The venue for this year’s FIM AFRICA Cross Country Championship event,

the Delamere Farm, is not only known for magnificent scenery, but of course also has a very long and rich history. There is accordingly no doubt that riders participating in the event will thoroughly enjoy the experi-ence of riding on this terrain.

It is very pleasing and encour-aging to note that notwithstand-ing the current world economic climate and the tremendous travel costs involved, that at the time of writing this message, 69 entries had already been re-ceived and besides the local Ke-nyan riders who have entered, competitors from South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia will be competing in the event.

Kenya Motor Sport Federa-tion is renowned for hosting outstanding events and there is no doubt that the organisation of this year’s event will again be of an exceptionally high stan-dard as the team of enthusias-tic and dedicated officials from KMSF responsible for this event,

have been working very hard for several months already to ensure that the event is success-ful – and enjoyed by all competi-tors. An added advantage is the fact that KMSF is also well known for the tremendous hos-pitality which is always extended to all competitors and foreign visitors.

Some very tough battles for honours in all the classes are anticipated, and spectators can therefore also look forward to seeing some outstanding riding.

On behalf of FIM AFRICA, I would like to extend a sincere vote of appreciation to KMSF for hosting the event, and for the many hours spent in the organisation of the event – and to all the competitors who have entered the event and are sup-porting our Continental Cham-pionship.

Wishing all riders an enjoy-able and trouble-free event, as well as a safe return journey to their countries.

n behalf of the Board of Directors of the Ke-nya Motor Sports Fed-eration, it gives me great pleasure to welcome

each one of you to this prestigious 2011 FIM Africa Cross Country Bike & Quad Team Championship.

I know those coming from down South and our regional neighbors will not fail to find Kenya a welcom-ing and fascinating place to visit.

Each FIM Continental event is made possible-thanks to a group of dedicated people “burning midnight oil” in various aspects of organiza-tion.

One of this group is very im-portant: the Jury President, Safety and Environment officer, Clerk of the Course, Stewards, Marshals and Medical Officers etc who carry out various tasks from the technical con-trol of motorbikes and quads to cir-cuit inspection.

As the host country we can com-fortably avow that we have “burnt the candle at both ends” and intend to give this Championship our best shot.

I must admit at this juncture that off road events in Kenya, more so the Cross Country Raid Challenge which integrates Enduros, continue to attract considerable spectator fervor, media publicity and bumper entries as witnessed in the past two years.

The success story is mainly due to the time and effort our volunteers and sponsors have contrived to sacrifice since we introduced cross-country raid challenge competitions in 2004.

Being the second time Kenya is hosting this prestigious Champion-ship since the initial one in 2004, Ke-nya Motor Sport Federation (KMSF) is proud to be associated with the rest of Africa once again.

The initial event, then known as Africa Motorcycle Union (AMU) Enduro Championship, rekindles sweet memories of names like Otto Ulyatte, Franco Checchni and the

late Dave Rose who featured very prominently for Kenya when the cream of Africa’s best came calling.

I am glad that eight years down the line, young budding Kenyan rid-ers like Shivam Vinayak and Andrew Stewart Pleasance continue to fit into their oldies’ shoes with zest and vigor.

Since 2004, quad and bike com-petitions have witnessed remarkable growth. Kenya have also played a piv-otal role in whipping up the enthu-siasm riders and organizers across the FIM Central Africa Motocross region with Tanzania coming up very well. Today, Uganda has some of the best tracks for motocross; a clear in-dication that motorcycle rivalry and development is at its heights in this region.

Only recently, former KMSF Chairman Mr. Maina Muturi was confirmed as the Fim Africa Vice President (environment), while An-thony Nielsen was reappointed to the Motocross Commission and Mbambu Muturi to off road Enduro Commission.

We sincerely thank Madam Presi-dent Mrs. Beaulah Schoeman and the entire South Africa based FIM Africa secretariat for the support that they have accorded KMSF over the years. Special thanks to organiz-ers EAMSC, hosts Soysambu Con-servancy, the Government of Kenya and relevant County Councils who have put in endless hours to catapult this admirable setup to fruition.

To the spectators, thank you for your support and enjoy what will be a great weekend of excitement and spectacular riding.

To all the visitors, feel free to sample some of our best hospital-ity zones like the world famous Ma-sai Mara as well as the picturesque countryside. May the best country win.

FIM Africa Continental Cross Country Championships - October 20114

As the host country we can comfortably avow that we have “burnt the candle at both ends” and intend to give this Championship our

best shot.

Page 5: FIM Cross Country Championship,Kenya

The formalities of the past few months are over and focus now turns to the much talked about

FIM Africa Bike and Quad Cross Country Team Championship set for Soysambu Conservancy on the weekend of October 14-15.

The enthusiasm isn’t merely about the Championship, but the fact that Kenya will be hosting the biggest off-road team event in the continent.

With the stiffest challenge antici-pated from down South, the general feeling is that Kenyans can’t be push-overs being on their home turf.

The competition will be the second to have been hosted after the 2004 edition in which the hosts fielded the likes of Otto Ulyatte, Dave Rose and Francesco Chechni and gave a good account of them-selves.

The length of the circuit is ap-proximately 48kms for motorcycles and quads. Unlike the first event Kenya hosted, this time round the Regs permit competitors a sight-ing lap the day before the start of the event. “Competitors may, if they wish go on a sighting lap, provided they have advised the Clerk of the course and\chief Marshall of their intention to do so,” said Anthony Nielsen, the Motorcycle Commis-sion Chairman of KMSF.

The ‘who is who’ in the Kenyan brigade is a blend of young budding and veteran riders who are ex-pected to inject the much needed impetus in search of glory. Organiz-ers East African Motor Sports Club are happy that the event has gotten massive boost and sponsors both in cash and in kind as the event draws near.

Bush Rovers, Denise Wali-mohamed, Taita Estates, Shazco, Wilken Group, Sports Motor-cycle, Comply, Virtualsat, Cimbria East Africa, Rob’s Magic, Kam-pala Coach, Security Group, Au-todrome Services, ALS, Kpmg, Soy

Sambu,Caroline Armstrong,Denise W a l i m o h a m m e d , F i n l a y Group,Homeboyz,Kenya Shell, Bar-clays Bank, Rongai Transporters and Chancerywright Insurance Brokers have come on board to support the event.

With enthusiasts rubbing their hands with glee expecting a scorch-ing race, many are those who can’t wait to see what’s up the sleeves of Shivam Vinayak. The glamour of it all is that family love will be put aside as Moses Mugo (KTM525) takes on his son Charles Mugo (Honda450) in an exciting family showdown.

Pundits have also adopted a wait-and-see attitude on the perfor-mance of the gritty Tom Cholmon-deley who has been riding quite aggressively over the past few years.

Shivam-rejoicing in Ganatra Cross-Country Championship vic-tory (for bikes) - has rode his Yama-ha 450 machine quite aggressively.

The list is incomplete without a mention of former cross country bikes champion Andrew Pleasance (KTM450), Jorgen Nielsen (YZ450), David Lawrence Brown (Yama-ha450), Captain Wangai (YZ450), Peter Kinyua (KTM530). The quads brigade has the likes of Cross-coun-ty champion Shazar Anwar (Bom-bardier 650), Vaiani siblings Arafat (Bombardier) and Aadil (Honda), Vincent Boulanger (Ca-am Ren-egade 800) and Zane Young (YZ Raptor 660).

Tanzania, Zambia, Uganda, South Africa will also partake the conti-nental championship.

Meanwhile, former KMSF Chair-man Maina Muturi was confirmed as the FIM Africa Vice President (en-vironment), Anthony Nielsen -Mo-tocross commission and Mbambu Muturi- off road Enduro Commis-sion.

The President of Fim Africa Mrs Beaulah Schoeman expressed Con-fidence with the Kenya delegates and their commitment to motor-cycle Sport Development.

TO NAKURU4 KMTO NAIVASHA / NAIROBI

Located on the picturesque Soysambu Conservancy, the course is about 48km long. It

starts off along two main rivers that feed Elementaita. The circuit is very technical and could be tricky should heavens open.

We then head under the main Nakuru/Nairobi highway to the side of the farm and do a 12 km section before heading back to the main farm.

The course has been designed to offer riders a fast and technical ride through the bushes and the very rocky stretches. Very little farm roads will be used and a lot of cattle/wild animal narrow tracks.

The quads will do roughly 85 per-cent of the route and only be separat-ed on two sections, as it is impossible for a quad by to pass that section.

A beautiful 4 km spectator stage has been designated along the start and finish areas whereby riders will tackle 5 times in and out of the river, technical steep hills and a few jumps to boot.

The spectator stage is situated only 600 meters from the spectator camp-ing area. This is practical as vehicles will not be allowed to drive round the farm.

Soysambu is the longest established ranch in Kenya, relying still on the good husbandry practices of our

founder, the 3rd Lord Delamere. His descen-dants still sustainably preserve that same land-scape with more of an eye to conservation and an unconventional approach to the future.

Agriculture has changed a lot in over a century but the principles of good stewardship have not. This ranch is now a leading tourist des-tination, part of a wildlife corridor between the Rift Valley lakes and now a world heritage site. In addition we are Kenya’s leading beef producer and home to 10% of the endangered Rothchild’s Giraffe.

Motorsport is part of our vision; provision of a venue for Enduros and Rallies has supported our conservation efforts for the last 20 years.

Motorsportspeople are an appreciative and engaged audience for conserving landscape and it is with great pride that we are able to support this prestigious international event for the greater glory of Kenya.

Kenya’s WildlifeF

or many, the name “Kenya” has always been synonymous with wildlife. We are the home of Africa’s famous “Big Five” (Lion,

Elephant, Rhino, Leopard and Buffalo) and it is true that this is the best place in the entire continent to see these Five magnificent species in their natural environment. But Kenya has even more to offer. We have an incredible range of wild habitats, each one with its own unique range of species. Open savannah, deep forest, soda and freshwater lakes, alpine meadows, coral reefs, caves, beaches, river deltas and even more. A safari in Kenya means more than just seeing animals. This is a chance for you to immerse yourself in a wild world where the fascinating natural behaviour and interaction between species will keep you enthralled.

TOURISM PERFORMANCE OVERVIEW 2010Kenya recorded the highest number of tourists’ arrivals ever at 1,095,945 tourists as at 31st December, 2010. This was a 15% growth compared to the 952,481 experienced in 2009. This figure excludes the cross border tourists’ arrivals which could add up to another approximately 700,000 tourists once the results are fully tallied by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics.

WILDLIFE PARKSYou can get unedited glimpses into the lives of Kenya animals at the following spots: Masai Mara is Kenya’s (and the world’s)

original “lion country.” It is famed for its surreal annual wildebeest migration and an up-close encounter with Masai Warriors.

Amboseli National Park offers unbelievable concentrations of elephants and breathtaking views of Mt. Kilimanjaro.

Tsavo National Park, administered as 2 units of Tsavo East and Tsavo West, is the largest wildlife sanctuary in the country.

While Lake Nakuru National Park is home to considerable populations of Kenya animals, it is more famous for its millions of flamingoes whose plumes turns Lake Nakuru into a sea of pink

Nairobi National Park offers an unbelievable wilderness experience in the heart of the capital of Kenya. Equally astounding is that it is home to all the ‘Big Five’ except the mighty elephant.

WILDLIFE SANCTUARIES The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust runs

an orphanage for elephants and rhinos.

Here we get nerve-tingly close to some adorable orphaned baby elephants.

When we want to see a giraffe close up, we visit the Giraffe Center to pose with and feed the world’s tallest mammals

The Nairobi Safari Walk, a family favorite, is one of the popular tourist attractions in Kenya and is great for anyone craving a quasi-wild experience

The Mamba Villages in Mombasa and Nairobi offer you an opportunity to witness Nile crocodiles jostling for meat at feeding time.

Haller Park sits on a disused cement quarry in Mombasa. It is a fascinating lesson in reclamation. Haller Park was the site of an unusual friendship between a baby hippo named Owen and a 130-year old male tortoise!

TEAM SOUTH AFRICA

8 man South African team for Kenyan Off road eventSouth Africa has assembled a 8 man squad to lead it’s charge in the upcoming FIM Africa Off-road Challenge to be held in Soy Sambu ranch almost three weeks away. Considered some of the best riders in the continent, the contingent is set to spice up the event that now promises to be one of Kenya’s more prestigious motor sports events. Led by team captain Neil Gailey, have a look at the team planning to reign supreme in Kenya.

NEIL GAILEY – YAMAHA 250 2T. – NO 65

Neil is the South African team captain, and will also be competing in the Masters class as well. He has just won the SA National championships in the Masters class in off road racing. Neil has been competing in all the SORC events in 2011, as well as National and Regional events in South Africa.

GRANT PRETORIUS – YAMAHA 250 2T- NO 67Grant has been competing throughout 2010 and 2011 in the SORC events as well as in the Desert race. Grants determination has always seen him bring his bike home under the most trying of circumstances as seen in Zimbabwe in 2009, when the rest of the team had retired due to injury or mechanical problems, Grant doggedly dragged his bike across the finish line.

DAVID KIDD – KAWASAKI 250 4T –NO 61David has had an amazing season in the SORC championships as well as in the club events. Although he has not competed in Nationals lately, David has always ridden in the Desert race with great success on his 125. Look out for this rider, he is South Africa’s dark horse.

IAN DYKES – KTM 200 2T – NO 64Traditionally an mx rider, Ian started riding in the support classes at SORC events in 2010 and also competing in the SA National off roads. 2011 has been a trying year for him and he now wants to get over the bad luck and get on with competing. He cannot wait to ride in Kenya especially as the race is on the farm that his Grandfather worked on for several years.

RUAN ROBERTS – BETA 350 4T – NO 66Ruan is no stranger to the Continental championships, having represented South Africa before when the event was held in Zambia. Ruan first started competing in SORC events in Namibia and Zambia when he was a teenager. He has also competed in Italy. 2011 has been a good season for Ruan who has been competing in the South African Nationals in the OR2 class and has taken fourth place in the South African National championships and is 7th in the overall standings.

WAYNE JORDAAN – KTM 300 EXC – NO 83Wayne is competing not only in the B2 class but also as in the Senior rider class. Unfortunately work commitments and managing a racing team in 2011 have kept him out of the saddle most of this year. However, Wayne has during 2008/2009/2010 competed in a number of SA Nationals and Regional events as well as the grueling Desert race.

CALVIN COLLINGTON – YAMAHA 250 4T – NO 62Calvin is the pioneer of the SORC series! He would travel up to Zambia to compete and his stories of how much fun it was, resulted in the rest of us following suit. In those days, Calvin rode a Yamaha quad and has represented South Africa in Zimbabwe in 2006 on the quad. Calvin is an experienced National rider, although it was always on the quad, but lately has switched his 4 wheels for 2 and it is proving to be a winning formula for him.

SAREL VAN BILJOEN – CAN AM - NO L73Sarel has competed for South Africa at the Continental championships in Zambia. This year sees Sarel take the South African National championship title in the Senior class. If it wasn’t for Sarel, the SA team would not have been able to get their bikes up to Kenya as he has offered to drive the truck with the bikes up.

Tanzanian riders assemble a 9 man squad

Tanzania has confirmed that it has a lineup of at least nine riders who will fly their flag high in October during the FIM Africa

Cross Country Challenge to be held in Kenya in mid October.

Speaking to the team captain Per Bjerre, he expressed confidence with his squad and indi-cated that they are ready for the arduous task ahead and the competition from across the continent that comes with it. “We are looking forward to some proper competition from all the great riders in Africa.”

The team has set-up a special track in Aru-sha where they have been perfecting their skills.

“We have, as a team, been practicing since the beginning of July for this up-coming event

on our special set-up Enduro track just to be ready for whatever but only time will tell if we practiced on the right things.” said Per.

Unlike most of the other participating coun-tries, Tanzania will not field any quad bike rid-ers. Their motorbike class will consist of both veteran riders and new riders whom Per has described as coming up strong.

ARAFAT VAIANINick name ‘Ari’, Age 35I bought a quad just to have fun riding around the bush and somehow ended up taking part in the xcountry rally raids - this was never the plan but I enjoyed the challenge and the event as a whole. Its not just about the adrenaline rush, but also about meeting with other enthusiasts from different backgrounds. I’ve never done an enduro event, so the FIM is going to be a great learning experience for me. If it rains heavy, I have what the racers do not - a little button that says activate 4x4!

ROB CALDERHaving enjoyed the stability on 4 legs for many years, Rob has recently converted back to 2 wheels. This is his first year back on the circuit after 17 years. The term “Ride Red” is normally associated with the proverbial red mist, in Rob’s case it represents the occasional bleeding caused by pouncing “Ngoja Kidogo” bushes commonly found in Kenya . So, if you see him on the track, first congratulate him, then get out the way………..

SEAN PELLINGAt 37 I am just shy of being classed a Senior for the event – a sobering & scary thought!! The FIM Cross Country Team Challenge therefore presents a last opportunity to give it my all before the knees and back give in and force more leisurely riding (albeit it is creeping in already). Having ridden in the enduro scene for the past 8 years this event is the culmination of a great motorsports scene that exists in Kenya and I am honoured to be part of the team – Come on Kenya!! By the way cheers to Anto and the organisingcommittee.

Kenyan riders of the FIM cross country event slated for 15th October at the extensive

Soysambu Ranch in Naivasha have received a major boost in personal body protection equipment.

Leatt Brace Corporation a leading manufacturer of neck braces from South Africa and Tekrider from Canada - a leading manufacturer of chest protectors - have come in with hefty discounts on their product range specifically for the Kenyan riders as support for the event.

“One ideally should not put a price tag on their safety but the research and development cost as well as the advanced type of materials used to produce these two particular products, considered by many to be the best products in their class, are high and

not within the reach of everyone.” said Yusuf Abdulgani Ltd, the official importers.

“There is lots more technology and statistics available today than before and a neck brace for example is regarded to be as important as a helmet, how many people do you see riding without a helmet? Tekrider products are one of the few regarded as true body protectors and not just roost deflectors. We hope this kind gesture by the two suppliers Leatt Brace and Tekrider will be taken up by Kenyan riders of all ages and riding disciplines.”they went on to say.

An appeal was also sent out to the courier companies to support this cause and reduce the cost further of the units which are scheduled to be couriered in soon.
