I t 's im por tant that everyone is on the sam e page when discussing di ff icul t topics. I f you have a sm al ler group, brainstorm som e ground ru les together that everyone agrees on so the space feels as safe as possible for everyone. Som e exam ples include:

KEEP TRACK OF TIMEOffer per iodic t im e checks when needed. Prevent r am bl ings and tangents by helping to keep the group conversat ion on topic and relevant.

REMEMBER THE FACILITATOR'S ROLE Your r ole is to faci l i tate the conversat ion - not to dom inate the space. M ake sure you work as a guide to m ove the conversat ion forward and to set the tone for a r espectfu l , inclusive, and tr ansform ative space.

- Pract ice act ive l isten ing.- Do not in ter rupt others (one person speaks at a t im e).- Use "I" statem ents (speak fr om your own exper ience).- Be present. Turn off m obi le phones and other distr act ions.- Par t icipate i f you haven 't al r eady & give others space to share i f you've spoken a few

t im es.- Acknowledge the di fference between in tent and im pact. The in tent and the im pact of

our words and/or act ions are two separate th ings, and everyone should take responsibi l i ty for their im pact on others, r egardless of good in tent ions.

I t 's also great pract ice to have everyone in tr oduce them selves and share their prefer red pronouns before sett ing expectat ions. You can also provide nam e tags and instruct people to wr i te their prefer red pronouns below their nam es.
