The phone ringing is the first thing we hear and see (besides the screaming at the start, instantly hinting horror). The fact that the camera has zoomed in on it creates emphasis for who is calling. It also creates an element of mystery.

Drew Barrymore is a very famous actress, which makes us think that she’ll be the main character. The bunch of knives that she fiddles with on the phone foreshadows later that she may need them. At the start of this opening she seems pretty chilled, contrasting with the horror theme, which might show that later she won’t be as happy.

This shot that pans around the back of her garden shows that no one is there, yet it is very misty and dark, which could mean that someone might be lurking there and we can’t actually see them.

This shot of the pool was shown before with no one there, and now her boyfriend has been tied up and stabbed, which brings in the murderer. The red shows how gory the film is, and this is just the very beginning of the film so there are probably mainy more deaths to come.

The camera suddenly shows this murder, making the audience jump from how close he is and how sudden the change in pace is. The mask hides the true persons identity, and the black cloak acts like what the grim-reeper wears, and so he is representing death.

The camera has a wide shot, showing the mistiness in the background, and the killer chasing the girl. It is obvious that he is going to catch her, and by chasing her with a knife already shows that there will be a similar death to her boyfriends.
