Intro To Search Engines
What is a search engine? Why would I need one?How do I use one? What are some
examples?What is Page Rank (and
how can searching be free)?
?
What Is A Search Engine?
It’s a software machine that finds pages on the Internet, based on a large, constantly updated index of links.
Like a machine, a search engines runs all the time (it’s never tired!).
Why Would I Need One?
For the same reason librarians are helpful in libraries! Search engines help you find things.
The Web has too many pages for human librarians. You need a computer’s help.
How Do I Use One?
Browse to the search site.
Type in one or more keywords.
Look at the “results” (links to various pages).
Surf to pages whose links look helpful.
How Do These Work?
Search engines control other programs called “robots”, “spiders”, or “crawlers”.
Spiders link from one page to the next around the Web, sending what they find to the engine for indexing.
What Are Some Examples?
google.comask.comwebcrawler.comOr “portals” like--yahoo.commsn.comexcite.com
How Can Searching Be Free?
Advertisers PAY search engine operators to:
Get their site spidered (included).
Show “sponsored links” whenever users type in certain keywords.
Get ranked higher.
What Is “Page Rank”?
Page rank is the ORDER in which a search Engine gives results.
Highly-ranked pages are worth money to advertisers: it means their ads are likely to be seen.
The Future… ????
Freeways of the future: Cars move sideways,
backwards, even up and down the sides of buildings.
Tom Cruise (“John Anderton”) is Chief of Police. He’s suspected of being about to kill someone, which is a crime! (Could this happen?)
?
He’s On The Run…
Anderton must escape the cops who used to work for him!, BUT…they take over his car by remote control, with him in it!
Retinal scanners supported by advertisers are everywhere. Anderton realizes he must do something about his eyes, which will give him away.
Possibilities of the Future…
There is a video monitor so thin and flexible it can be read like a newspaper. (Already available!-- just expensive).
…and a great scene with cops flying around on jet packs.
