New Orleans, LA

New Orleans, since its founding day as a predominantly French and African city, has been the center for vibrance and the arts in not only Louisiana but in the South as a whole. New Orleans straddles the Missis-sippi River, and is a major United States port city with one of the most sprawling metropolitan areas in all of Louisiana. Being a port city abutting the Mississippi, New Orleans has many ties to the ocean and the water. In fact, much of the revenue of the city is from port related activities, second only to its popular toursist inter-ests. New Orelans itself is known for its wonderful diversity, which can lend itself to the history of the city. Ever since its founding it has been a mix of culture and people, which eventually created the city that it is now. As the sole proprieter of the annual event of Mardi Gras, New Orleans has turned itself into the center for vibrancy and cultural wealth of the south, and one can only get a glimpse of its passion through images, for New Orleans must be experienced for onself. New Orleans has many major attractions, from the world-re-nowned French Quarter and Bourbon Street's notorious nightlife to St. Charles Avenue (home of Tulane and Loyola Universities, the historic Pontchartrain Hotel, and many 19th century mansions), to Magazine Street, with its many boutique stores and antique shops. New Orleans is an absolute wealth of culture, art, and music making it the perfect fit for the Art Foundation Headquarters to initiate the revitalization of the city through a new contemporary art gallery abutting the existing building in the busy downtown district.

My collection of artwork will find home in a very suitable contempo-rary art gallery, built to accomodate it and to revitalize the surround-ing area of New Orleans. The context site is downtown New Orleans, one of the busiest parts of the city. The current Arts Foundation Headquarters is located in this area, and the proposed site is an adjacent parking lot to the exisiting building. The immediate area is extremely fitting, as it lays claim to many high and low end commer-cial sites, the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, Lafeyette Square, and is only a few short blocks away from the Mississippi River. The parking square adjacent to the Arts Foundation Headquarters is 5000 square feet of city owned developmental land, and will be purchased at approximately $100 per sf. based on current local coding require-ments. This land will provide ample space for the design proposal of the museum, brought forth by Danish Architecture Firm BIG: Bjarke Ingels Group. Bjarke and his team based in the Netherlands were estatic when asked to design this expansion, quoted saying “Archi-tecture is most appealing with simple lines and clear ideas. A city, on the other hand, becomes alive when it is rich with experiences and surprises. I am honored with this oppurtunity to revitalize the New Orleans community through art and architecture”. The museum itself will be based on four distinct galleries, each representing a key part of New Orleans; nature, color, pop-art, and hope. My hope as the key coordinator to this project, and Bjarke’s hope as the principal architect will be to work together and create a new revitalizing and cultural face to the New Orleans downtown metro.

_ Mission Statement

The Arts Foundation Headquarters in New Orleans is a long standing organization that prides itself on the pure ideal that art can provide a community with rich cultural benefits as well as the ability to revitalize itself through the arts. As one of the leading foundations for art in the United States of America, our foundation delivers and provides the Community the opportunity to enjoy access to, and benefits from, significant cultural activities related to live performances, music, dance, film and related entertainment in its Head-quarters for the Arts. This facility will encourage, promote and support local and regional artists and performance companies. It will offer a venue to schools, community groups and residents to experience and participate in workshops and rehearsals. The Arts Foundation in New Orleans positive impact is designed to extend beyond the Headquarters by generating, coordinating and awarding scholarships, grants and subsidies to students, artists and other deserving talents. The foundation has recently been awarded a grant from the United States Government and the City of New Orleans allowing it to open its doors to new and inspiring contemporary artists, through the design and construction of a new art wing associated with the foundation. The goal of this major foundation undertaking is to work on creating a new exciting destination in the city of New Orleans, that will awe and inspire the future of art and cultural synthe-sis in the city. Also as a deliverable goal, the foundation will hope to revitalize the immediate community through attention to the arts, creating an atmosphere of education and hope for a better future.

_ Collecting Statement

The collecting statement of the Art Foundation Headquarters in New Orleans is to work with different themes presented in the city to create a unique balance of work, defining the culture and people that live in the area. The Arts Foundation calls for an absolute revitalization of the urban context, helping the city bounce back to its former glory through the help of arts, music, and cultural backgrounds. Much of the collected work will adhere to the love of excitement and elation in the city, playing off the ideas of color, vibra-cy, and absolute delight. The city is a cultural melting pot, and the work should symbolize this through differ-ent medium, artist race, and through the content of the collection. This idea comes from the age old tradi-tion of Mardi Gras, complementing the excitment that the city itself has formed. The gallery spaces them-selves will be unified through division; different themed galleries based on the culture and vibrance of the city. Each will represent a different aspect of New Orleans, and they will all be unified in the way that they work together as a whole contemporary art museum. The gallery themes are nature, color, pop, and hope. New Orleans became what it is because of its location, and because of the nature of its surround-ings. The first gallery pay homage and tributes this idea. The color gallery is large and distinct, with works that expose color in its most beautiful form. These works emphasize the livliness of the city, and its heritage. The third gallery is a homage to artists that define their work as pop, exciting, and dramatic. These works are uniquely tied to each other through how they portray their emotion. Lastly, the hope gallery features work that emphasizes the future of New Orleans, through revitilazation and through archi-tecture. Each gallery uniquely represents itself with the works of different artists of many different move-ments, and they all come together to revitalize the community.
