistic treatment model has made the Meta house a success. We will be collecting toys and per-sonal gift items at the West Allis lobby. Please join us in helping make the holi-day season more joyful for the women and children at the Meta house.

MAking ADifferenceRacquet for Autism – Thank You! We would like to take this opportunity to thank the WAC family, our sponsors and all those who made generous donations to the Racquet for Autism event held on September 27, 2014 at the West Allis Club. It was an overwhelming success. You will never truly know how much your generosity means to us, our families, and especially Jack Madlung in whose honor the event took place.

We have had many trials and setbacks over the last seven years since Jack’s diagnosis with Autism. in fact, he was not able to attend the event this year because he was in Boston, MA and undergoing a third colonoscopy in his young life. it is so important that organizations like Autism Speaks continue to fund research projects and support children with Autism and their families.

With your help and generosity, we were able to raise over $14,500 to help in this effort. Mere words cannot express our gratitude and appreciation for all your help and goodwill. Special thanks to our court sponsors:

1. Dynamic Color Solutions. Inc. (Jim and Jimmy Crawford)2. outlook Development group (Matt Stamborski)3. Friends and Family of Jay and Anna Wollenberg4. new Riverside ochre5. Ken Adamec for donation of court signs

Most Sincerely Yours,Jim and Jimmy Crawfordgrandfather and uncle of Jack Madlung

Deb appeared in this August, 1989 Milwaukee Journal newspaper ad for the WAC.

Thank you…You make a big difference in our club!

Meet deb ShookAt your service since 1981!

Deb’s Family: My husband, Jeff, and 3 adopted Yorkshire Terriers, Jack, JB and Lucy. My son, Scott, and daughter-in-law Amber and grandchildren, olivia & Christian.

Position: opening Manager at WAC Wauwatosa, Training & Development, Fit u, and group Fitness instructor

Deb’s Story:i joined “The Racquetball Club” in 1980 to learn how to play racquetball with a friend whom i worked with at A. o. Smith Corp. We took the beginner series of lessons from Sandy Coffman and then continued to play in the leagues. i so enjoyed the energy and the “home away from home” feel of the club. The owners, Keith nygren and Ted Torcivia, the staff and members were so friendly and welcoming. I knew i wanted to be a part of this and soon started working as an instructor teaching “aerobic” classes. We taught classes on the courts with our leotards, leg warmers and the concept of faster & harder is better… thank you Jane Fonda!

I have worked in many areas of the club over the years at three of the seven locations. I feel very lucky every day that I get to work here and connect with such amazing people that have made such a difference in my life!

Chief Characteristic: My loyalty!

natural talent that i would like to be gifted with: Music… i always wanted to be the lead singer in a rock band.

Favorite motto or quote: Live well, laugh often & dance a little every day.

From Wauwatosa General Manager, Derek:every morning when i walk into the Tosa WAC, i feel energy, passion and grit from Deb. i’ll never forget one of the best examples of dedication and loyalty in my time at the WAC. Last winter, Deb was driving to the club to open at 2:00am. At about 2:20am, her tire blew with the temperatures well below zero. Did Deb wait for a tow truck? no. Did Deb call Jessica, the Front Desk Director? no. Did Deb call me? no. Deb walked from highway 45 to the club and opened on time. Deb didn’t miss a beat and our members were able to enjoy their normal workout routines. Deb doesn’t work a “job”. instead, she has found her “calling,” and it shows!

Deb, thank you for making a difference in the lives of many.

We joined the Menomonee Falls WAC in July and love the new facility. our favorite feature is the outside pool and splash pad.

infatuated with sports is our 8-year-old Bryce. his nickname is Cheetah for his incredible speed during his track meets. he loves running during football games, basketball or just to the park. Bryce is also known as the “personal trainer” in our house.

lion is our 6-year-old Braden’s nickname. he loves playing hockey, running full speed at us in football and wrestling with his big bro. even though he’s tough, he has a huge heart and personality.

love for sports best describes the boys in our house. The guys are smiling while playing football, street hockey and basketball outside or in the basement during the winter months.

isabella is our 1-year-old tomboy in princess clothing. She loves playing “tackle football” with her brothers, playing at the park, and hanging with her bros in the bouncy house.

Avid hockey player best describes Tom, A.K.A. Dad. Tom has been a Kohl’s employee since 2005. he’s extremely dedicated to his job and family. Tom is a huge sports fan, attending all the Badger Football games with family members and now the boys.

Mom, A.K.A. Stef, is ringmaster of our crazy house. She enjoys her 9 AM “coffee break” everyday at the WAC. Boot Camp, Cycle, and Bodypump are some of her favorite classes.

Spending quality time together with family laughing, loving, and playing at the WAC and at home together as a family are when we are the happiest.

“health” Foods: Preventing Colds and Flu This Winter

every year it happens: the weather turns colder, we complain a little (or a lot), and we start thinking about how to keep from catching the colds and flu bugs that seem to be everywhere around us.

Let’s get ahead of it this year! While there is no proven 100% effective way to prevent colds and the flu, getting adequate water and calories, a nutrient-dense diet, and sensible exercise can help you keep your body in tip-top shape. Let’s take a closer look at each of these lifestyle factors and how they may benefit the immune system to make this winter illness-free.

● Water - getting enough fluids will keep your body tissues hydrated as the air gets drier. For most of us, drinking half of our body weight in ounces of water is a good rule of thumb. More active people will need more.

● Adequate Calories - if you want to keep your immune system healthy, dramatically cutting calories (typical of extreme weight loss plans) is a poor plan. This is just one more reminder of the importance of being “real” with any new attempts to lose weight this winter. Make this the year you vow to do it sensibly and sustainably!

source. While no vitamin or mineral has been proven to help, there is no harm - and possibly some benefit - to including a basic multi-vitamin and mineral supplement. it is not an excuse to skip the fruits and vegetables, but it may fill in where your diet falls short. Try a new recipe if you are bored with your current eating habits. There are many easy and quick recipes to try at thewac.com/recipes.

● Sensible exercise - A healthy body needs to move! Keeping your immune system humming requires movement of the proper quality and quantity. Studies show that too much or too little can weaken the immune system. What feels moderate to you, including activities you can enjoy most days of the week, will strengthen your body and elevate your mood. This may be a good time to try a new activity if you are in a rut with exercise... or if your rut is avoiding exercise all together!

Are you motivated yet? Let’s make this a healthy w
