Introduction Dave Garratt, Film Programmer

We are thrilled to announce Square Chapel Arts Centre’s very first film festival - Up North: Film and Television Festival - celebrating northern voices on screen and behind the camera.

It became apparent, when we had our mini Barry Hines season last Summer, that there was a real thirst for film and television from the north, from South Yorkshire, all the way up to the Scottish Borders. We are blessed locally with a strong history of film culture that has always expressed our identity and landscape (rural and industrial) on the small and big screen. From the kitchen sink dramas of the 1950s and 60s such as Billy Liar and A Taste of Honey to recent releases that crossed the pond like Billy Elliot and Calendar Girls. It’s a huge body of work to call upon and it’s been a tough decision to whittle it down, even though we have over 50 events as part of the festival!

We have a huge range of well-known names and faces coming along as part of this festival, to share stories of their careers. Guests include

Brian Blessed, Kay Mellor, Alan McGee, Henry Normal and Paul Chuckle who will take to the Square Chapel stage alongside critically acclaimed new talent such as Harry Wootliff (director of Only You, previewed at the festival) and Aaron Dunleavy, who evokes the spirit of those 1950s and 60s realist films in his work.

Finally, when programming Up North Film and Television Festival, our main aim was to make it entertaining and reflect the other genres of entertainment we host here at Square Chapel on a daily basis. You can expect great music from The Orielles, side splitting laughs from comedian John Shuttleworth, a theatrical exploration of all 295 episodes of Last of the Summer Wine and even a Frank Sidebottom Papier-mâché head-making workshop!

Whether it be a writer, director, actor or landscape you take away with you from this film and television festival, I hope you come away with a new-found appreciation and pride of what us folk from ‘Up North’ make and send out into the world when it comes to film and television.

Café/Bar We serve a large selection of cask ales and craft beers from breweries home and abroad, along with a great selection of ciders, wines and premium spirits. All this complements the locally sourced and seasonal dishes that are served in our wonderful café & bar.

Halifax Culture Hub Square Chapel is part of the Halifax Culture Hub. It’s a joint initiative with The Piece Hall Trust and exists to promote the wonderful cultural and heritage things happening in our little corner of Yorkshire.
