ndia has a rich tradition of path breaking ideas, from the zero in abstract mathematics, to
the daily jugaad, ingenious improvisation to make up for missing systems and scarce
resources. Selling paint in 100 ml tins and shampoo in sachets are India's contribution to Iglobal marketing strategies. From the lowest cost car to low-cost water purifiers and
dozens of tech innovations, including a way to have email on phones without GPRS, are being

man to do so, has aroused a sense of awe. Dr. Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, who created a biotech company in her garage, has given new
hopes to poor cancer victims by devoting $10 million to creating the 400- bed Mazumdar Shaw cancer centre in India where poor
patients will be treated for free in the evenings, apart from donating $ 2 million to support help insurance coverage for 100,000 Indian

the modern worlds in buildings so rudimentary; they have dirt floors and no chairs. These “barefoot professionals” then return
home to use their new skills as solar engineers, teachers, weavers, architects, doctors and more.
Nitin Nohria, an IIT- Bombay alumnus has broken one of the highest glass ceilings in the world with his appointment as the dean of
Harvard Business School. A scholar of leadership and organizational change, Nohria is keen on forging a vision for Harvard
Business School that will enable it to remain a beacon for business education for the next 100 years.
The IITian turned cop Ashok Kumar has evolved the need of a pro-active people oriented approach in policing, which he has
practiced in his career and brought out effectively in his book 'Human In Khaki'.
We are as yet building much of social and physical infrastructure that ideas need to bloom in to creation of a new value. We carry all
the power we need inside ourselves already: We have the power to imagine better and we have power to culminate dreams in to
reality.

th thWith this 11 April 2010, Resonance has successfully entered in its 10 year. I wish to congratulate all my old & new students and all my staff members whose persistently diligent efforts have made this possible. The hard work and labor of my students and staff members that goes in making the brand “Resonance” different, powerful and dependable is sincerely appreciable and it is very much evident from our results of IIT-JEE 2010.
A message of hope
ANUNAAD, July- September 2010 5
IIT-JEE 2010 results opined a new spectrum of progress. Crossing the mark of 1000 selections from Classroom Programmes and achieving almost 50% result of total Hindi medium selected students from the entire country have been accomplishments of remarkable significance. Appreciable increase in the result of girls from 161 in 2009 to 265 in 2010 and the increase in the result of each and every study centre such as Jaipur 86 over 47, Bhopal 42 over 18, Delhi 51 over 19, Lucknow 25 over 13, Kolkata 8 over 2, Mumbai 13 over 10 and Nagpur 27 over 5 of the previous year speak of consistent progress of Resonance. The total classroom result is increased by 25% from 859 to 1078. 14 All India Ranks in top 100 (4 from Yearlong Classroom Contact Programmes and 10 from Distance Learning Programmes) with Mehul Kumar securing AIR-19 (GEN), Gautam Sumu obtaining AIR-36 (GEN), Kanishk Katariya achieving AIR-44 in General Category and AIR-1 in SC Category and Kumar Gautam attaining AIR-60 (GEN), all from Yearlong Classroom Contact Programmes, make Resonance feel proud.
Mehul Kumar Sharma, a meritorious student of Yearlong Classroom Contact Programme (YCCP) of Jaipur Study Centre of Resonance has proven the talent of a genius with distinguished mental prowess which he developed by regular practicing and quick improving. Apart from cracking IIT-JEE 2010 with All Indian Rank (AIR)-19 (GEN) and AIEEE 2010 with AIR-76, he is also one of the five finalists
stwho got selected to represent India in the 41 International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) to be held in Zagreb, Croatia. Amit Panghal, also a ndstudent from our Yearlong Classroom Contact Programme at Jaipur Study Centre got selected for the final stage of 42 International
thChemistry Olympiad (IChO) 2010 to be held from July 19th to July 28 2010 in JAPAN. He not only qualified IIT-JEE 2010 with All India Rank (AIR) -563 (General Category) but also AIEEE with AIR 364.
VICTORY, the Felicitation Function for IIT-JEE -2010 qualified students from Resonance unraveled the proverbial potential of successful students, was organized on June 8, 2010, helped the students in getting familiar with counseling procedure, selection of branches and institutes. Students and faculty members from other centres witnessed the fruits of the indubitable hard work at Resonance. I, on behalf of Resonance wish my selected students a great future ahead, full of fame, success and happiness.
Resonance had taken an initiative in 2009 to support those students who had utilized their both the attempts in IIT-JEE by starting a course 'AJAY' which met its objective with 83% students succeeding with good ranks. Resonance's students from IIT-JEE division have secured 24, 76, 81, 92, & 93 in top 100 in AIEEE 2010 while cracking IIT-JEE 2010. The fact that 8678 students (Classroom Contact Programme: 6187, Distance Learning Programmes: 2416 & AJAY: 75) from Resonance have achieved success in AIEEE 2010 is an assurance to all JEE aspirants that their hard work will pay them well in other exams also.
IIT-JEE 2010 cutoff has been 190 marks over 178 for the General Category, 171 marks over 161 in OBC and 95 marks over 89 in SC/ST and PD Category in 2009. The analysis reveals that the pattern of the questions was not new for Resonance students but there are few things to learn. Students should make efforts to improve the speed so that even a lengthy paper could be managed well. There were too many calculations in the questions this time. The students should therefore attempt at developing their calculation skills instead of depending on calculators while practicing at home.
Here, I take an opportunity to also welcome my new students of academic session 2010-11 (VIKAAS, VISHWAAS, VISHESH, VIPUL & VIJAY courses) who have trusted in Resonance to fulfill their dreams to victoriously turn them into reality. Our 'VIJETA' students have already won half the battle. Students of 'VISHWAAS' course can learn from their predecessors who have headed for IITs with their unfailing efforts in 2010. Repeater batch students can depend on the 60% result share of Resonance's successful students of 2010. I assure that with your complete support Resonance with a pool of capable faculty team will certainly benefit you all to help you realize your dreams easily.
Lets all try to differentiate ourselves with hard work, persistence and perseverance.

Artificial blood vessels developed from jatropha

A biodegradable polymer recently d e v e l o p e d f r o m J a t r o p h a h a v e attracted researchers from IIT-Madras to work towards a project in this direction. The IITians, a Thiruvananthapuram-based medical institute Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences & Technology (SCTIMST) and a Belgium-based multi-national company have evinced interest in the polymer developed by a Gujarat-based national research institute.
The Central Salt Marine Chemicals and Research Institute (CSMCRI) located in Bhavnagar district of the state has hit upon a process by which biodegradable polymers can be developed at almost zero-cost using one of the byproducts of Jatropha a drought-resistant perennial plant that grows even in sandy and saline conditions.
The polymer could be used in spinning thin hollow fibers which could act as a substitute for blood vessels.
Synthetic grafts in humans are often required in various vascular bypass surgeries. Such surgery is done to open blocked arteries in one part of the body by using a vessel from elsewhere in the body.
However, up to 40% of patients (especially those who are diabetic) don't have a vessel suitable for the procedure. In such cases, surgeons use synthetic grafts or artificial blood vessels.
While IITians are looking to develop artificial blood vessels, a Kerala-based institute is looking at the possibilities to develop nano particulate systems which could be used in developing medical instruments for targeted delivery of drugs.
The success of the polymer has also attracted the country's Department of Science and Technology which has floated a proposal to fund 70% of the project cost, provided the institute has an industry partner who can fund the remaining 30% of the cost.
Tomorrow's Classroom!
After half-a-century of being an
exclusive club, the Indian Institutes of
Technology will finally open their
gates wider. Assigned the task of
reaching out to more Indian students,
IIT directors are drawing up plans to
s e t u p a v i r t u a l u n i v e r s i t y .
IIT-Madras director M S Ananth said,
“We basically want to make quality
education accessible to many more
students using modern tools instead of
s e t t i n g u p b r i c k a n d - m o r t a r
campuses.''
Ananth added that the details were
being to be worked out and the plan
would be rolled out over two years.
' 'We will involve industry in
administering the programme.
Moreover, we need to create labs
w h e r e s t u d e n t s c a n p e r f o r m
experiments. The IITs will take care of
the entry, the exit and develop the
courses,''
The IITs and the Bangalore-based
Indian Institute of Science have
already designed 240 courses that
were captured on video in studios set
up in the institutes. They will develop
1,000 more courses in the second
phase. The IITs have also run pilots on
virtual labs. The Union human
resource development ministry has
allotted Rs 4,600 crore for three years
till March 2012 and virtual labs will be
created.
The idea of a virtual technical
university was first mooted by the P
Rama Rao Committee, which looked
at expanding quality engineering
education across the country in 2006

National Aptitudes Test & higher
weightage for class XII marks
recommended by HRD Panel
In what may mark a major shift away
from the current scheme of admission to
the country's bluechip engineering
institutions, an HRD ministry panel has
recommended 70% weightage to class
XII marks and 30% for performance in an
aptitude test to be conducted more than
once a year, for the IIT-Joint Entrance
Examination. A cut-off list on the basis of
the class XII result and the aptitude test
will be prepared in the month of June
every year and the top 40,000 will have to
take the additional test for IITs. Right
now, more than four lakh students
appear for IIT-JEE in a single test. The
panel headed by Damodar Acharya,
director of IIT Kharagpur, that gave its
report to HRD minister Kapil Sibal on
Wednesday, has also suggested that the
aptitude test be an ongoing affair which
students can take more than once.
However, the best score in the aptitude
test -- which will have questions on
reasoning, numerical ability and
communication skills -- should be taken
into account. It is only the add-on test for
the top students that will have questions
on physics, mathematics and chemistry.
HRD sources said the ministry's first task
would be to bring all state boards as well
as CBSE on par with each other by
developing a comprehensive weighted
performance index so that there is no
gross inequality among them and
students do not suffer. Already, a core
science and mathematics syllabus has
been mooted by the HRD ministry and
approved by the Council of Board of
Secondary Education. "The move will
ensure that students from small towns
and even those who cannot afford
expensive coaching can aim to be in
IITs," an HRD source said.

he technocratic civilization
has made colossal strides
world over, amidst which
India stands tall and proud. TNitin Nohria, an iconic
Indian, heads an iconic institute,
Harvard Business School, as a dean.
Nohria's profile is the testimony of his
expertise not only in his subject but also
in harboring a perfect attitude of
generosity. After graduating from the
Indian Institute of Technology -Bombay
(IIT-B) in Chemical Engineering in 1984,
he went on to receive a doctoral degree
from Massachusetts Institute of
Technology (MIT) in 1988, immediately
after which he joined Harvard Business
School and served in the prestigious
position of the Richard P Chapman
Professor of Business Administration
since 1999. He has also published several
significant works in his field.
Nitin Nohria is truly proud of his
heritage and his dynamic grooming at
IIT-Bombay. He believes that he would
not have achieved anything without the
significant contribution of IIT-Bombay
in shaping his personality and
enhancing his mental dexterity. He was
able to make a big leap (by entering
Harvard Business School) only because
of the strong foundation developed at
IIT-Bombay with which he explored
extraordinary opportunities with
Harvard Business School (HBS). Over
the last 22 years, he has traveled across
the world and performed research in
almost all parts of the world. And that
has given him a global perspective that
he thinks is very useful in shaping
ANUNAAD, July- September 2010
contemporary businesses and
business education.
Nohria has been able to keep the four
drives (Drive to Acquire, Drive to
Bond, Drive to Learn and Drive to
Defend) in perfect balance. He
pursued the first drive which is
achievement (drive) and feels proud of
his successful career. For ‘the drive to
bond’, he feels blessed for the bonds he
has with his family and friends. Being
an academician, he certainly pursues
the drive to learn each day and all the
time and this is the most important
drive for him to which he is sincerely
committed. And in terms of the drive
to defend, he stood for a cause, a cause
to defend the terror attacks in
Mumbai.
According to him, IIT-Bombay taught
him to grapple and survive under any
circumstance and because of which he
has successfully survived the
challenges at America. He feels very
indebted to his alma mater, IIT-
Bombay, for having prepared him for
the vicissitudes of life. He completely
trusts that he couldn't have been at
HBS without having imbibed the
leaning at IIT-Bombay.

organizational behavior unit, as senior
associate dean for faculty development,
and as co-chair of the school's leadership
initiative. Professor Nitin Nohria was
awarded with a medal for the
distinguished alumnus in 2007 in IIT-
Bombay. He earned the outstanding
doctoral thesis award in behavioral and
policy sciences while pursuing his Ph.D.
in management from MIT's Sloan School
of Management. He is a co-author of 16
books, including “What Really Works:
The 4+2 Formula for Sustained Business
Success,” which is a systematic large-
scale study of management practices
that truly differentiates business
winners. His most recent, Handbook of
Leadership Theory and Practice, is a
compendium dedicated to advancing
research on leadership based on a
colloquium he organized during HBS's
centennial celebrations.
Professor Nitin Nohria, in his own
teaching and research exemplifies the
school's (Harvard) strong commitment
to both academic rigor and its relevance
to practice. He has a global outlook and
an instinct of collaboration across
territorial boundaries that promise to
don the Business School with new
panorama. He not only studies
leadership but embodies qualities of
leadership in how he engages with
people and ideas, how he thinks about
organizational change, and how he sees
the consequential challenges facing
business schools and the business world.
He is someone with both a deep
knowledge of HBS and its distinctive
culture and a clear appetite for
innovation and change in the service of

sustaining HBS's preeminence among
business schools world wide.
“I feel a profound sense of responsibility
with business education at an inflection
point, we must strive to equip future
leaders with competence & character,”
says Professor Nitin Nohria.
Nohria who succeeds Jay Light believes
that an individual has to be different and
distinct in order to achieve something
substantial and should “think out of box”
which he was lucky enough to have been
taught by IIT-Bombay.
His experimental mind always searched
for new and novel ideas. For hours
together he used to experiment with
different chemicals in the laboratory at
IIT-Bombay. His professors did
recognize his potential and understood
that he was a perfect cut out for
management as well which he later on
proved to be the one. His academic
interests include the theory and practice
of leadership, the study of human
motivation, the analysis of management
practices critical to corporate success,
and the strategic and organizational
challenges of globalization.
According to him leadership suffers
intellectual neglect and has yet to be
considered a serious academic discipline
and as an academician he focuses on
developing leaders who can make a
difference in the world. In his opinion,
business leaders play a crucial role in
shaping industries and in turn how the
evolving context of industries shapes
leaders.
A s c h o l a r o f l e a d e r s h i p a n d
organizational change, Nohria has
always played a significant role in his
approach towards academia, a trend he
intends to carry forward into his
administration. Nitin Nohria opines that
Harvard has always been committed to
coming into India, and he too looks
forward to strengthen the ties.
Nohria's appointment breaks one of
the highest glass ceilings in the world
and with India's importance on the
global economic stage on the ascent;
Nohria has plans to take HBS's India
initiatives forward.
With Nohria taking the reins of one of
the world's most iconic universities, it
is believed that he will strengthen the
relationship between Harvard and
Indian Academia. He will take up new
initiatives and case studies that will be
developed at HBS with focus on India.
His continuous profound sense of
responsibility for ongoing Harvard
Business School's proud legacy of

experiences will strive to equip future
leaders with the competence and
character to address emerging global
business and social challenges. He is
happy to work with the School's
faculty, staff, students, and alumni to
forge a vision for Harvard Business
School that will enable it to remain a
beacon for business education for the
next 100 years.
An IIT-Bombay alumnus certainly
proves his mettle by occupying one of
the prestigious positions in the world.
He says, “If you are generous, life
gives you more than you can
imagine”. ‘Generosity’ is one of the
important values that has made him a
good student and a renowned
academician and a much loved
business teacher.
For Nohria, to laugh often and much;
to win the respect of intelligent people
and the affection of children...to leave
the world a better place...to know even
one life has breathed easier because
you have l ived- maintaining
simplicity and generosity are life’s
basic lessons.

Thanks Asim,
you have done
a tremendous job
sk people to name
great leaders and
chances are they
will choose a person
who “ fought to Aimprove the state of
the world” in one way or another;
Gandhi, perhaps or Winston Churchill.
Individuals who turn a genius within
and personify it for a cause, a cause to
benefit the society at large are the leaders
in real sense. This means that any serious
examination of what it means to be a
leader must include the recognition that
one can be responsible for causing a
great good and exactly this has been
accomplished by the contemporary
leader who is none other than Asim
Ghosh.
While there has been a radical progress
with regard to consumer behavior and
tele-communication, analyzing the
telecom rituals of consumers is critical to
sustain brands after they have been
created with powerful associations.
Asim Ghosh headed Vodafone Essar's
telecom operations in India, which in the
past ten years has grown from a one city
licence of 140,000 subscribers to over 35
million subscribers in a pan national
footprint. An indirect interest in one of
the largest ever cash acquisitions in Asia,
was acquired by Vodafone in May 2007.
Asim Ghosh turned Vodafone Essar
into India's second-largest cellular
phone company. He was at the helm of
Vodafone Essar, earlier branded as
Orange, then Hutch.
The Indian market is one of the biggest
revenue generators for Vodafone
globally.
The biggest achievement of Asim
Ghosh was the valuation of Hutchison
while it was being taken over by
Vodafone. His strategic insights,
coupled with memorable advertising,
made Vodafone a popular brand in the
country.
Mr. Ghosh is likely to head the oil
business of Canada's Husky Energy
owned by Hong Kong's richest man,
business tycoon Li Ka-shing.
Mr. Li i s a lso the owner of
conglomerate Hutchison Whampoa,
whose foray into Indian telecom in the
late 1990s provided Mr. Ghosh an
opportunity to win his spurs as an
uber-manager by building a profitable
business in a sector known for
ferocious tariff cutting and cash-rich
rivals such as the Reliance Group and
Sunil Mittal's Bharti Airtel.
Mr. Ghosh obtained an undergraduate
degree in Electrical Engineering from
the Indian Institute of Technology-
Delhi (IIT-D) in 1969 and an MBA from
the Wharton School, University of
Pennsylvania in 1971.
He commenced his career in consumer
goods marketing with Procter & Gamble
in the U.S. and Canada, and worked
s u b s e q u e n t l y w i t h R o t h m a n s
International as a Board member of one
of Canada's major breweries. He moved
to Asia in 1989 as co-Managing Director
of the Pepsi Foods start up in India.
Thereafter, he was in executive positions
with Hutchison in Hong Kong and in
India for the past 16 years, and continued
as the Managing Director of Vodafone
Essar Limited since its acquisition.
It was after he went to Hong Kong in
1991 to start a joint venture between
Pepsi and Hutchison that his association
with the ports-to-telecom conglomerate
began. Mr. Ghosh ran Hutchison's
consumer goods business for a while
before returning to India in 1998 as
managing director of Hutchison's
telecom joint venture with Analjit
Singh's Max India.
His rich and mesmerizing account not
only emanates his business expertise but
also glorifies his sound education in the
Indian Institute of Technology Delhi.
Truly is he symbolic of success with
focus and determination and by any
means is a true leader.

Man who made rapid
inroads to help the society
is truly a deserving

idea l ized for h is
determination, perseverance and his
commitment to serve the society.
Hailing from the small village of Kurana,
at Panipat district in Haryana, it was 'a
dream come true' for Ashok Kumar to be
an IITian. However, when Kumar
realized his interest was in serving the
people, he decided to join the Indian
Police Service (IPS). Kumar received his
primary education from a village school
and went on to pursue a B.Tech. in
mechanical engineering and an M.Tech.
in thermal engineering from Indian
Inst i tute of Technology- Delhi
(IIT-Delhi). He was awarded with the
best writer of the year award in 1986-87
at IIT-Delhi. He is an avid reader of
Hindi, English, Bangla and Russian
literature. His other interests include
Badminton, Tennis, Riding and
organizing sports events.
Mr. Ashok Kumar (IPS), till recently
has served in the capacity of Inspector
General of Police (IGP), Garwhal and
IGP Kumaon. He is presently on
deputation with the Central Reserve
Police Force in Delhi. He joined the
Indian Police Service in 1989 and took
up various challenging assignments
in the states of UP and Uttarakhand.
He received the UN Medal for serving
in strife torn Kosovo in the year 2001.
He was honored with the Indian
Police Medal in the year 2006 by the
President of India for his long and
meritorious services for Indian Police .
He believes that it is difficult for an
individual to take career decisions at
the school level as it is little tedious for
an ordinary to introspect and decide
what one wants to pursue in one's life.
Until and unless one is extremely clear
and focus in one's future goals.
Decisions at an early stage are primarily
guided by others. It's only on-the-job
when one realizes the nuances of a job
and can decide on the future prospects to
be carried on for the rest of the life.
According to Kumar, IIT teaches one to
be effective, efficient and excellent in
every walk of life, and this helped
Kumar in becoming a successful IPS. He
efficiently handled the responsibilities of
an IPS and realized that his strength lies
in helping the poor, the needy and the
suppressed.
Mr. Kumar quips, “As I had put in more
years of service in the police force, at
various stations, in various capacities, it
became quite clear to me that despite of
all the odds, I had been able to make a
difference in the lives of the common
man and this has always been my goal.”
ANUNAAD, July- September 2010 12
Kumar authored the book, “Human in
Khaki”, with Lokesh Ohri, a writer,
anthropologist and arts and heritage
activist. The book is not a biography and
also it is not a work of research. It does
not seek to preach anyone, but just
strings together anecdotes and thoughts
from a policeman's life in the hope that
society as a whole may gain from this
effort of a written real life experience.
Emphasizing the need of a pro-active
people-oriented policing, Dr. Kiran Bedi
released the book- “Human in Khaki”, a
book of 163 pages, published by
Bookworld, Dehradun. The book is
hard-hitting as it speaks on the
contemporary issues and the changing
value system of the society that bedevils
the society today. Authored by
Mr. Ashok Kumar (IPS) with Mr. Lokesh
Ohri, the book urges the common man to
know about his rights.
The Book allows the public at large to
peep into the working of the Indian
Police. The book serves as a mirror to
men in uniform. It portrays the
functioning of the Indian Police and at
the same time also encourages the
common man to ensure his/her safety.
The book's appeal holds equally for the
government officials and for the
ordinary citizens who in turn expect
good governance.
The meticulously woven stories describe
the varying and challenging outcomes
which could have been worse, had the
officers not been sensitive and
perceptive to the needs of the ordinary
individuals approaching them without
the usual crutches of wealth or influence.
Covering all contemporary issues
corrupting the society today- from
terrorism to kidnaping, land grabbing to
women's molestation, incidents of
harassment by SMSs to eve teasing,
extortion to corruption, the widening
gap between the haves and the have-nots
and its impact on society - 'Human in
Khaki' is an eye-opener for not only the
masses but also for the police officials.
It talks candidly about the erosion of
values in society today and also the
struggles of a common man who wish
to stand up for simple yet essential
values that bind this country tightly,
despite its screaming contrasts and
inequities.
The book makes a good policeman to
quiz himself on the following note-
worthy questions:
1. Will my actions be good for the
society?
2. Will my actions help the person who
is in need?
3. Will my actions bring relief to the
victim?
4. Will my actions deter the
wrongdoer?
When the answers of these questions
positively echo in one's heart, one can
certainly boast of being a good
policeman who has justified his
existence & purpose.
The gripping narrative, written in a
simple and lucid style, brings out
happenings of real-life situations from
a distinguished career, spanning over
twenty years, in the Indian Police
Force of an IITian turned cop, who
adopted a humane approach to public
service, trying to create a culture of
people-friendly policing. “Human in
Khaki” is a collection of select 16 short
stories setting a precedent on how
police officers uphold their human
sensitivity while dealing with people
and look at the problem from the
victim's point of view and it is through
this approach, the system in turn
delivers the results. Undoubtedly,
Kumar has not only proved his merit
by excelling in studies but beautifully
used the learning in a pragmatic way
for the benefit of the society.

'HOW TO REAP THE BEST' TIPS FROM
NAMAN SANDEEP KOTHARINAMAN SANDEEP KOTHARIReso Roll No: 720244 AIR : 396 (Year : 2009)
IIT- Bombay Branch: Mechanical Engineering
Q 1. What is required to get into Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT)?
Ans: According to me, sincere efforts
and commitment towards one's goal of
cracking IIT-JEE successfully are the key
factors to get into IITs. Not mere
intelligence but also dedication is a must
to get into IITs and also to secure a good
All India Rank (AIR).
Q 2. How much time on an average did you devote for your preparation? What was your daily time-table and how did you divide your course according to your set time-table?
Ans: Apart from Coaching Classes, I
used to devote 5 to 6 hours for my
studies. I did not follow any stringent
time-table. For me it all depended on the
level of toughness of the matter which I
used to study daily. I gave priority to my
notes and tried to understand them
properly. I used to do DPP's and the
problems in sheets rigorously.
Q 3. How does one cope up with the school syllabus and preparation for IIT-JEE? Did you take extra efforts to prepare for board examination?
Ans: Preparation for IIT-JEE covers most
of the school syllabus and so a student
need not take any pressure to complete
the school syllabus separately. Reading
of entire text-books is a must for both IIT-
JEE and board examinations. I paid
special attention to English and
prepared thoroughly for it.
Q 4. How many questions should an individual attempt to get into IITs? How tough is the paper?
Ans: One should attempt all the
questions in which one is confident. It is
also necessary that one should first go
through the entire paper so that one may
get a fair idea about the type of questions
the paper contains because of which one
may prioritize the questions to be
attempted first. IIT-JEE paper is not an
extra ordinarily tough one but it is
similar to that of the papers and tests
which are conducted on a regular
basis at Resonance. The most
important thing in the examination
hall is to maintain one's cool and clam
so that the IIT-JEE paper can be taken
with ease and peace.
Q 5. Give some tips for increasing one's efficiency while studying? How did you refresh yourself from the hectic schedule?
Ans: While solving the questions, I
used to listen to music as it helped me
increase my efficiency. Also, I am not
habitual of studying at a stretch and so
would take small breaks of a few
minutes in an hour because of which I
used to feel refreshed. Taking
adequate sleep is a must, and one
should not compromise with it. After
hours of study, I would go for a walk
with my friends and on the way we
used to discuss the problems
(questions) of the day.
Q 6. What is your Success mantra? Give some advice to your successors at Resonance who are preparing for IIT-JEE?
Ans: One must always be dedicated
towards the goal- “IIT-JEE”; even a
slightest deviation from the goal may
cause problem in achieving it.
Resonance is blessed with a very good
faculty, so all the IIT-JEE aspirants
must make the best of the faculty
members. Always revise the notes
properly as they are a good source of
revision. Revision is a very important
tool and proves useful if practiced
throughout the year and rigorously in
the last 5-6 months.
Q7. How did you evaluate your performance after each CT (cumulative Test), APT (AIEEE Preparatory Test) & JPT (JEE Preparatory Test) while preparing at Resonance?
Ans: After each exam, I used to properly analyze my paper with the answer key given. I would study all the answers and then used to check that the problems attempted are right or wrong. This helped me in finding out a new ways to solve specif ic questions. While analyzing the paper, I used to note down my mistakes in a diary and every time before the exam, I would read that diary so that the mistakes may not re-occur.
Q 8. Whom do you wish to give the credit of your success? To what extent did your family contribute in your success?
Ans: It is because of the support of my family, my faculty members at Resonance as well as my teachers at school that I achieved AIR-396. Taking 'International Olympiad Examination' increased my morale. My parents have immensely contributed in my success. M y m o t h e r ' s p r e s e n c e a n d unconditional support in the last 3-4 months before the conduction of IIT-JEE motivated me and helped me in maintaining my cool & calm. She helped me recover from my illness during winters.
Q 9. Appearing for Open Test (OT) & Major Test (MT), did in some way help scaling your proficiency in different subjects for IIT-JEE?
Ans: The detailed analysis provided by Resonance after the OT and the MT helped me a lot in figuring out my weak areas which required a lot of improvement. These tests also gave me a fair idea about the pattern and type of IIT-JEE paper.

uring one of his sojourns, the Guru gave his
students a thin book to learn from while he
was away for about a week. On his return,
the guru asked them all whether they had
learned the lessons he had given them. All
answered positively except his favorite Dstudent. He had not done the lessons.
The teacher asked him again in the hope that maybe there was some
communication problem or may be he had not heard him well. The
student again answered that he had learned only one line from the
book. The teacher blasted him saying “ONE WEEK AND ONLY A
LINE” and again the boy had the impudence to say that he had learnt
just one line.
The Guru then smacked the boy across his face but the boy kept his face
down in complete submission to his Guru. The guru's face was still livid
with rage, thinking may be the boy was joking at his expense and again
he asked his favorite student “how much did you learn?” “only one line”
answered the boy. The guru got ferocious and his voice roared and
resounded in the ashram and even the other disciples got frightened.
The Guru asked him to get out of his sight and the boy, wiping away his
tears, went to a secluded corner of the Ashram while the rest went for
their duties.
‘Time’ it is said is the best healer!
In a couple of hours as the Guru retained his calm and was handling
other matters, he thought over the incident again and felt sorry for the
boy as he had never slapped any boy in his ashram and that too when
the boy was his favorite.
He sent for the boy and the boy stood before him
humble in his manner. The guru placed his hand on
the boy's head and gently asked him, “My dear, show
me what is the one line you have learnt?” The student
opened the book to the first page and the only line he
had taken over a week to learn was “Learn to control
and be a master of your anger”. Seeing this Guru's
hand trembled and the book slipped out of it. Guru's
heart filled up with remorse as it was his duty to
teach the students about life but in a week, the boy
had learnt a lesson that he (the Guru) failed to learn.
The Guru embraced the boy hiding his tears.
The student taught his own teacher and the student
became the father of “MAN”. The boy grew up to be
known as Dharmraj Yudhisthir and the guru was
Guru Dronacharya.
Yudhisthir did exactly what needs to be done today.
He took the lessons (idealism) from the book and
brought it into real life and gave them a form in real
life. No wonder the epithet “Dharmraj” became his
title of address.
The lesson to be learnt is that one must honor the
Guru under all circumstances. If Guru Dronacharya
had not gotten angry, Yudhisthir would never have
learnt the importance of controlling his anger.
In the momentary loss of sanity that Dronacharya
took upon himself, he showed his other students and
generations to come, the folly of losing one's temper
even though he may have to bear the ignominy of
being a short tempered flawed preceptor,
Dronacharya is a Guru in the truest sense with no
desire for anything and Yudhisthir is a student,
ready to sacrifice everything for the Guru.
Truly it is said in the Vedas
May the Guru be ever blessed!

His parents lauded the co-operation of
faculty members and teaching methodology practiced at Resonance. Kota for IIT-JEE coaching but I always discouraged and said that schools can also provide better education and coaching. But today after Kumar Gautam achieving AIR- 60 in IIT-JEE 2010, I believe that in order to secure better rank in IIT-JEE and competitive exams, one should opt coaching as it is the best medium of meticulous guidance.”

Engineering, technology, Architecture,
Science and Pharmacy in colleges across
the country, including IITs. The GATE is
held in 22 different disciplines and some
of the disciplines see up to 40000 test-
takers every year with only about 300
making it to IITs.
ASSESSMENTS
IT-BHU is consistently ranked among
the top ten technology schools in India.
In May, 2005, a survey of engineering
schools ranked IT-BHU at number 5
overall, and at number 1 in the
development of "Intellectual Capital".
Many of its departments, called branches,
come under the distinguished category of

His mathematical insight and
scientific flair helped him devise a
mechanism for fair allocation of
indivisible objects in the case when
there are multiple objects and bidders
and object valuations are same over
bidders. Till date, he is studying the
properties of the auction. He wrote a
paper (internal paper for IMRB al

years have been exhilarating for the
institution. From a fledging new startup,
the school has grown in infrastructure
and stature and is now counted as one of
the finest institution for education from
Pre-primary to Senior Secondary Level
in the city of Udaipur.
The growth of MDS is remarkable in its
own. This all comes from nowhere but
the sheer hard work of management and
staff members who always work in team
and are always dedicated towards the
b e t t e r m e n t o f t h e i r c h i l d r e n .
Contribution of the enlightened parents
of the students of MDS also has been a significant factor in the continuous improvement of the institution as a whole.
Each school has its own character and its own distinct & identifiable 'personality'. The integration of academic excellence, professional learning and cultural values is one of the unique strengths of MDS.
With a mission to grow and progress every day, every week, every month and every year, MDS aspires to soar higher and higher. Till date, MDS family has been able to achieve its goals with perfection. With the unabated growth, the institution is reaching greater heights and establishing itself firmly as one of the finest educational institutions in India.
In an effort to mentor the prestigious school in terms of successful IIT-JEE coaching, Resonance is offering its Classroom training to IIT-JEE aspirants of Udaipur in collaboration with MDS Sr. Sec. The combined strength of exceptional and highly experienced faculty of Resonance, courseware of Resonance and the pioneering initiative of MDS
Sr. Sec. School is bound to give IIT-JEE
aspirants a privileged beginning and
solid foundation for IIT-JEE.
Mr. Somani is instrumental in leveraging
the strengths of his school by fetching it
more in terms of knowledge, experience
and keeping the students abreast with
the latest and the new.
The institution strives to amalgamate
both the dimensions of educational
process that is Personality and
Knowledge. A unique Child Media Lab
has been established to impart education
through an innovative approach. The
ultimate aim of the institution is to
develop its students into confident,
smart, intelligent, awakened and
responsible jewels of the society and the
nation in turn.
A journey that began with a single room
and 12 students has stupendously grown
to a huge school with an infrastructure
spread over 3 acres of land with 1300

Mr. Somani is symbolic of his
exceptional skills. He is the one who
believes in maintaining a high note in life
and did it all for the betterment of the
society and has induced the same
optimism and determination to surpass
mediocrity in the working ethos and
mission statement of his school.

GROWTH DEPENDS ON HORMONES OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP
orn on 28th July 1955,
founder of Mankind
group, Mr. R.C. Juneja is
an inspiration in himself.
He started his career in B1974 with Kee Pharma as
Medical Representative. In 1975, he
joined Lupin and worked there as first
Line Manager. In 1983, he resigned from
Lupin and started his own company
Bostochem in partnership. In 1994, he
w i t h d r e w h i s o w n e r s h i p f r o m
Bestochem and 1995 founded ‘Mankind
Pharma’ with his younger brother
Mr. Rajeev Juneja.
Under Mr. R.C. Juneja, 'Mankind' has
met a complete metamorphosis in a span
of 14 years. He revolutionized the whole
Indian Pharmaceutical market and
inspired others to follow the trend of
“providing quality medicine at an
economical price”.
He is one of the most distinguished
business leaders and is known for his
business acumen and entrepreneurial
spirit. His analytical mind and risk
taking attitude are reasons of his success.
His simplicity, courage, presence and
fortitude have been the sources of
inspiration for the hoi polloi as well as
for the number of budding enterprises.
He is a living legend and an epitome of
the fact that honesty and transparency is
not at variance with business acumen.
He also shared his life experiences to
motivate the new generation to come
ahead and take up new challenges and
responsibilities.
The biggest challenge for 'Mankind' was
to sustain and maintain more than 30%
annual growth rate thereby achieving
the goal of becoming the No. 1 Pharma
Company in India by 2015. Most global
Pharma companies and Indian majors
have slashed the prices of their drugs
and are hiring in big numbers to tap
small town and rural market.
From an obscure company just a decade
ago, Mankind Pharma has come a long
way. It required a wonder drug and
several new low-cost remedies for the
ultimate push that Ramesh Juneja,
founder and managing director thinks
will help Mankind become the
country's top drug maker by 2015.
There are over 20,000 drug makers in
India, making it one of the world's
most competitive markets.
The Delhi-based company targeted
the country's rural and small town
market by selling medicines at “pocket
friendly prices”. It established its
brands in less competitive and
inexpensive small town and then
caught rivals unawares in urban
market with its drugs that cost a
fraction of the brand leaders.
According to Mr. Juneja's simple logic,
two-thirds of India's population
consumes 40% of the 40,000 crore drug
market and so he started working out
thin-margin models. The company cut
prices of its products and took
competition by surprise. For instance,
its antibiotic Moxikind CV sells for Rs.
11(a six-tablets pack of 500gm) against
GSK and Ranbaxy's brands priced at
Rs. 40. Needless to say, both trade and
consumers have given this strategy
thumbs up.
'Mankind' now has over 300 brands in
its portfolio and its products are the
fourth largest prescribed medicines in
the country as per ORG-IMS,
prescription audit, 2008.
“They created market instead of
fighting with bigger rivals within a
smaller segment. It has no fancy R&D
setups like bigger companies but
m e r e l y l e v e r a g e d o n t h e
opportunities”, says a prominent
pharma man.
'Mankind' does not view its success in
terms of commercial turnover or profit
margin it gains but firmly believes that
corporate social responsibility is the
key for providing a strong and
symbolic relationship that exists
between the company and the society

project managed by K.C. Mahindra
E d u c a t i o n T r u s t a n d N a a n d i

‘Mankind’ as a part of its social
responsibility is also organizing BMD
camps on regular basis throughout
India. The motto behind organizing this
camp is to make people aware about the
Mineral deficiency in their bones as per
their weight and height. ‘Mankind’ has

Insti tute for the Blind ‘ANDH

has enrolled more than 250 blind
students from all over India with an aim
to assist the blind population with the
general pattern of the society through a
process of formal education and by
equipping them with vocational training
that will enable them to gain a reasonable
degree of economic independence.
Mankind with a philosophy of ‘Serving
Life’ is not only aiding benefits to the
society with its economical products but
also genuinely heading its responsibility
towards the future upbringing of the
country.
The story of Mankind Pharma is truly an
inspiration gelled with persistence and
perseverance. From a humble beginning
with a capital investment of about Rs. 50
lakh, Mankind was able to achieve a
turnover of over Rs. 300 crore in the year
2005. With a market share of about 1.75
percent of Rs 25,000 crore domestic
pharma markets, Mankind has a strong
presence in antibiotics, anti-fungals,
nutritionals and ED categories. They
have many brands that rank number
one.
He achieved the mission to deliver
medicines that enable patients to live
healthier, happier and more active lives.Inputs from Economic Times acknowledged

experience while preparing for IT-
BHU at Kota?
My father had a dream to see me as an
engineer. In order to fulfill the
dream of my father, I personally met
my senior who was selected in the
state level exam. I took the
information from him and started
working for IIT-JEE and finally
qualified it with my focused mind
and hard work.
Q.2 What sort of qualities one must
possess to get into IT-BHU?
A work done with proper planning can
make you win the race. Regular
Studies (7 Days in week, 30 days in a
month), daily analysis and revision
of the topics already learnt and
everyday planning for the next day
and then finally action for that
planning is a must for any exam to
be taken and get it cleared with
confidence.
Q.3 What is the distinguishing factor of
IT-BHU that makes it different
from other engineering colleges?
Campus placements at IT-BHU are
equivalent or rather better than
o t h e r I n d i a n I n s t i t u t e s o f
Technology. Faculty members at IT-
BHU are cooperative and helpful.
Q.4 Throw some light on your best
moments pertaining to studies at IIT-
BHU.
Before entering IT-BHU, I had
theoretical knowledge, but after
entering the institute, I realized
that practical knowledge is a must
to move ahead and faster in the
age of fierce competition. We were
made competent to visualize
theory in practical aspect. In my
projects namely (i) “Unmaned
Ra i lway Cross ing” & ( i i )
“Generation of Electricity from
Thermal Power”, I surveyed
many railway crosses, talked to
many railway employees. Those
days were the memorable days of
my life as I struggled hard and
improvised not only on my
concept knowledge but practical
aspects as well. Every Monday, I
reported to my project in charge
and used to give the summarized
account. Working day and night
with full enthusiasm and energy
gave me immense pleasure.
Q.5 Tell something about the campus
and the Infrastructure facility at
IT-BHU.
IT-BHU has a huge campus like that of
any other IITs. IT-BHU has the
biggest library amongst all the
IITs. At the centre of institute Birla
Temple, radiates an aura so very
inspiring and motivating.
Q.6 How different is the study pattern
at IT-BHU in comparison to that of
other engineering college.
In comparison to technical institutes, IT-
BHU has well furnished laboratories
that help in enhancing the practical
knowledge. IT-BHU's trans-
academic moment helps to keep a
track and compares the level of
knowledge of the students of IT-
BHU with those of other institutes.
Apart from regular academic tests,
surprised tests were conducted
frequently to keep the minds of the
students on track and running
always.
Q.7 What suggestions or words of
wisdom will you like to give to the
students preparing for IIT at
Resonance to increase their
productivity?
I completely believe in the study
material of Resonance. Resonance
has well researched sheets, DPPs,
Test papers for every subject and so
there is no need of any other book
except the study material of
Resonance. Questions of DPPs and
Sheets should be revised thrice in
the session so that the speed can be
increased and then maintained.
Short notes/revision planner and
the mobile numbers of the faculty
members should be kept always and
can be used as and when required.

First Step…
I walked away.
In this boiling hot May,
Leaving all my dear friends behind
Who had been so kind.
I didn't know this would be so quick,
And would leave me without friends & home sick,
In this totally new place,
Where I have many difficulties to face.
Although gentleman all around,
But still I am bound,
To the people where I belong,
And the people who accompany me in my happy song.
It's just been a week,
But drops of water began to leak,
When those moments come alive but my starts to jive,
Hoping to meet them soon,
And turn me back to earth from moon.

The Premier Coaching Institute in IndiaAfter Successfully Proving its Commitment in IIT-JEE
Sincerely Announces Yearlong Classroom Coaching For
Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) of Govt. of India has recently announced/ proposed that All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) & All India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT) shall be converted into single Common Entrance Test (CET) from the year 2011. Both the examinations are presently conducted separately by Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), New Delhi. AIEEE is conducted for admission in B.Tech./B.E. at National Institutes of Technology (NITs) & other prominent Engineering/Technology Colleges/Universities while AIPMT is conducted for admission in MBBS/ BDS courses in various Medical/ Dental Colleges across the country. There will be Common Compulsory Papers of Physics & Chemistry and Optional Paper of either Maths (For Engineering) or Biology (For Medical).
We have been in the process of equipping ourselves for the start of Yearlong Classroom Coaching for AIEEE & AIPMT for last two years. The entire study material for AIEEE & AIPMT has already been developed by our Research and Development Team. For AIEEE, we have also run a special batch of our old students during academic session 2009-10; which has produced spectacular result in AIEEE 2010. The faculty team for both AIEEE & AIPMT has been with us for last two years and is ‘fully equipped’ to train the students for these prestigious examinations .
