Final Questionnaire
By Prajwol Khamcha
QuestionnaireO I asked 16 questions to 30 people who were in
my target audience and who were interested in the genre such as mainstream listeners. I sent my questions out by hand but the majority was sent by Web 2.0 to digital natives who use social media as well as sent in out to converged devices. This allows me to access my audience as due to the development of Technology it means they become more accessible.
O In terms of putting the questionnaire on Survey Monkey, it was a fail, as I didn’t receive any answers from my audience and therefore relied on Social Media.

Gender Type That Listen To Hip Hop
MaleFemale
O This question was important for me to identify the main gender that I should promote to. As I wanted to know for myself which Gender listened to Hip Hop more.
O So as said on other texts, Male Genders listened to Rap more, 77%. I think this is because Males feel empowered by listening to Hip Hop music, because of how misogynistic the lyrics are and the patriarchal dominance feeds into a male’s ego.
O Overall It was clear to say that my Magazine will appeal more to males then Females. I will do this, by making the magazine have a more aggressive tone and make it less friendly, in terms of the context.

The Front Image
Pull Quote
Layout Of the Magazine
The Masthead
The Coverlines
O This was important because I wanted to see what my audience would be most attracted to when looking at a magazine.
O The anomaly for me was Pull Quote I felt that would get a lot more votes, but I think it didn’t because my audience are fox thinkers, those who liked the Front image(44%).
O Front image was voted the most with 44% and layout being 2nd with 25%, this shows my audience are fox thinkers and that they need structuring in the magazine.
O Cover lines only got 9% which indicates my audience do not want to see many cover lines, which I understand as you can see leading Magazines like XXL have few cover lines.

For a Hip Hop Magazine What would you like to see
in the front cover? Artist lifestyleartist creating Musicartist growing upArtist opinion on Social Issues
An Up and Coming Artist
A Popular Artist
A controversial Artist
An overnight Sensation
O Because I identified that a lot of my audiences would be fox thinkers from low class income bracket, I asked what type of image would be most appealing to them.
O As I am a small magazine brand the audience liked having an Up and coming artist (43%) as the front cover. This is because they are strivers therefore they would like to see the “Rags to Riches” story.
O In terms of the 17% saying they would like to see a popular artist was because they are mainstream, who aren’t really in my audience, I surveyed them for more insight on how to attract fox thinkers.

What Gender would you like to see on the main front cover?

No PreferenceFemalesMales
O The hard thing about asking this question was that sometimes people feel ashamed to say which gender they’d like to see because people might judge them, but I felt I got good honest answers.
O 40% wanted male as the front cover wheras only 5% wanted female. This shows that Hip Hop is dominated by Male’s, because of how empowering they are.
O 55% said they had no preference I believe in terms of attracting my main audience who are fox thinkers, I would have to have a detailed image of someone showing a lot e.g. a Close up shot.

COVERLINES
3 or more03
O In terms of the cover lines, it was a very mixed total but 0 cover lines having the most of 40%. It shows that we have more fox thinkers than any other type in the audience.
O More than 3 cover lines was 2nd with 33% and 3rd being 3 cover lines 27% this shows that I have a sophisticated audience as well who are well educated and want to know what they are reading before they get it.
O In terms of 2, 1 cover lines, I understood why they weren’t picked, just having one or two cover line looks weird and unusual.

Images on The Front Cover
013
O 67% fox thinkers wanted it to be no image and just a focus of the focal image of the artist, obviously as they tend to get distracted.
O 6% wanted to see one image, they are probably fox thinkers to as they cannot pay attention to more than 2 images.
O The more sophisticated Audience wanted 3 images (17%) these are probably mainstream audiences as well as, they are more attracted to magazines like Vibe. But clearly this is for those who can pay attention.

Would you expect the Language for the front cover to be formal or
informal?Artist lifestyleartist creating Musicartist growing upFormal Language
Informal LanguageNo Preference
O Surprisingly here more people wanted a formal magazine, not by much but enough to show a difference. 43% wanted a formal magazine, which indicates that my audience is educated, meaning that I can add other variety of content such as news.
O 37% wanted it informal therefor it shows how uneducated they and it makes it more personal to them, but it is less likely I will have it informal because I am trying to produce a message therefor I don’t want it to be taken lightly. Neither do I want become more mainstream and like a Pop Magazine.

Medium Shot
O 43% liked the concept of a close up shot. This is probably because they feel it is more aggressive and stays true to the ideology of Hip Hop being violent.
O Medium Shot has a total of 27%, which although people get to the artist, I don’t think I’ll use it as it is more for more established artists.
O 17% liked the concept of a long shot and Medium shot, but depending on what type of artist/s I will shoot I probably won’t shoot that type of shot as it distances the artist from the audience.
O A=37%O B=26%O C=37%O A and C were tied
as more people wanted to see the image of the artist and not be distracted by the cover lines.
O The sophisticated and more educated probably picked Vibe magazine as they want more contextual detail.

Exclusive Inter-views with an artistDebates e.g. Top 10 Rappers of all timeFashion News Rumours
O I was encouraged by the fact that no one voted for rumours, because if they did I would feel like my Hip Hop magazine would be a female pop magazine.
O Although I will probably include most of these cover lines, I was encouraged by the fact that 55% audience wanted an exclusive interview with an artist, which was my initial idea so overall I was happy with the outcome of the answers. The exclusive interview also helps produce the star image of the artist by making them seem desirable as it promotes the ideology that fame is important.

What should the double page spread, within my Hip Hop
magazine be about?Artist lifestyleartist creating Musicartist growing upArtist opinion on Social IssuesArtists Past e.g. Relationships
O The strivers in my magazine were probably the ones who picked out about the artist. The highest was the artists lifestyle with 36% this could have been helped by the mainstream fans.
O 3% wanted to know about an artists past relationship, I am happy with this because I didn’t want to turn my magazine into a girly magazine.
O 17% wanted to read about social issues which was surprising for me as I wanted to do my magazine about social issues, therefore maybe I have to rethink my plans.
O A=16%O B=48%O C=28%O D=8%
O B was the most popular because it was enough to show the artists emotion and it didn’t feel uncomfortable for readers to read the main content.
O D was the lowest because they said the image was too close and it distracted them and even put them off.
O A= 34%O B=66%O The most popular by far
was B, due to the fact that content was minimal in terms of description, I like this because in terms of content description I feel it is useless.
O A wasn’t as appealing to the Fox thinkers which I thought was surprising as there is less text, but I am happy with this as it means I can write more variety of content.
O A=32%O B=51%O C=6%O D=11%O E=0%
O I was surprised by the fact that A was second highest as it is quite faded.
O I am happy that B was the most as it is very solid therefore appealing. B also is iconic of the American varisty font, which links the genre to its roots in the US.
O E got 0% because for a masthead it would be too small in size.
Conclusion…O I decided that my magazine masthead will have the similar bold style
to B, this is because it is appealing and dominating and it is eye catching and appeals to the fox thinkers.
O I am going to for my contents page have less description and short and snappy content, this is because it will be easier for unsophisticated audience to keep attention and not get distracted.
O I am going to probably put three images on my front cover Max. This is because I don’t want it to be off putting and distracting for fox thinkers, but I also want the content to satisfy the need of sophisticated and educated C2.
O My magazine will cost £2.50. As most Rap magazines sell at a higher price I chose this, because my mass audience range from E-C2 in income bracket so they probably might be out off by large prices.
O For my double spread sheet I will do an artist interview, about an up and coming artist, this will appeal to strivers as they are my main target audience.
