FOREWORD BY CAF PRESIDENT

THE LUCKY STAR

Football, particularly African football, has this characteristic of offering us an incredible show of wonder and satisfaction on a regular basis.

The same can be said for the Total CAF Confederation Cup 2018, which has overcome all predictions by offering a superb final between two clubs, Raja Club Athletic (Morocco) and AS Vita Club (DR Congo), who have a remarkable record and have displayed high technical abilities.

We should, once again, enjoy this spectacular event with the belief that we will proudly live through historical moments. We will celebrate the winner and congratulate the loser.

Regardless of the ultimate outcome of this final, we will celebrate the lucky star of African football.

CAF PresidentAhmad Ahmad

HISTORY OF THE COMPETITION

In 2004, CAF merged the African Cup Winners’ Cup and the CAF Cup into a single compe-tition, CAF Confederation Cup, based upon the European model of the UEFA Cup which was also the adopted model for creating the CAF Cup previously in 1992.

The winner of the domestic cup competition and the third placed club in the domestic leagues of top 12 Member Associations are eligible to participate in the CAF Confederation Cup, whereas Member Associations ranked outside the top 12 will be represented by only the winner of the domestic cup competition.

The initial stages of the competition; Preliminary round, 1/16th round and the 1/8th round are played according to a knock-out system with ties broken via away goals and eventually penalties. The eight teams eliminated from the 1/8th round of the CAF Champions League automatically qualify to play the qualified teams for the 1/8th round in a playoff with the winners, advancing to the mini-league stage of four teams each in each group.

Since its inception in 2004, North African sides mainly Tunisia and Morocco have been most successful with eight titles between them; Tunisia (5) and Morocco (3). CS Sfaxien of Tunisia has won the title a record three times, 2007, 2008 and 2013.
