InspirationsMy inspirations were mainly the mobiles at the Kansai Airport. It intrigued me to see how the mobile moved without any wind being present and that the intricacy of the construction of each piece was made in such a way that it’s able to move without any push from the wind. Another inspiration were the flying devices found in Hayao Miazaki’s movies. The wings of the aircrafts were shaped in such a way that it seemed almost alien, but its rapid motions resembled that of how insects fly.

Design Intentions

What will be abstractly expressed in terms of personal qualities an characteristics that will impact the “personality” of the design?

- In the design, I want to express a lightweight appearance with the term “floating on air” coming in mind. Since I want constant movement (mainly spinning) , I want to give off a whimsical feeling. Being so inspired by the mobiles at the Kansai Airport, I want to mimic the idea that’s always moving with or without the power of wind.

To what will the design respond in terms of the site’s context (physical aspects, local activity, climactic aspects (e.g. air movement, light, sun, wind, temperature, rain, etc.)

- I want most of the design to be crafted with a sturdy yet translucent skin. As each piece of the design work moves, I want the light to be able to penetrate the translucent skin by utilizing both artificial and natural light. Ideally, I’d like to place it next to a window and closer towards the ceiling, so as you look up, you’ll be able to see light passing through while each piece of the design is constantly moving/spinning.

Site Proposal

The site I propose to use is any spot that has both artificial and natural lighting. The design will be place underneath the artificial light, but will be low enough so some natural light can be incorporated to the design-work. It will be hanged above a table so if it falls, it won’t harm anyone and it’ll be easy to access it to take it and put it back up.
